I was attracted to the course that crosses the river in the canyon and decided to participate. In the same group, there were American, Indian, Chinese, and two Japanese couples, all in their 20s to 30s.
From the meeting point, we took a car down a steep mountain road while overlooking the canyon, which was thrilling due to the narrowness of the road.
After signing the waiver at the horse area, we chose helmets (none of which were very clean, so it was better to choose quickly), and there was a 5 to 10-minute explanation about horseback riding. (Since my English skills are limited, I desperately gathered information from my husband. I was a bit worried if I couldn't get someone to interpret for me.)
We put the water we brought (which must be purchased at the meeting point as it is not sold at the stable) into a bag they provided (a pocket-like thing to hang on the horse's shoulder). Once you get on the horse, beginners won't have much leeway, so if you want to use a camera, it's recommended to hang it around your neck. By the way, make sure to use the restroom at the meeting point, as there won't be another opportunity until we return.
The horse I rode was a model student and always stayed close to the guide, so I could hear the guide's instructions. (However, it was very tough for me not to be able to respond to the guide due to my lack of English skills, haha.) The other horses were also generally well-trained and calm, so there shouldn't be any issues for those not used to horseback riding, but each horse has its own personality, such as those that stop to graze, those that want to go ahead, and those that try to take a different route, which adds to the fun of the tour.
We walked slowly along the mountain path, enjoying the plants and scenery for about two hours. The breeze was pleasant, making it a refreshing tour.

You will need a means of transportation, such as a rental car, to reach the tour meeting point. Since it was an English tour, I could hardly understand what the female instructor and guide was saying.
However, we enjoyed the descent to the bottom of Waipi'o Valley in a 4WD with a 25-degree slope (it's quite difficult to reach the bottom of Waipi'o unless you're in good shape). After selecting a horse and receiving a very simple explanation (which I didn't understand much of in English), we began our horseback riding.
We crossed a river that was knee-deep and enjoyed riding on paths that cars couldn't access. The horses are well-trained, so even as first-time riders, they walked on their own. Occasionally, they would playfully interact with other horses, which made them excited, but pulling on the reins calmed them down.
It was a satisfying tour with the deep nature of Waipi'o and the valuable horseback riding experience. I believe it would have been even more satisfying if participants were paired with friendly horses. During the ride, our horses were quite far apart, making it difficult for us to converse.

A van takes you down to the valley floor where you are introduced to your horses. The ride takes you thru beautiful vegetation (mangos, avacados, bananas, taro and amazing flowers). You cross thru streams and see waterfalls streaming down into the valley. The riding itself is not very exciting. The horses walk at a leisurely pace. However the views are so worth it!

When I made the reservation, there were no reviews, so I was torn between the tour to Waipi'o Valley, but I wanted to cross the river, so I chose this company and participated with some anxiety. However, it exceeded my expectations in a good way, and I had a really enjoyable time. I could tell that the guide was trying to entertain us, and everyone, including quite a few Japanese participants, got excited together. We crossed multiple rivers and even encountered wild horses. I'm not sure if the guide was the only one, but I was able to understand more Japanese than I expected, and the explanation on how to ride the horses was clear. I had heard that there are many mosquitoes in Waipi'o, so I took a lot of precautions, but I didn't hear any mosquito sounds. The horses were beautiful, and even my somewhat fastidious self was fine with them. It was truly great. For those who are hesitant, I highly recommend it!

I signed up for horseback riding in Waipi'o Valley. I was supposed to meet there, but I overslept and ended up being about 20 minutes late. When I called in broken English, they kindly said they would wait for me, which was a huge help. We rode down to the base of the valley in a van with the door wide open, and then it was time to start riding! The horse was very smart and walked perfectly well even for beginners. Along the way, the staff took a lot of photos for us. There was a spot where we had to cross a river, and it was so deep that I had to lift my legs while riding, which was thrilling. The next day, my butt was a little sore, but I had so much fun and it was a valuable experience. If I get the chance to go to the Big Island again, I would love to participate again.

While the shear beauty of the valley is worth the trip out to Waipio, our guide made the day a special one. He was funny, knowledgeable and a pretty good photographer. We brought home some great memories and the pictures to keep them fresh. The ride was pretty tame, which was fine for us. The horses were gentle and the pace was leisurely and relaxing.

After reading about how wonderful the Waipio Valley Ride was, I was excited to go. I have shown horses for over 20 years and know my way around a horse. When we arrived at the stables, and, yes, the road into the valley was an experience to be had, I was very disappointed in the quality of the horses. I over heard one worker state that most of the horses were lame.
The ride itself was peaceful and the scenery was beautiful. The guide took us on public roads and down a short stream; the actual ride was about 1 1/2 hours long. My horse was pleasant to ride and knew his job.
The guides were okay but spent a great deal of time talking with locals or riding off on their own. Several times very inexperienced riders were left by themselves and seemed very uncomfortable; I would not be surprised if their experience was not a good one. I am glad nothing bad happened but it easily could have.
I would do this activity again but probably with another operator.

Their friendlyness and helpfullness really made the ride from great to an amazing experience. It was fun to ride through water and learn about the valley. I would recommend it to anyone interested in horseback riding. The horses were easy to ride but also had some personality which is always fun and the guides did a good job of teaching the basics and what to do to stay safe.

It was fun and the staff was great! I rate an overall 5 star but I think the horse back route could be a little more interesting if we had gone in a circle instead of taking the left route then turn back the same way and then take the right route and then turn back to get back and that would complete the journey. But don't get me wrong, the ride was exciting and very entertaining!

The horseback ride through the Waipio Valley was definitely very scenic. It's a beautiful area. My horse was a little temperamental, preferring to stop and chew on plants by the wayside every few feet. The guides were good with the horses but didn't provide much background or cultural information about the valley and its people. Overall, it's a great way to explore this beautiful, unique valley.

We thoroughly enjoyed this activity. The ride down and up from the Valley was challenging but we had an experienced driver who navigated the road expertly. Both of our guides grew up in Waipio Valley so they were well prepared to introduce us to its history and special characteristics. With a few simple instructions we were able to ride the horses along the valley trails and felt like we actually learned a bit about riding horses. The valley was beautiful and the ride was quite enjoyable. We throughly recommend this adventure.
