Maui
My wife, myself and my sister with her husband were able to get this trip. We were told that normally they like to do this trip with 6 people. We had only four in our group but they still ran the trip. We took the early morning van ride to Hana and the helicopter ride back. You can do this trip either way. We had a brand new GMC custom van, it was great. Greg our driver said that this company only has newer vans. The only thing better than a new van was a very experienced driver. Greg was great, he knew all the places to slow down and where you could get the best pictures. My wife and sister are very much into flowers, Greg was very knowledgeable on the subject. Many years ago I drove this road and I missed so much, having a driver/guide is the best way to to this. I have a commercial driving licence so I can recognize and appreciate a professional driver. Lunch was very good and light, you want that for the helicopter flight back. The pilot, Glenda was very smooth and safety was always a big concern. The helicopter company was Blue Hawaiian, top notch outfit. I could not think of one negative comment or even a constructive criticism. Is it cheap no, is it value for your money yes.
Our driver was not only hilarious, but very knowledgeable. It was a great group on our bus, and was a blast. Good day spent, with some amazing photo opportunities.
I searched for a Japanese tour, but it was already too late and everything was sold out! I reluctantly chose the English tour, but there was only one American couple besides me. The driver and guide was considerate and let me sit in the front seat. I had no time to relax as I was immersed in English. Since I am Japanese, I was really impressed by the slow and easy-to-understand English guide. He was an American who had moved from California 25 years ago. His English was clear. The couple was kind, and I didn't feel lonely at all. The scenery on the way to Hana through the rainforest was amazing. The guide let me taste bananas ripened on trees that can only be found there, and we stopped at a stall where I could enjoy pure coconut ice cream. In the end, instead of dropping me off at my hotel first (Kahului), he went out of his way to take me to Wailea, where the American couple was staying, to show me the sunset in Kihei, and then he even took me back to Kahului! It was a fantastic day with great people and a wonderful tour. It might have been a coincidence, but it was truly great. For someone familiar with the area, it might be a bit surprising. Thank you! ❤️
It's taken me several trips to Maui to make it to Hana. Why? The idea of spending all day driving my car on a dangerous road with 54 one-lane bridges and 600+ turns (meaning I couldn't even enjoy the scenery) just didn't appeal. But then someone recommended this tour...Instead of driving yourself on this treacherous road (and trust me, with all the amateurs out there it is treacherous), you ride in a comfortable passenger van with an incredibly knowledgeable and enjoyable guide. Instead of driving 3 hours to Hana and 3 hours back along the same route, you take a helicopter for one of the legs and see breathtaking aerial views of this gorgeous island. The tour is well planned, the meals yummy (even the vegetarian and gluten free options were fantastic), and the people were top notch. My only complaint was waiting almost an hour after check in at the heliport to get going. Otherwise, it was a perfect activity.
The area is so beautiful it would be hard to mess up! Lots of stops at lovely places.
Our tour guide Travis totally made this day and excursion memorable. It was a long day but was filled with history, phenomenal sites and entertainment provided by our guide. One of the best excursions on the island by far!
We had a wonderful time on our Taste of Hana Tour with Hailey! She was a very safe expert driver with lots of fun information to give. We saw some amazing things and my family couldn't have done it without her. We really had an awesome time!! Thank you, Hailey, for your courtesy and knowledge!
Thank you so much for your review! We really appreciate you taking the time & making the effort to share your experience with others. We love Haley too! She is a great guide... filled with knowledge, humor, patience and a sense of adventure! Wishing you all the best.... The Holo Holo Gang
Best way to do the road to Hana.
Steve is a great driver/guide.
Pickup time came and went. We had to call to remind that we had made a booking. And the pickup only came at 750 am which was 50 minutes after pickup time.
Aloha,
Thank you very much for taking the time to post about your experience. We apologize for the pick-up being delayed and we have shared your feedback with the activity provider to better so they can better serve future guests.

We loved our combo (Helicopter/Van) tour of Hana. It is the best way to do it. It is a rather long but beautiful drive to/from Hana so taking a helicopter one way and seeing the sights including Haleakala is best of both worlds. Our guide Scott Ferguson (Scotty) was terrific. He was fun, informative and engaging. The Hana area is so beautiful. Hint: if you plan to swim I suggest you bring reef shoes. This was one of the highlights of our trip. Highly recommended!
Great way to see Hana. Lots of fun. Very beautiful. Our guide Scotty was fantastic. Highly recommend.
Our tour guide Isaiah was awesome and very friendly. He knew a lot about the island.
This is my first visit to a rainforest and I was amazed.
We were picked up at designated location at 930 AM. We then changed to rubber shoes at the office and proceeded to hike. We were given breakfast and started the trail. Looks like it rained heavily the previous day and so we had to cross few streams on our way. The current in the streams were below our knee level but very strong. It was scary. The guide was very friendly, funny, knowledgeable and professional. So we did not have any difficulty. But it was awesome to see the falls full of water and strong currents in the streams. While we were told about occurrence of flash floods, I wonder what life would be in these situations. It was really wild out there, but you are with a professional.
I particularly enjoyed sliding in the water through a tunnel (the guide was there at the other end of the tunnel to stop me from being carried away by the current). My son (29) jumped 20 feet into one of the water fall, the guide showed us twice how to do that. We visited several water falls and I managed to stand under one of those 10 feet tall falls. The guide showed us several varieties of flowers, plants and fruits. We tasted some fruits, and had a good lunch break in one of the falls. The hike was not very difficult but also was not very easy. We returned to our car by 2 30 PM.
Many of the falls are not accessible to public and visiting with a professional is the best way to do it. I strongly recommend the hike to anyone.
We had a great time - our tour guide "Hailey" was awesome. She showed us the inside of Hana jungle - the best waterfalls and some history of the trees and beaches. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We had a great time too... Sharing the best places along the Road to Hana is our favorite thing to do! Biggest hugs... the Holo Holo Gang
There are so many stops along the way and some you don't stay at very long. So go on your own with a rental car so you can see what you want to see. The tour guide was pretty awful and so were the other passengers.
We took a group of seven people on this tour and some of our group had done this trip previously. The driver had a tough time managing the people on the tour and other guests were up to 30 minutes late getting back to the bus on several occasions. The lunch situation was not good either. We waited in line for 30 minutes out doors in the heat at the one little stand available for lunch. Then sat out doors to eat with no AC and were dripping. On previous tours there were much better lunch set ups. We were never given enough time to get into the water at the black sands or the seven pools. Mostly because other people were late and the driver didn't manage the group well. But what really took the cake was our departure. My 71 year old father and his new wife were leaving and the driver asked if he could "kiss" the bride. She thought he was going to give her a peck on the cheek, but instead gave her a full on mouth kiss. So inappropriate. Too bad we had already tipped him. Not my favorite day on Maui.
My husband, myself and our 11 year old nephew had a great time on our hike. Pretty much everything was as described. We got to go to 4 different waterfalls, got to jump into 3 of them, included a pretty hefty peanut butter and jelly sandwich with a bag of chips, native fruit, lots of water and bug spray provided, and a backpack to keep everything in! The hike was definitely more on the moderate side than the easy side, I would say. My husband and I are fairly athletic and we were both sore and tired at the end of the hike. The nature is amazing. I took about 200 photos. The information that Sarah shared with us was interesting and insightful. She was a very nice, patient and informative tour guide. She was friendly and made conversation, but was not in your face, or invasive when people didn't want her to be. She was also very helpful because she showed the people on the tour the correct places and ways to jump off the waterfalls. I think this helped with some of the anxiety people had. I definitely recommend this hike. It is a little pricey, but it was worth it, and you really get your money's worth. I ended up messing up one of my ears when I jumped off of the third waterfall we found, so the end of the hike wasn't as pleasant for me as the beginning was, but I think that was a random thing that happened. My 11 year old nephew jumped a total of 7 times off the different waterfalls and never really complained about anything except that he slapped his hands and arms on the water (which was more his own fault). The one thing I didn't like was the number of people that were at the waterfalls during our tour. That was something we couldn't really control. There are some "private" waterfalls that we got to see, which, obviously had less people, but still had other people there. I think if you have a choice, go on a weekday, and it might be helpful to go during an off season. We went the day after 4th of July, so it was probably pretty busy.
The helicopter ride was fantastic, the Hana road trip was rushed, not really any swimming time and stuck with a family that had a kid throwing up all the time. Very unpleasant. Driver Gary was not the most amiable person.
The trip was well worth the money. Would definitely recommend it to anyone.
Only helicopter helps you to enjoy the landscape of valcano and the coastline! the instant conversation with pilot is a remarkable experience!
This was a very nice trip to take if you've never driven the road to Hana. There are some 600 turns and 57 one lane bridges, which seemed crazy in a rental car. Downside being If you want to stay and explore - you can't. Beyond that our tour guide, Bill, was very knowledgeable and told us lots of interesting facts. In addition to the Lava Tube Cave (which was very cool!) we also saw the black sand beach and a few waterfalls. Also the swim is cold but refreshing! They feed you so besides snacks you really don't need anymore than what they list when you register. If you get car sick, makes sure to bring something for that!
It is certainly a beautiful place, but not to the extent of being the best. Usually, I don't have much trouble with English, but I could hardly understand the English of this guide. Also, while we were in the car, he kept talking endlessly like Ichiro Furudate, but I would have appreciated a little bit of quiet time as well.
After a considerable delay getting cruise ship clearance from US customs and all passengers being able to leave ship to connect with relevant Shore tours - finally able to catch up with Gus our tour driver. VELTRA and Gus so understanding re the delays and adjusted our Tour accordingly to maximise our time on island. Really appreciated. In the end we had a great day and got to see most of Road to Hanna. Got to appreciate true beauty of the countryside with good and relevant commentary and time spent at relevant places of interest. Banana bread was good too!!
Hi Wolfgang! What a great surprise! Thank you for the awesome review! We too appreciate your flexibility and understanding. Immigration and customs almost never happens in Maui. We both were caught blindsided, but it ended up being a wonderful day! We wish you both many more moments of joy, love & laughter together... warmest aloha, the Holo Holo Gang!
Larry the tour guide talked way to much. He pointed out every leaf and flower we passed by and then when he started talking about his personal life half way through the tour i really just wanted to get off somewhere. It would have been nice to be able to talk to my husband about the things we seen and point out to each other but Larry was talking so loud we couldn't even here each other. And it wasn't just us that didn't like not being able to talk to each other most other couples sitting near us thought the same. But some of the information we hears about was interesting but most was just nonsense . And also would have been nice to know that we couldn't go swimming. We and alot of other couples wore their swim suits under our clothes and if we would have known that we weren't going swimming we would have wore more comfortable clothing for that long ride. Next time instead of a tour we will take the road to haha on our own in a rental car.
We had a great experience! The waterfalls at the original hike were not flowing due to not enough rain so our guide took us to some alternate falls and they were amazing! The road to Hana was breath taking!!
This hike takes you through the rainforest side of Maui. Our guide, Sarah, was very knowledgeable. She was able to answer our questions about the plants and animals along our hike. The waterfalls were beautiful. The jumps into the pools were a lot of fun and the guides gave good instruction on jumping which made me feel confident. The food was substantial for the duration of the hike. We were provided bananas and pineapple, both which were delicious. I had the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, which was hearty for a PB&J. My husband had the turkey sandwich, and the slice of turkey was surprisingly thick making for a filling meal. Take advantage of the bug spray they provide. My husband didn't get bit, while I, not being as diligent with coverage, got a few bites. This was the last activity we decided to add to our itinerary and it turned out to be our favorite tour of our vacation.
Our guide Kate was very knowledgeable. Had a wonderful time. The hike was well paced for our family, ages 5-70.
Awesome adventure, Larry was great! He knew so much about the area and the people that live there. Larry answered our questions as best as he could. He told us funny stories, history and folk lore about the plants and land formations as we came upon them. He was entertaining and we felt safe and comfortable with him at the wheel. We had quite a few times where we could get out and take pictures or explore the area at our many stops during the day. Our lunch was delicious. It was a great opportunity to get to know our fellow travelers while taking in the scenery.
If you want to sit back and relax and hear about the history of the island, then definitely book this tour! You get to experience the back side of the island, the hike is definitely worth the 1000ft climb, but it's not for beginners! It is muddy and there is rocks everywhere, so you definitely want good shoes and be able to hike uphill/steps for about 2 hours! The climb down only took about as hour but we didn't stop for any breaks! Tony was an awesome guide and if you are looking for a tour with waterfalls and history, do not hesitate to book this! Well worth the money!
Bruce was our driver.. he was very informative and we enjoyed our day greatly !!
