Unfortunately, due to the strong winds from the hurricane, the path to the summit was closed on the day of the visit. However, there was a possibility that if negotiations were successful at the Onizuka Center, the path might be opened, so I went to the Onizuka Center. But the result was... it was indeed not possible.

That said, it was good that I was able to get to Onizuka! The tour fee was refunded later for the portion that I couldn't complete to the summit (not the full amount, but $200 out of $400). Well, we can't win against the forces of nature! This will be a lesson for next time!

After five years of waiting due to the opposition to the observatory expansion and COVID-19, I was finally able to participate in the sunset tour. The company advertised having Japanese-speaking guides, but due to the impact of COVID-19, it seems they laid off most of the Japanese guides because there were many domestic (U.S.) users. During my visit, the guide was an American with experience working at a U.S. military base, and aside from casual conversations near the Onizuka Center and confirming the meeting time, everything was in English. The explanations along the way, including stories about Hawaii's only Army training base, were all in English, but even with my limited English knowledge from middle school to university, I understood about half of it. Of course, the meeting time and important notes were explained in Japanese, but I felt the English explanations were sufficient.

For the stargazing, two vehicles were used in the parking lot between the summit and the center, with only two Japanese participants. We were divided into two groups for English and Japanese explanations, and one person who spoke Japanese provided dedicated explanations. The photos taken during that time, as well as the best photos that the guide had likely taken previously, were received directly through the Aiphone communication feature. Previously, we would receive them later via the website, but with Aiphone, we could do it on the spot by pairing our phones. It seems that those using phones with OS like Samsung might not know how to do this, so I wonder what they do? After returning to the meeting place and dispersing, I was given a ride to a nearby hotel. I was spared a 20-minute walk at night, but this was only because everyone else returned to their cars from the meeting place or were from nearby hotels, so it was just a coincidence that I got a ride. I heard that if Japanese tourists return, Japanese tours might resume.

The tour itself was fantastic, just like everyone else's experience, but I have two final points. The emergency toilet near the summit is very dirty, so it's better not to use it. Let's use the facilities at the Onizuka Center instead, as we will stop there after stargazing, which should take about three hours. Lastly, remember to give a tip when you get off the vehicle. 　天文台増設反対の封鎖とコロナ等で5年越しでサンセットツアーに参加できました。同社は日本語ガイドがあるのが売りでしたが、コロナの影響で景気のいい国内(米国)利用者が多くなったので、日系人のガイドをほとんどレイオフ?したみたいです。今回利用時は、在日米軍基地勤務経験がある米国人ガイドさんでしたが、オニヅカセンターや展望台付近の雑談や集合時間の確認以外はすべて英語でした。途中の説明は、ハワイ唯一の陸軍訓練基地の話など英語オンリーでの説明でしたが、特に英語は中学から大学までの勉強でしかしたことない私でも、半分くらいは分かりました。もちろん、集合時間、注意事項等は日本語で説明してくれましたが、先の英語の説明で十分わかりました。また、天体観測は、2台の車が、山頂からセンターの間の駐車場で行いましたが、日本人は２人だけで、英語と日本語の説明の二つのグループに分かれましたが、日本語が話せる1人が専属で説明してくれました。その時撮った写真や、以前ガイドさんが撮ったと思われるベストな写真は、Aiphoneの通信機能でそのまま受け取りました。以前は後日ホームページでの受け取りでしたが、Aiphoneだとその場で携帯付き合わせてできます。サムスン等のOSを使った携帯はやり方がわからないみたいなのでどうするんでしょう?集合場所に戻り解散してから近くのホテルまで送ってもらいました。夜道を20分ほど歩かなくて済みましたが、あくまで、他の方が全員集合場所から各自が車で帰ったり、直近のホテルの方だったので、たまたま、送ってもらうことが出来ました。日本人がまた戻ってきたら日本語ツアーが再開されるかもとのことです。ツアーの素晴らしさは申し分なく他の方と同じですが、最後に2点。山頂付近の緊急用トイレは非常に汚いので使用しない方が良いです。オニヅカセンターで済ませましょう。天体観測後にも寄るので、しょうみ3時間くらいでしょうか。最後にチップは降車時に渡しますので忘れないようにしましょう。私は、数年前、最初の利用の時(当時の「B級グルメツアー」)、完全に日本人だけのツアーでその快適さから錯覚してチップ忘れたことがあり、今も少しトラウマになっています。今回も満足度に合わせて3段階のチップをポーチに用意して、最後に渡しました。途中の説明が英語と日本語で2回してくれたなら20％渡したと思いますが、今回は約15％程度としました。

The only complaint I have is that the van we used for transportation was full and quite cramped. The travel time was long, and the roads were bad, so I hope this can be improved. (The driver was also lamenting about it...)

I have visited the Big Island of Hawaii many times, but this time I participated because my child turned 16. I was impressed by the beauty of the stars, the vastness of the sky, and its size. They took family photos for us, and since we were the only Japanese people there, they spoke to us not only in English but also in Japanese. On the day I participated, we were divided into a group of only Japanese participants and another group from other countries, so I was able to have a guide in Japanese. Even as a woman participating alone, I had a great time. Our driver and guide, Stefan, was fluent in Japanese and provided an enjoyable tour while also taking wonderful photos. Thank you, Sue.

The temperature, weather, and wind were all perfect that day, but since this is all dependent on nature, it's just luck. However, I've heard that there can be differences in weather stability depending on the season, so it would be good to research that before planning. Stargazing is not suitable when the moon is bright, so if you can choose your dates, I recommend planning around the moon phase.

We only observed a few stars through the telescope (just Venus on that day), so you might want to consider that as a bonus. However, there were plenty of explanations using a pointer, and I believe the beauty of the stars here is something you can't see anywhere else. It felt like a dream to be able to go up to 4,205 meters by car without experiencing altitude sickness. I'm glad I participated!

星空観測は月が明るいと不向きなので、日程を選べる場合は、月齢を見て計画されると良いと思います。
望遠鏡で星を観るのは、ほんの一部（この日は金星のみ）でした。なので、これは おまけと考えた方がいいかも知れません。
でも、ポインターを使っての説明は沢山してくださるし、ここの星の美しさは他では見られないものだと思います。
こんな風に高山病になることなく、車で4205メートルまで行けることが夢のようでした。

Fortunately, all the participants were Japanese, so the Japanese guide provided detailed explanations and took beautiful photos. I was able to enjoy Mauna Kea, which I had wanted to visit once in a lifetime. The weather was bad on the ground, and I was worried, but as the guide said, once we got above the clouds, the new moon allowed us to see the stars clearly, and the wind was gentle, making for a comfortable tour without needing to wear pants.

The only disappointing thing was that I was told the snacks for a member who couldn't participate due to health issues were lost somewhere, so we couldn't hand them out.

幸運にも全員日本人参加者だった為、日本語ガイドさんが、詳しく説明してくれ、写真も綺麗に撮ってくれた。一生に一度行きたかった、マウナ・ケアを堪能できました。地上は天気が悪く、心配してましたがガイドさんのいう通り、雲の上に出れば新月で星も良く見えて、風も弱かったので、ズボンを履かないで快適なツアーでした。

In late May, I participated in a sunset and stargazing tour at the summit of Mauna Kea, which was an incredibly valuable experience. Since there were many Japanese participants, our perfect bilingual guide, Sue, navigated in Japanese.

The local information that isn't found in guidebooks, the mysterious and magnificent scenery along the way, the unexpected cold despite being in a tropical location (and the warmth of the borrowed jackets), the delicious sandwiches we had at the summit, the breathtaking sunset, the ever-changing colors of the sky and clouds, the opening of the observatory and the start of the observations, and the view of the star-filled sky and constellations—all of these were truly wonderful and exceeded my expectations, providing a surprising and moving experience.

During the stargazing, when Sue pointed out the constellations and we were all gazing at them, a huge shooting star passed by, and everyone cheered together. That became an unforgettable memory.

日本人参加者が多い回だったので、完璧なバイリンガルガイドのスーさんが、日本語でナビゲートしてくださいました。

This was my first tour on the Big Island of Hawaii, and the reservation process and pickup location on the day were very clear. Although I couldn't speak English, there were staff members who assisted in Japanese, and I was very satisfied with the service. The van that arrived at the meeting place was labeled Hawaiian Eyes Tour, with no mention of the operating company, Masashi Nature School, which was confusing. There was no such information provided by VELTRA, but upon checking the Masashi Nature School's website, it clearly stated that the operating company is Hawaiian Eyes Tour. (I wish this had been communicated through VELTRA as well.)

On the day of the tour, there were ten guests, six of whom were Japanese. According to the guide, the number of Japanese customers has decreased due to the pandemic, so there are no longer Japanese language tours. The guide could speak some Japanese, but not enough to provide a full tour in that language, so the entire ride was in English.

That said, the sunset from the mountain top and stargazing were great experiences, and the guide made an effort to explain things in Japanese, which I personally appreciated. Additionally, I was grateful to receive the photos the guide took via AirDrop.

We were staying at a hotel in Waikoloa, so it was helpful that we were dropped off there on the way back. However, there were two Japanese guests from a hotel outside the Kona area who mistakenly thought they would be dropped off at their hotel and ended up getting off at the pickup location, Queens Marketplace. Considering that it's difficult to catch a taxi in that area and the return time was before 10 PM, I think it would be beneficial to offer a paid option for hotel drop-off.

　当日は、１０人の客で、うち日本人は６人いたが、ガイドさんによると、コロナ禍で日本人客が減ったから日本語ツアーは無くなったとのこと。
　ガイドさんも日本語はできるが案内するほどの語学力がない、ということで、行き帰りの車中はずっと英語だった。
　とはいえ、山頂の夕陽や星空観測等、ガイドさんが、日本語でも頑張って案内してくれて、個人的には非常に良かった。
　また、ガイドさんが撮ってくれた写真もAirDropでもらえたのもありがたかった。
　私たちは、ワイコロアのホテルに泊まっていたので帰りはホテルまで送ってもらって助かった。
　ただ、コナ地区外のホテルから参加していた日本人の親子２人組が、帰りホテルまで送ってもらえると勘違いしていて、結局ピックアップ場所のクイーンズマーケットプレイスで降りることになった。
　タクシーもなかなか捕まらない土地柄で、帰着時間が22時前になるということを考えると、有償でのホテルまでの送ってくれるオプションがあると良いのではないかと思った。

We were blessed with wonderful sunsets and starry skies thanks to the weather and moon phase. The tour was primarily in English, but our guide Shoyo kindly explained everything in Japanese as well. Taking commemorative photos under the starry sky can be challenging for amateurs, but the guide took amazing pictures with his mirrorless camera. The sandwiches and warm drinks provided along the way were also very delicious.

We received information about nighttime Kilauea sightseeing, and we were able to enjoy the tour without any issues. We made the best memories on the Big Island of Hawaii. Thank you very much!
