Big Island
The day before the tour, I received a notification about a change in the pickup time. It was only 15 minutes earlier, but since I don't frequently check my emails while traveling, I almost missed it.
On the day of the tour, there were other guests, but perhaps due to the large number of participants, our family of four was directed to a larger boat that seemed to be a different English tour boat called "Hang Loose." We joined about 20 foreign guests on board. A Japanese guide accompanied us, and since the explanations were provided in Japanese, we had no difficulties. However, it felt a bit misleading to call this a "small group of up to 10 people" (although it was true that the guide was only responsible for our family of four). I also felt that the content of the tour was somewhat different from what other Japanese guests experienced.
In the end, I actually thought it was better for our family to be on the boat we were assigned to. First, the Japanese guide who also handled the transportation to the hotel was dedicated solely to our family of four, creating a private guide experience. On the boat, they were attentive to our health and provided light snacks, and they constantly supported our two elementary school children, who were not very familiar with the sea, which made us feel secure.
Shortly after departure, we spotted dolphins and entered the water twice. Although we didn't spend a long time in the water due to our inexperience with snorkeling, the children were able to see the dolphins. After the second time, when we got back on the boat, it sped off to a distant location. The guide informed us that this boat also takes guests to Captain Cook. In the waters in front of the Captain Cook monument, we were able to leisurely see many fish while snorkeling. It seemed that the relaxed snorkeling at Captain Cook suited our children better than the hurried movements chasing dolphins. After that, the boat returned while we enjoyed the view of the cliffs along the coast.
Although the content was somewhat different from what was described at the time of booking, our family was very satisfied with the tour, and we are very grateful to the guide who assisted us. However, if you strongly wish to swim with dolphins, you might be disappointed if you end up on a boat similar to ours.
The phone call for reconfirmation until the day before was a hassle. I don't understand why it's necessary when I've already paid with a credit card. Moreover, since I was planning to participate on the day of arrival, I had to call from Japan considering the time difference.
When I asked about the rain policy, they said that if it rains heavily, we would go under the roof. In the case of a storm, they would decide around 5 PM whether to cancel or not.
After reading other people's experiences, I was surprised to see a long line when I went to line up before 5 PM! Perhaps it was because it was the high season in late July. Registration started at 5:30 PM, and we got to wear shell leis for photos. You can upgrade to flower or nut leis for an additional fee. You can refuse the photo session.
Seating is based on the order of the line. If you pay about 20 dollars more, you can get a table at the very front.
The host talks a lot and sings as well. The English isn't too difficult, and you can still enjoy it even if you don't understand everything. There are hula lessons, traditional games, and stamp tattoos. They show you the whole roasted pig being pulled up, followed by a performance where the king lands from the sea. You're instructed to get your meal from the front tables. Drinks are all-you-can-drink (some are paid), but the bar is far away and inconvenient.
You can see dances from various Polynesian regions. The fire dance was the most exciting. I saw a similar show at Fish Eye in Guam, but the stage here is smaller overall, and there are fewer dancers. The fire dance only has one male performer.
I can tell they are trying to entertain us, but it was very long, and I ended up dozing off a bit.
At the end, you can take photos with the dancers using your phone or other devices. No one seemed to be tipping. The price of the show is much cheaper than in Waikiki, but since I haven't seen it in Waikiki, I can't compare the cost performance.
I was able to see many beautiful fish! As a bonus, about ten dolphins came by, and we snorkeled together!! The staff were kind, and I had a great time! There were no other Japanese people besides us, but we enjoyed it enough!!
I participated hoping to see the magma of Kilauea Volcano, but due to weather conditions, the "Waipi'o Valley and Kilauea Volcano Tour" was canceled, and instead, we had the "Kohala Mountains and Hamakua Coast Tour." It was disappointing, but I look forward to the next opportunity. The female pilot was very skilled, and I felt safe while sightseeing.
I participated with my middle school daughter. Both of us lacked sufficient English skills, so there were many parts of the guide's explanations that we couldn't understand. They would answer our questions, but there wasn't much kindness or consideration shown. It was raining quite a bit, and it felt like we were just turning back on the same path, making the journey monotonous. The rain gear they provided was excellent, and we didn't get wet at all in the covered areas. I wonder if it would have felt nice if it had been sunny.
This adventure was awesome! Lots of fish at both areas but especially the second area. We were the only boat at the second place we went to and there were tons of fish! I wish I would've taken my own snorkel gear but I'll make sure I do next time. Their gear was ok though.
5 hours was a good amount of time and we didn't feel rushed at either stopping area.
The breakfast was good.
I don't eat meat and the veggie burger that they made was pretty bad. I have never had a veggie burger that I liked. I love having everything on a bun with cheese though and that was great.
We paddled for about an hour in a kayak. It felt great and was a lot of fun. A few points to note:
- I went out without applying sunscreen, and my legs ended up getting badly sunburned. Be careful as you expose your legs to the sun while kayaking.
Overall, the trip was outstanding. The views were great...a once in a lifetime opportunity. I would recommend this tour to anyone that doesn’t get sea sick.
The only reason I gave 4 rather than 5 stars is I grew up on the Pacific Ocean and have piloted 16’ boat through much choppier waters than we saw. The tour advertises you WILL get wet, and you WILL “feel” the ride, and our captain MADE sure each of us did just that. Unnecessary bottoming out of the boat, turning into waves to drench the passengers and speeding into wave swells made an awesome, incredible trip just good. Speaking to my wife, and several other families that we met on the boat afterward, they all had the same independent view that the captain and crew intentionally made the ride tougher and drenched the passengers to “live up” to their online advertising.
About two weeks prior to our trip, the “lava bomb” was all over the news(yes, it was the same company) and it was well documented that the captains needed to stay at least 900 feet away from lava flowing into the ocean per US coast guard regulations. You’d think that with the recent accident, the captain would’ve been much more safety conscious than what was described above, as well as getting within 150-200 feet on numerous occasions.
Husband and I throughly enjoyed the excursion! Our guide blew us away with his well rounded knowledge of the island, its geography and history. The coffee farm and meal were a special treat before an evening of stargazing.
I wasn't sure if the tour was worth the money, and also read one negative review about this, which made me hesitant to book the tour. But with the current situation with volcano, the ways available to see lava is either by air or from a boat. I decided to go with the more affordable one.
The ride was very rough. It was fun at first but by the time we got to the point where we can see lava my husband was sea sick and pretty much throwing up everything he had for breakfast and didn't have any energy to actually enjoy the view. I was feeling a bit sick too but not enough to throw up and was able to see how lava was flowing into ocean and how smoke/steam was rising. The view was absolutely spectacular and I don't think you can see anything like that unless you come here. Hence, I'd recommend the tour to everyone but with a medicine for sea sick just in case ;)
Great crew very attentive kind and funny what a great way to see Dolphins in the wild you can stay with the group or get outside by yourself must do trip you and your family will love it. Bill
It was a fun time! The crew were funny and let my son steer the boat. Saw 4 sea turtles. Did it for my parents and 2 young sons to have a good time and they did. Highly recommend
At first, I was a little scared, but it was a lot of fun. I have a fear of heights, but I was okay. It was a bit chilly in the mountains, so I regretted going in light clothing.
We thoroughly enjoyed the Manta Ray excursion. The tour guide was great with telling us about the history of this tour and details about the behavior and nature of these Manta Rays. My daughter was most impressed. Although she’s 9yo and a good swimmer, she was still a little nervous about snorkeling at night and meeting these Manta Rays that could come inches to your face. However, the tour guide has made everyone felt safe and she was able to enjoy the magnificence of these gentle sea creatures. Highly recommended
Thank you for joining us and thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are happy to hear you and your family enjoyed the manta excursion. Aloha!
once in a lifetime opportunity. Would recommend it to anyone
The tour that day consisted of just two people, including myself, who had snorkeling experience. I'm grateful they held the tour with the minimum number of participants.
First, we searched for dolphins off the coast of Kailua-Kona. There were many tour boats gathering around a pod of dolphins, and the sea was already filled with people! The waters off Kailua-Kona were as crowded as Takeshita Street! Amidst all this, Captain K skillfully predicted the dolphins' movements and dropped us in an area with fewer people.
By repeating the process of moving the boat, dropping us, surfacing, and moving again, we were able to chase the pod of dolphins more dynamically, doubling our chances! Dolphins surfaced right in front of us to breathe and passed by!
According to our guide, "Dolphins will avoid people if they're in a bad mood," but today we were lucky, and the dolphins didn't seem to mind people. It was a lucky day! I had a fantastic time on the tour! When I visit the Big Island again, I will definitely join another tour! Mahalo!
Mahalo!
They booked me a spot I wasn't able to book directly through the company; and at a cheaper pricer!!
First of all, this activity is a test of physical strength and mental stamina. It's not recommended for those who are prone to motion sickness.
Regular motion sickness medication may not be effective, so it's best to take a stronger anti-nausea medication in advance.
Additionally, a wetsuit (10 dollars) is essential. It gets very cold on the water, and the 40-minute manta ray viewing can be quite tough. The return trip is especially challenging. The water is extremely cold after sunset, and even in summer, a wet body can feel freezing.
In addition to drying off, it's necessary to bring a towel for warmth, so make sure to take a thick one.
That said, you don't need to worry about not seeing manta rays; they come quite close and swim around, providing a thrilling manta ray show.
Moreover, it seems that other tour companies are watching from a distance, likely due to the equipment of this tour, so they aren't very close. If you want to enjoy the closest manta rays, I recommend this tour.
The guide, Alicia, speaks Japanese, which I thought was very good.
Lastly, I want to emphasize again that managing your health and body temperature, as well as maintaining your physical and mental stamina, is essential. I do not recommend bringing children. The family next to us had to leave because their child couldn't handle it.
When we returned to the boat, we had a hard time getting the raft close, and our stamina was running low; it felt like we were about to get lost. The sea might have been rough, but it was quite dangerous. My wife was on the verge of getting lost or drowning.
Also, after the tour, the area around the parking lot is pitch dark, and there are no facilities like showers. The only thing available is a dimly lit restroom.
Changing clothes is impossible, so it's best to head back as you are. It's scary even without considering safety concerns.
Aloha, Ryu,
Thank you for participating in the manta tour. I apologize for the lack of care as the sea conditions were poor and it was frightening. Also, thank you for your appropriate advice regarding thick towels and such. I will take your valuable feedback into account for future tours.

I couldn't believe I could meet manta rays so close. I was moved to see five manta rays. It was a wonderful tour.
Aloha, Sakura-chan,
Thank you for participating in the manta tour. We are all very happy that you were able to experience something that is hard to come by in Japan. When you visit Oahu again, we also have tours for dolphin middle school and university, so we look forward to seeing you again.

I was a bit anxious about my English, so I requested a consent form in advance, filled it out, and brought it with me. We were the only Japanese participants, and the guide spoke entirely in English, but I understood the instructions, and even those who are not good at English can manage if they enjoy the activities. I also got along well with the other participants. After the tour, there was a photo sale, like at Disneyland attractions, and if there's one thing I regret now, it's not buying those photos.
Excelllent trip. Microphone would of been nice. Hard to hear everything. I would still recommend this tour!
Mahalo for a great review! We have recently been researching hands-free microphones. Yes, it would be very helpful.

I participated on the first night after arriving on the Big Island. Even though the encounter rate is 99%, I was worried that I might not see any... but that was not the case!! A total of nearly six manta rays appeared, showing their bellies while feeding. They came so close that it felt like I could touch them, and it was an amazing sight. The guide was also very kind and attentive, and I had a truly wonderful time. Next time I come to the Big Island, I would like to participate in the manta ray experience again.
Aloha, Miporin,
Thank you for participating in the manta tour. We are all thrilled that you were able to experience the excitement of seeing wild mantas up close enough to touch.
When you come to Oahu again, we also have tours such as the Dolphin Middle School and University, so we look forward to your next visit.

We only had one day on the big island and wanted to see as much as possible. This tour takes you all the way around with multiple, although brief stops and several locations. Could omit the coffee tasting and spend more time on the black beach or at the falls.
Our guide, Keith, was full of history, folk lore and traditional information which was a big bonus.
If you want history and a good whirlwind tour of the island, this tour is for you.
Of note, lunch was provided and this service has its own chef who prepares the meals. Very healthy sampling of the typical fare at area restaurants, however, when it’s served in lieu of a cold sandwich and a picturesque park, it suddenly becomes one of the best meals of the vacation.
One of the coolest things we’ve done. The Manta rays would get so close and were so graceful and gentle.
The crew, including Capt Mike Morgan, was awesome and ensured we had a fabulous time. I would rate this as a MUST DO on the big island! Experience of a lifetime!
Thank you for reviewing your trip with us. We are happy to know you enjoyed it. A Hui Hou!!
I was super hesitant to book this tour and unsure if it was worth the money at first. I finally decided, when am I ever going to get a chance to see an active volcano again? I am soooo glad I booked it. The captain and crew on this boat were absolutely wonderful, knowledgeable, and helpful to the seasick. The ride alone was a great time, the sunrise was amazing, and I was completely awe-struck at how close we rode to the lava and how long we stayed there to enjoy it.
I will highly recommend dramamine the night before and morning of as the ride out is a little rough. The crew is more than upfrint about this and super helpful if you do get sick. This review is coming from someone who gets extremely sea sick and threw up the entire ride back,
and I still would go again and think it was worth every penny. Beats a helicoptor tour by a million for the experience and cost!
I have done dolphin snorkeling in places like Honolulu, Guam, and the Ogasawara Islands, but this was the first time I encountered so many dolphins. In the early morning, the water was very clear, and I could see dolphins from a distance, but after a while, the water became murky, making it a bit difficult to find them even when they said, "There are dolphins!" However, I got to see baby dolphins and a lot of dolphin jumps, which made me very satisfied. There was someone in the tour who was free diving, and I was really envious of them. When we were leaving, the captain sped off at an incredible speed, so be careful! (laughs)
Even though I was sea sick, my husband and daughter had the time of their life that they described as surreal like a dream. The mantas were inches away from their faces doing rolls. An experience they will never forgot and well worth it. The captain and crew were very nice and sympathetic to my condition.
The meeting is at 15:30, and it takes about four hours in a relaxed manner. I didn't expect much from the food, and it turned out as I anticipated. However, if you can have a normal conversation in English, it might actually be quite interesting. We encountered dolphins, or rather, there was a dolphin show happening around the boat in a certain area of the sea.
During my second visit to the Big Island, I participated in the manta night snorkeling that I had wanted to join for a long time. At first, I was a bit anxious because we couldn't see them, but towards the end, the mantas came multiple times, making it the best day ever! I was truly moved to see that they really exist! The ocean around the Big Island is wonderful! In June, the water wasn't too cold, but the return trip on the rubber boat was uncomfortable and made me feel sick. Also, I arrived by rental car, but I panicked because I couldn't find the landmark sign. Has the sign changed? Please check for the sake of future visitors.
I was scared because the speed of the boat felt like it was going to fly away! It was more amazing than a banana boat! But even though I couldn't swim, it was good that there was a life jacket.
