I had a great time. The staff was very accommodating, and I was able to participate comfortably. The sunset and stargazing experience is definitely recommended! It's something you can't experience in Japan, and it's truly moving, so I hope many people get to see it. They also lent us down jackets and gloves, and provided warm drinks. I'm really glad I was able to experience this on my last night in Maui.

Mendes staff, Rocky, Butch, and Frenchi were wonderful--so friendly and helpful! These folks made the experience even more fun and enjoyable. The views during the ride are spectacular. Plus, the guides provide interesting information at the two photo opportunity stops; the information and the photo ops are quite thoughtful. I've been on three other horserides on different islands, and this one is my favorite because of Rocky, Butch, and Frenchi, and the views. The BBQ lunch is also very tasty and much enjoyed after a beautiful ride.

This time, I participated with my 80-year-old mother. Six years ago, I was moved by a tour of Mauna Kea on the Big Island, so I wanted to experience that feeling again and joined the Haleakalā tour on Maui, and I was even more moved than last time. They provided chairs for us to look up at the night sky, and my mother was captivated by the countless stars without worrying about her feet. I participated in the Maui Syndrome infection patient tour on August 19. This was my 12th visit to Maui in 24 years of marriage. Among the 12 visits, I think this tour was the best one for climbing Haleakalā.

Regarding the content, I was very satisfied, just as "Luna" described in her post from June 3.

On the day of the tour, there were many clouds due to a typhoon passing nearby, so we couldn't see a sky full of stars, but I definitely want to participate in this tour again next time. It must be the charm of our guide, Mr. Yamauchi!

If you go to Maui, participating in this activity is essential for a complete trip. It starts with Krispy Kreme, and you can buy delicious jams and tea at Kula Lodge, and then finally head to Haleakalā. You drive up the 3,000-meter mountain, so there’s absolutely no stress. When you reach the summit, a breathtaking view awaits you. The colors are incredible. At the end, there’s also a heartwarming story from the guide, Mr. Yamauchi. As a side note, it gets quite cold at the top, so especially for women, it’s best to dress warmly to protect against the cold.

クリスピー＆ドーナツに始まり、クラロッジで旨いジャムや紅茶を買う事が出来、いよいよハレアカラへ。
3000メートルの山の登るのですが、車ですぅーと行くので、まったくストレスがありません。
山頂まで着くと、息を飲む光景が待っています。
色が凄いんです。
最後はガイドの山内さんの心温まるお話も付いています。
余談ですが、頂上は相当寒いので得に女性は足などしっかり防寒していったほうがいいです。

I joined this tour based on my suggestion that horseback riding would be a great way to connect with nature, something we don't usually get to do.

My child just turned eight, which is the perfect age for horseback riding, so I hoped it would be a good experience as we headed to the ranch. It was my daughter's first time seeing a real horse, and she was quite excited. The horseback riding was relaxed and felt like a leisurely stroll, making it perfect for her, and it was really wonderful.

I'm truly glad we could have this kind of interaction with nature and animals during our trip to Maui.

I previously participated in the Haleakalā volcano sunrise and downhill tour twice, but this time I joined the sunset and stargazing tour with my family, as my younger child is still small. To be honest, I didn't have high expectations. (I'm sorry!) I never imagined it would become one of the top three memories of my life.

First of all, it was my first time on a tour with a Japanese guide, and Mr. Yamauchi's explanations were very easy to understand. I learned so much more and grew to love Maui even more, realizing how deep it is. The bento box was warm and truly delicious.

The sunset was, of course, moving, but the emotion I felt when I looked up at the starry sky... I was reminded that the Earth is surrounded by so many stars, and I realized for the first time how beautiful the universe is. It was a feeling that could only be experienced by seeing it with my own eyes, not through a planetarium or an encyclopedia. Tears just flowed without reason, and I couldn't stop crying even in the car on the way back.

This is a feeling that you can only experience by seeing it with your own eyes!!

私は以前２度ハレアカラ火山のサンライズ＆ダウンヒルのツアーに参加したことがあるのですが、今回は家族連れで、下の子がまだ小さかったため、このサンセット＆星空観測ツアーに参加しました。正直期待はしてませんでした。（スミマセン！）それがこんな人生で３本の指に入るような思い出になるとは思いもしませんでした。

まず、日本人の添乗員が付いたツアーも初めてだったのですが、山内さんの説明はとてもわかりやすく、より多くのことがわかり、マウイって奥が深いなぁ~とますます好きになりました。幕の内弁当もあったかくてほんとに美味しかったです。

サンセットももちろん感動でしたが、星空を見上げたときのあの感動・・・。地球はこんなにも多くの星に囲まれていることを思い知らされ、宇宙とはこんなにも美しいものだと初めて知りました。それはプラネタリウムでも、事典でもない肉眼で見ているからこその感動でした。訳もなくただただ涙が溢れてきて、帰りの車の中でも涙が止まりませんでした。

これは実際に自分の目で見なければ味わうことの出来ない感動です！！

３０００ｍを超えているのに、ガードレールも街灯もない道を山内さんは、すいすいと運転していきます。国立公園なので、景観重視との事。さすがアメリカ。転落するのは、運転手が悪いそうです。
下界から見ると雲がかかっているので、心配していましたが、雨雲を抜け雲海の上に出ると、そこは別世界。
夕日も綺麗でした。
少々雲があったので、満天の星空とはなりませんでしたが、久しぶりに天の川を見ることが出来ました。また、初めて南十字星も見ることが出来ました。人工衛星も横切りました。
こんなすばらしいツアーをもっと前に知っていたら、一昨年亡くなった妻と一緒に参加したのに残念です。でも、今回参加した姉はとても喜んでくれました。
帰りは、肝試しの話や、吉田卓郎やユーミンなどの懐メロなども聞け、あっという間に時間が過ぎました。有難うございました。

We are in our golden years, but we went to Maui for our honeymoon. It was my first time in 13 years, and for my husband, it was his first visit to Maui.

We debated whether to go for sunrise or sunset, but since we wanted to see the starry sky slowly from a mountain over 3,000 meters high, we chose sunset.

At 2:30 PM, we were picked up in front of our hotel (Ka'anapali). As we passed through the town of Lahaina, we were given recommendations for restaurants and galleries. After a tea time at Krispy Kreme, we headed to the town of Makawao. We strolled through unique galleries featuring paintings and glass creations, as well as shops selling cowboy products. We stopped by Kula Lodge and bought a lot of souvenirs like jam and coconut candy. There was a wide variety of jams, and we got to taste several of them. They also had tea and herbal products, creating a lovely, soothing atmosphere.

As we passed through a eucalyptus-scented forest, the scenery changed with the increasing altitude. While listening to stories about the flora and fauna of Haleakalā and the spirits, we arrived near the summit just before evening. We enjoyed a 360-degree view from the height of 3,055 meters until sunset. Through the telescope, we could see the Subaru Telescope on the Big Island's Kīlauea. The sunset sinking into the sea of clouds was majestic, and the changes in the sky after sunset were beautiful as well. We were even able to see the Earth's shadow reflected in the sky.

After a restroom break and enjoying a warm Japanese bento, the stargazing began. Looking up at the night sky, it was filled with stars that twinkled quietly rather than sparkling. It made me realize just how many stars surround the Earth. I felt that this night sky was a special encounter made possible by being at such a high altitude. While watching the celestial planetarium, Yamauchi-san's explanations about stars and constellations were easy to understand, and I felt the mysteries of the universe.

It was probably lucky that it was just the two of us participating before Golden Week, but there were additional joys beyond Haleakalā, and Yamauchi-san's stories touched my heart. I didn't feel much cold thanks to my outfit of tights under my jeans and a hot pack around my waist.

熟年ですが・・新婚旅行をかねて、マウイ島に行きました。私は13年ぶり、夫は初マウイ。
サンライズか、サンセットかで迷いましたが、三千メートル級の山で、星空もゆっくりと観たかったので、サンセットにしました。

14時半に、ホテル前（カアナパリ）にお迎え。
ラハイナの街を通りながら、お勧めのレストランやギャラリーを教えていただきました。
クリスピードーナツのお店でティータイム後、マカワオの街へ。絵画やガラス創作の個性的ギャラリー、カウボーイ製品の店など散策しました。
クラロッジに立ち寄り、お土産のジャムやココナッツキャンディーをたくさん買いました。ジャムの種類は豊富で、いろいろ味見させていただき、紅茶やハーブ製品もあり・・癒される雰囲気が素敵でした。
ユーカリの爽やかな香りがする林を通り抜けて、高度が増すごとに、周囲の風景も変わってきます。ハレアカラの動植物や聖霊の話を聞きながら、夕刻前には頂上付近に到着しました。
サンセットまで、ハレアカラ高度３０５５ｍからの風景を３６０度眺めました。
望遠鏡からは、ハワイ島キラウエアのスバル展望台も。雲海に沈む夕陽は荘厳で、サンセット後の空雲の変化も美しいものでした。空に映る地球の影（アースシャドウ）も見ることができました。
トイレ休憩、温かい日本食弁当を食べた後、スターゲイジングの始まりです。
見上げた夜空は、キラキラ星というよりも、静かに瞬いている夜空いっぱいの星々でした。
地球の周りには、こんなにもいっぱいの星があるのですね。３千メートル級の高度だかこそ出遭えた夜空だと感じました。天体プラネタリウムを観ながらの、山内さんの星や星座のお話はわかりやすく、宇宙の神秘を感じました。

ゴールデンウィーク前で、夫婦二人の参加というのもラッキーだったのでしょうが・・ハレアカラ＋αの楽しみがあり、山内さんのお話も心に染みました。
ジーンズ下にタイツ・腰にホッカイロの装備で、寒さはあまり感じませんでした。

This was my eighth trip to Hawaii, and I've been to Maui seven times. I love Maui, and I’m currently a 53-year-old lady. Since my third trip, I've enjoyed horseback riding. This time, I visited Mendes Ranch for the first time, and I think it was the best ranch I've been to so far. The difference from other ranches is, without a doubt, the amazing views. It's a shame I can't show you photos because I'm not good with computers. You don't need to worry at all if you can't speak English. The staff at the ranch are very kind and teach us how to ride in a way that we can understand, even without English. The food was also very delicious; we had barbecue beef and chicken. I had never seen Mendes Ranch mentioned in Japanese guidebooks, but it was far more wonderful than the other ranches listed in guidebooks. Since there was no shuttle service, we used a rental car to get there. I found the location a bit tricky to navigate, but if you allow enough time, I think it won't be a problem. The horses are well-trained, so there are no safety issues, and even complete beginners will be fine. You can see all the beautiful sea, mountains, and valleys of Maui. I highly recommend this activity. My husband and I participated together, and on another day, my newlywed daughter and her husband joined, and they were thrilled, saying it was a wonderful honeymoon.

8度目のハワイ旅行。その内の7回はマウイです。マウイ大好きの私、現在、53歳のオバチャンです。3度目の旅行から、乗馬を楽しんできました。今回参加したメンデス牧場は初めて訪れたのですが、今まで参加した牧場の中で、一番素晴らしいと思いました。他の牧場との相違は、なんと言っても、眺めの素晴らしさです。パソコンが苦手で写真をお見せできないのが残念です。英語が話せなくても、全く心配はいりません。牧場の人も大変親切で、英語のできない私たちにもわかるように、乗り方を教えてくださいます。また、食事も、とっても美味しく、ビーフとチキンのバーベキューでした。日本のガイドブックでは掲載されてるのを見たことのなかったメンデス牧場ですが、ガイドブックに掲載されている他の牧場とは、比較にならないくらい素晴らしかったです。送迎がないので、レンタカーを利用して行きました。少し地理的に分かりにくく感じたのですが、時間的に余裕をもって行けば、問題ないと思います。また、馬がよく調教されていますので、安全面でも問題ないし、全くの初心者であっても大丈夫です。マウイの美しい海、山、渓谷すべて見ることができます。是非、お薦めしたいアクティビティです。私は夫と二人で参加、別の日に新婚の娘夫婦が参加したのですが、娘たちは、素晴らしいハネムーンになったと喜んでいました。

It was a wonderful place filled with greenery! Since there are many steep slopes, the horseback riding tour is not only less burdensome but also incredibly fun!

At one point, I closed my eyes and imagined the everyday scenes of Japan, and when I opened my eyes again, the view was nothing short of breathtaking!

At various points, the horses stopped properly, allowing us to enjoy the scenery. I had a hard time finding horseback riding activities on Maui, but I'm glad I participated!

Experiencing the natural scenery through horseback riding is highly recommended! ☆

On the day of the tour, my daughter was so happy with the very kind Mr. Yamauchi! During the drive, when Mr. Yamauchi mentioned, "Sometimes you can see whales around here," my daughter kept asking, "Whales? Whales?" Then Mr. Yamauchi stopped at a spot where we might see whales and helped us look through the binoculars! I was truly moved by Mr. Yamauchi's thoughtfulness!!!

With that kind of experience, we were able to enjoy the wonderful sunset and starry sky at Haleakalā while feeling Mr. Yamauchi's interesting talk and kindness from start to finish. Our first trip to Maui became a very special memory! Thank you so much!

I joined this tour by myself alone, but the tour was totally enjoyable. Our guide was very informative. He pointed out the place which has historically important, or Hawaiian plants, which has so many unique shapes and way to use.
He made whole day. And the view from the Lookout point was WOW!
I will recommend this tour for Anyone.

Although we couldn't see the sunset and starry sky at the summit due to the rain, the commemorative photo at the 3,000-meter peak will remain a cherished memory. My 85-year-old father and 79-year-old mother were also very impressed.

It was disappointing not to see the starry sky, but more than that, I was completely satisfied with Mr. Yamauchi's warm and thoughtful service throughout the day in Maui.

Just being able to see the countless stars scattered in the mid-mountain was amazing, so I can only imagine how wonderful the starry sky at the summit must be. I definitely want to try again to see the twilight sunset and the starry sky. Next time, I will aim for Haleakalā. I look forward to your assistance again then!

Beautiful Ranch & Horseback Ride

This Horseback Ride was absolutely a BEAUTIFUL Adventure,. Everyone at the RANCH, especially, FRENCHY, our Tour guide was friendly, fun and informative on the ride about ALL the Beauty of the Island & Mendes Ranch History. They were giving of their time to the ones that were a little less experienced in riding & took pictures of everyone in differnet areas of the ride to make sure we ALL caputured great memories on film. We had the opportunity to gallop if we chose throughout the ride as well. The Horses are well cared for & are Beautiful. We had "Bailey" & "Cowboy" and Frenchy had Beautiful "Shotgun". I would definetly go back next trip to MAUI.

We had a nice ride and the horses were matched up with our weight, age, and skill level as stated. This was my third time riding in 20 years and I went as a beginner and did well. I was concerned that I was a pre-pre-pre beginner. Yet I survived and have 3 nice pictures and some good memories of the trail. We had 2 tour guides and my regret is that I wished I'd given more beside $10 for a tip since they were watching my back so to speak :)

Initially, I signed up because I wanted to watch the sunset from the mountain with my family, but I was surprised by the experience! I got to see the rare silver sword plant that only blooms once every few decades, and we had the chance to do serious stargazing with a telescope (we even saw shooting stars!). Above all, the explanations provided by Mr. Yamauchi, with his extensive knowledge of astronomy, were truly moving.

The only regret was that the sunset was hidden by clouds, but I had a wonderfully fulfilling time. I've heard that Hawaii is known as a mecca for stars, and it seems like many stars can be observed here. Until now, I only had the image of Hawaii as a place for marine sports, so this was a new discovery for me. Later, when I asked a few Japanese residents living in Maui, it seems that Mr. Yamauchi's stargazing sessions are quite famous.

最初は家族で山からサンセットを見られるということで申込みましたが、参加してみてびっくり！
数十年に一度しか開花しない銀剣草の花を見られたり、本格的な望遠鏡での天体観測ができたり（流れ星も見えました！）、そしてなにより山内さんの豊富な天文知識による解説が感動的でした。
唯一、サンセットが雲に隠れて見えなかったのが心残りですが、すごく充実した時間を過ごせました。
ハワイは星のメッカと言われているらしく、たくさんの星が観測できるようです。これまで、ハワイにはマリンスポーツのイメージしかなかった私には、新たな発見でした。
後でマウイ在住の日本人数人に聞いたところ、山内さんの天体観測は結構有名みたいです。

I participated in this tour through a friend's introduction. It was our first trip to Hawaii as a couple! Since I had made the reservation online in advance, it was easy to confirm everything by phone once we arrived in Maui. On the day of the tour, I went with my family. At Krispy Kreme, I was amazed that I could eat donuts right away, as in Tokyo you usually have to wait in line! After that, we enjoyed ice cream that can only be found in Hawaii, which was delicious!

After filling our stomachs, it was finally time to start our hike (by car). As we gained altitude, the scenery became incredibly beautiful, but the air got thinner and it started to get cold. Thankfully, I was lent a down jacket, so it wasn't a problem. However, being sensitive to the cold, bringing a heat pack was definitely the right choice! It seemed that Takarin didn't need one, though. Along the way, we saw a flower that only blooms once every twenty years! It was amazing!

Finally, it was time for the sunset! It was a wonderful and emotional moment. It was truly beautiful and an incredible experience that you can't see in Japan! I definitely want to go back and see it again! I hope everyone gets to experience this too. I took a lot of photos. The experience was so amazing that I forgot all about the cold!

Satisfied, we were then treated to Chef Yamauchi's special bento! It was incredibly delicious!

Lastly, we had stargazing. We all exclaimed "Wow!" at the starry sky we had never seen before. The Milky Way, constellations, and the Big Dipper... we were overwhelmed by the stunning starry sky! The crescent moon we saw through the telescope was full of craters. I was also moved by Yamauchi's stories! I feel like my emotions have grown (in a good way). I'm really glad I participated in this tour. It was a great happiness to share so many encounters and emotions with everyone and my loved ones. When I go back to Maui, I will definitely join this tour again to see Yamauchi!

今回お友達の紹介でこのツアーに参加しました。
２人での初めてのハワイ旅行！
事前にネットで予約していたのでマウイ島に着いてからは電話での確認のみで簡単でした。
当日はFamilyと一緒に行きました。クリスピークリームドーナツは東京ではまだまだ並ばないと食べれないのに…なんとすぐに食べられました！
その後は山内さんの好きなハワイにしかないアイスクリームをご馳走していただきました☆ちょーおいしかったぁ~

お腹もいっぱいになって、いよいよ登山開始！(車でね）
標高が高くなるにつれて景色はすごく綺麗で…でもだんだん空気が薄くなり、寒さがやってきました。
でも、ダウンを貸していただいたので問題なしでした。でも…寒がりなまりりんはホッカイロ持参したのは正解でした！！たかりんにはホッカイロは必要なかったみたい。。。
途中で20年に一度しかみることのできないお花をみちゃいました！！！すごいなぁ~
いよいよ☆サンセットです！！！素敵＆感動の瞬間☆
まじで綺麗で…日本では見ることのできない素晴しい感動でした！！！絶対また行きたいし、見たい！！！みんなにも是非行ってほしいです。いっぱい写真も撮っちゃいました。
寒さなんて忘れちゃうくらいすごいんだよ！

満足してその後はシェフ山内特製幕の内弁当の登場！！！
これがまたちょーおいしかったぁ~

今までみたこともない星空にみんなで「すご~い」
天の川とか星座とか北斗七星とか…とにかく満点の星空に感動の連発でした☆☆☆

My wife,daughter and I spent 10 days on Maui.The highlight was going on this horseback ride.Trails with breathtaking views, a well informed and friendly staff.Our guides Frenchy and Steve made this very enjoyable. The staff was very good in joining riders experience to the right horse. Being beginners, we were a bit nervous at first.Our guides put us right at ease and that made for a much more enjoyable ride. I would highly recommend this activity.
