I was guided to Haleakalā by Mr. Yamauchi from Maui All Stars.

Before it got dark, I was moved by the stunning display of the setting sun and the sea of clouds below, painted in shades of crimson. As the sun set and darkness fell, countless stars began to shine in the sky. Thanks to Mr. Yamauchi's extensive expertise and equipment, I was able to easily identify the names of the stars and constellations sparkling in the night sky. This sight was something that couldn't be captured by a camera, so I etched the starry sky into my heart.

I was particularly excited to see both the Big Dipper and the Southern Cross at the same time, which are rarely visible together. I don't think such luck will come my way again, but I hope to create another opportunity to visit. If you ever go to Maui, be sure to visit for the sunset and starry sky at Haleakalā. And do it with Mr. Yamauchi as your guide... Kiba.

暗くなるまでの時間は、沈みゆく太陽と足下の雲海がくりなす茜色の競演に感動しました。
陽が落ち暗くなると空に無数の星が輝き始めましたが、山内さんの豊富な専門知識と機材のお陰で、満点の空に煌めく星の名前や星座が手に取るように判り感動しました。この光景はとてもカメラには捉えられないので、心に星空を焼き付けました。
特に、滅多に見られないと言う「北斗七星と南十字星」が一度に見られ興奮しました。こんな幸運はこの先訪れないと思いますが、機会を作ってまた訪れたいと思います。
皆さんもマウイ島に行かれた時は、是非「ハレアカラ山の夕焼けと星空」を見に訪れてください。

I participated in the Haleakalā sunset and stargazing tour in June. I was thoroughly entertained by the guide, Yamapi, whose explanations I had seen in the media. The sea of clouds, sunset, and starry sky at Haleakalā were more beautiful than anything I had ever seen before. Additionally, the local food I was recommended to buy along the way was so delicious that I ended up going back for more during my trip. I highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Maui.

The stargazing, including the explanation, was great, but the summit was crowded, so we turned back and headed to the observation point. Last time we were able to reach the summit, so I was expecting to do so again this time. There were quite a few breaks along the way, so if you're going to list Haleakalā Summit in the title, please ensure that the schedule allows for a guaranteed ascent.

Wonderful guide, 100% recommend over other Haleakala experiences

Yoshi is an excellent, enthusiastic guide who takes great pictures! He provided a lot of neat information about Maui and Haleakala along with extensive knowledge about the stars. You are picked up from fairly accessible locations, and I'm glad to pay for someone experienced in driving the roads, which can get narrow and quite close to cliff edges. Three stops along the way before the peak to get accustomed to the gradual climb in altitude. The actual crater couldn't be seen due to clouds, but Haleakala was still quite beautiful to see. I chose the sunset tour because I didn't want to get up that early for sunrise, and I'm glad I did! I was well rested and the sunset was beautiful. Yoshi provided comfortable camp chairs, warm coats, gloves, and hot tea as we waited for the sunset. You need to bring your own dinner, so don't forget to pack it! It was great, super peaceful, quiet, and comfy! Once night fell, Yoshi brought out some high-tech telescopes and pointed out constellations. I got to see Mars! It was a very clear night and amazing to see all the stars filling the sky. Informative and quite the experience. Afterwards, he drove us back. I really enjoyed this tour and highly recommend!

I participated with my wife and two daughters (ages 6 and 12). We were all very satisfied as we were able to see a stunning sunset along with many stars. They provided telescopes and binoculars, allowing us to observe closely, and thanks to Yamapi's guidance, we had a very enjoyable time with his rich knowledge and storytelling.

They do lend out warm clothing, but it can still be quite cold, so I recommend bringing layers to wear underneath. The cold seemed to affect the children particularly.

We absolutely loved our stargazing adventure with Yoshi! He thought of everything, including taking us to a private spot, blankets, hot beverages, chairs, as well as a wealth of knowledge and some incredible telescopes and binoculars. We were fortunate enough to have a tour with just the four of us on the day of our trip and we enjoyed every minute of it. Not only was Yoshi, friendly, courteous and knowledgeable but he also drove incredibly safely and stopped plenty of times for bathrooms and was just an all-around pleasure. We would certainly recommend Yoshi to anyone looking to have an excellent stargazing experience on Maui.

It’s really much more than a great sunset

This was an amazing experience in every step. Our guide, Yoshi, was super nice and cared for each one of us making sure that we felt comfortable and safe on each part of the trip. He taught us a lot about the stars, NASA and the culture of the Island while showing us amazing landscapes and taking incredible pictures of us. He provided blankets and hot tea/coffee to stay warm. Words can’t fully describe this experience. We totally recommend it!

Amazing tour despite weather conditions

My girlfriend and I got to enjoy a private tour by Yoshi up Haleakalā, and I’ve rarely encountered a tour guide with such love for his profession and adopted home. Unfortunately it was very cloudy so we couldn’t see the stars, but Yoshi took us to a great pizza place and we chatted for several hours and learned so much about Japan and Maui. We will be back next time we’re in Maui and we will make sure it’s during the summer months for better weather conditions. I would strongly recommend taking a tour with him (and when given the option go for ice cream), as he will work so hard to ensure you have the greatest time.
Also don’t be too worried about it being cold, it was around 45F when we were there, and at least for me I was fine in a t-shirt.

We participated as a family of three. Since it was Christmas Eve, the summit was very crowded, and we couldn't see the sunset from the top, but they still took us to the best position without rushing. The stargazing was done in a less crowded spot, and I was shown the best starry sky of my life. I was so moved that words can't express it. A huge thank you to our tour guide, Yama-chan. Thank you very much!

By the way, we initially thought about going by rental car, but joining the tour was definitely the right choice. The unfamiliar mountain roads in the dark were dangerous, and thanks to the slow ascent to the summit, we didn't have to worry about altitude sickness. They also took care of our warmth, and if you can see the starry sky, I highly recommend this tour.

There were no temperature checks or mask requirements. I think it was due to the convenience of our condominium pickup location, but we did not stop by Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. It was fully booked, and we were with a group of people not only from Japan but also from other countries. There was a guide who spoke both Japanese and English. Yamapi-san paid attention to even the smallest details. When we stopped by the supermarket to buy dinner, he provided detailed advice and assistance. He mentioned that he comes to Haleakalā five times a week, so I felt he was a veteran guide who knows this area very well. His photography skills are also professional level.

However, with real-time weather information and the mountain guide's experience, we decided to wait a bit, believing that the skies would clear. Indeed, the skies opened up, and we were able to fully enjoy the beautiful starry sky! Their ability to adapt and respond with such experience, even under poor conditions, was truly impressive.

I signed up for this tour in Maui hoping for a valuable experience. The hotel pickup made the two-hour drive enjoyable thanks to Yamapi's fun talk. Along the way, we were able to buy delicious local food and enjoyed dinner at the summit.

At the summit, the magnificent crater, 360-degree views, and the sunset sinking into the sea of clouds were enchanting, allowing me to forget my everyday worries. The starry sky after sunset was also amazing; I could quietly gaze at the Milky Way and other stars, bringing back precious memories from my childhood. I'm grateful to Yamapi for showing us famous star clusters and planets through the GPS telescope.

It's definitely a must-see tour!

初めていったマウイで何か貴重な体験を、と思い申し込みました。
ホテル送迎で、片道2時間のドライブも山ピーさんの楽しいトークで楽しく過ごせました。途中おいしいローカルフードも買えて、山頂での夕食を堪能しました。

It's on my list of 10 things I want to do before I die! I want to see the starry sky at Haleakalā. After three years due to the pandemic, I'm finally back in Hawaii, and it's my first time on Maui. I immediately signed up for a stargazing tour. On the day of the tour, we were picked up at the hotel at 3:30 AM. There were two young Japanese couples and two senior women, including us. Our guide, Mr. Yamapi, was very talkative! I found myself chatting along too (laughs). We bought donuts at Krispy Kreme and poke at Foodland. Off we went to Haleakalā! We took a bathroom break at the visitor center. As we acclimated to the altitude, we made our way to the summit. As soon as we arrived at the top, a blizzard hit.

"Don't worry! I've secured the fifth point, so I will definitely show you," Mr. Yamapi said confidently. We started our descent in a blizzard where we could barely see a meter ahead. Running down the dark (or white?) mountain path from 3055 meters felt like home. And then, at the second point, we got to see the sunset at the same height as the clouds! It was moving. Then it started raining again, and we began to move. I wondered if Mr. Yamapi was navigating by watching the clouds. At the third point, he quickly set up chairs, telescopes, and other equipment...

"Don't look at the sky until I say it's okay," he told us, raising our excitement! We were fully prepared with borrowed warm clothing, and off we went! Wow! It was emotional! Even though it was a blizzard! Even though it was pouring rain! The strong winds were still trying to blow us away!

The 360-degree starry sky was perfect. It was truly the skill of a veteran guide! I'm really glad I participated. I will surely be moved every time I go. I think I will definitely return to see that starry sky again! I plan to go back to Haleakalā to deliver some pickled vegetables as a souvenir for Mr. Yamapi!
