I wanted to visit Mauna Kea, so I chose the Big Island as my first destination in Hawaii.

Regarding the starry sky, it was a bit disappointing that the moon was close to full, making it hard to see, but the view of the sunset and the array of telescopes was spectacular and wonderful.

Additionally, the tour description mentioned only an English guide, but our guide, Shota, was able to speak Japanese as well, which was very helpful as he provided guidance in both English and Japanese.

He also took some lovely photos, creating great memories.

Next time, I plan to check the lunar cycle carefully before visiting again! Thank you very much!

Gorgeous, unimaginably beautiful views. Very interesting and informative guided tour. Strenuous though, they warned us about the low oxygen and a couple people were visibly feeling ill. "Dinner" was hot but not very good (heavily salted vegetable lasagne).

My husband, adult daughter, and I had a spectacular time on this excursion. Our driver/guide/astronomy guru, Maka, was the lynch-pin of the whole experience. After seeing the beautiful sunset at the top, we scurried down to set up for our tour of the night sky. Maka has significant knowledge, a great sense of humor, and an amazing telescope! We all want a laser pointer now!! Fortunately, the three of us experienced only giddiness as an effect of the altitude…the three of us were silly and laughed so much. What a great memory! We had rented a Jeep for our week on the Big Island. Someone had suggested we were wasting our money going on a tour, rather than driving ourselves. But, though the tour was not inexpensive, it was worth every penny for the experience! Highly recommend!!

The weather was nice, with views of the ocean and waterfalls, and I enjoyed the increasingly long zip line while having a banana. I was worried about not being able to speak English, but they were very kind and made me feel at ease. I believe that even those who don't speak English can participate. The seventh zip line had a rainbow over the waterfall, which was amazing! Moreover, the landing spot was also interesting. It might have been a coincidence, but the other participants from California and other countries were all friendly and the tour had a great atmosphere.

英語ができないので心配していましたが、優しく対応してくださるので安心です。英語のできない方も参加可能だと、私的には思います。
7本目のジップラインは滝に虹がかかっていて、最高‼️でした。その上、着地地点も面白かったですよ。
たまたまかもしれませんが、カリフォルニアや他国から参加の他の方も、皆さん優しくて和やかで、雰囲気の良いツアーでした。

This hike adventure was awesome! The views at different stops along the way were just amazing. Our Guide Jon was great! He was a knowledgeable about so many things such as the local birds, plants and history of the area. Entering a lava tube that was hundreds of years old was interesting, and fun. Jon made sure our group remained safe and also had fun along the way. One has to experience this activity to really appreciate it! I would definitely recommend this activity.

I have visited the Big Island multiple times and had seen the starry sky from the slopes of Mauna Kea, so I thought there might not be anything particularly new. However, I was very moved by the sea of clouds and the sunset from the summit! I had no issues with altitude sickness, and even though I was lightly dressed in September, the warm clothing provided was more than enough. The warm cocoa was appreciated, and the sandwiches were very delicious as well. I was able to take many photos of the sunset and the starry sky, creating precious memories. The attached photo was taken with a compact digital camera that has a starry sky shooting mode that I brought along. I hope to participate in other tours again someday.

First Experience at 4000m
I was worried about altitude sickness and anemia, but taking breaks to acclimatize and gradually increasing the altitude, along with having warm clothing and enjoying sandwiches and cocoa, made it a good experience. I was able to participate without straining my body.
The scenery was truly something you can't see in Japan; it felt like I was experiencing both space and Earth, something only this tour offers. Priceless!
It was a view that made me want to participate again.

I joined in September, and as mentioned in the pre-tour briefing, it's essential to be well-prepared for the cold. I only wore the extreme warmth Heattech, but I think if I had a knit hat, gloves, and warm bottoms, I could have enjoyed stargazing outside even more (it was so cold that my hands went numb, so I spent the latter part warming up in the car).

My elderly parents, who were just within the participation requirements, also joined and had a great time without any worries! Perhaps because there were many Japanese participants, we felt reassured and enjoyed the tour with a Japanese guide. The guide not only took us to the locations but also provided detailed explanations about telescopes and stars, which were all fascinating and exciting. It was really great to have a tour to a place we couldn't visit on our own.

For sharing DSLR photos, iPhone users can use AirDrop, while others can share via Google Drive. All photos are shared with everyone who participated, so those who are concerned should take note. The photos we received were all beautiful, and I’m satisfied to have memories of the starry sky that wouldn’t show up on a smartphone!

Regarding the disbanding time, we stayed at Kingsland and arrived at the supermarket in time for the last shuttle bus, so I think those without rental cars can feel at ease. Thank you very much!

It was our 2nd time at the summit after 14 years with your company and we were more concerned about the summit weather due to last time it was so windy and cold to stay outside of the car.

But, the weather this time thanks to god it was good to watch the sunset.

Our driver was so nice was caring, professional skill of guiding and a gentleman.

He was caring everyone.
This made our trip OUTSTANDING.

I would recommend this trip to anyone eligible it is good tour with a Mercedes 4WD van with 14 passengers.

A little while ago, I experienced altitude sickness during the sunset tour, so I was a bit worried about the sunrise tour, but I was able to clear it up beautifully and enjoyed the sunrise energetically!

On September 20 (Friday) in Hawaii, my husband and I participated in a sunrise tour at the summit of Mauna Kea, a long-time dream of ours. We were really looking forward to this day as the highlight of our trip to the Big Island.

Although I had some anxiety about the harsh environment at an altitude of about 4,200 meters, the moment I witnessed its beauty, all my worries disappeared.

The tour started in the middle of the night, and as we made our way to the summit in the darkness, the wonderful narration by our tour guide, Aoki, welcomed us with a starry sky. The stars shone as if we could reach out and touch them, leaving us speechless in the face of their beauty. It felt as if we were being drawn into the universe.

We were thoroughly satisfied as we looked through the telescope at the moonbow, Saturn, Jupiter, Canopus, Sirius, and Betelgeuse, guided by Aoki.

Upon reaching the summit, we followed Aoki's instructions and put on warm clothing to prepare for the cold while waiting for the sunrise. Gradually, the sky began to change from pale purple to orange, and eventually, the sun slowly revealed itself. ハワイ現地9月20日（金）、私たち夫婦は長年の夢だったマウナケア山頂でのサンライズツアーに参加しました。ハワイ島での旅行のハイライトとして、この日をとても楽しみにしていました。

標高約4200メートルの過酷な環境に少し不安もありましたが、その美しさを目の当たりにした瞬間、その不安は一気に消え去りました。

Spending time at 4,205 meters while watching the sunset, along with views of Subaru and the sea of clouds, was a treasure.

It's a moment that makes me feel glad I came to the Big Island!

After making a reservation in Japan, head to the store counter at the designated time. It takes a bit of time to enter the tour's specified website and sign contracts in case of accidents. After that, you put on the gear, wear a helmet, and head up the mountain in a microbus. If you're wearing a baseball cap, you can wear it under the helmet, but other types are not allowed. Initially, you'll slide down a distance of about 20 meters to get accustomed to it after a safety briefing before starting.

The sunset viewed from the summit was incredibly beautiful, and I couldn't take my eyes off the scenery as it sank into the sea of clouds! Also, I think opportunities to climb a mountain over 4000 meters are rare, so I'm glad I participated! Personally, I appreciated that there were places where we didn't have to hike. The photos taken by the guide turned out great, and I am very satisfied!

The observatories and sunset I saw at the summit were wonderful. It was my first time staying at 4000 meters, but thanks to the advice on acclimatization and the guide's handling, I was able to go without getting altitude sickness. The guide, Koki, was well-studied and very helpful.

For stargazing, we went to a parking lot quite a bit down from the summit. Even though the summit was perfectly clear with not a single cloud, when we descended, there were clouds, and I really wanted to gaze at the stars in a clear sky. It was disappointing.

As we drove down, I could clearly see that there were clouds, and I was surprised, thinking, "Why are we going to a place with clouds when there's no cloud here?" I felt sad that I had come all this way to see the stars in a once-in-a-lifetime place, only to not fulfill that purpose. The view with the naked eye was about as good as the starry sky in Nagano, but I did manage to capture something that looked like the Milky Way using my iPhone's stargazing mode.

頂上で見た天文台群と夕日は素晴らしいものでした。

折角はるばる人生でまたとないところに星空を見に来て、雲一つ無い快晴の場所にいたのに、目的が果たせず悲しくなりました。
肉眼では長野の星空くらいの見え方でしたが、一応アイフォンの星空モードで何とかの天の川らしいものは撮れました。

Todd, our guide, was great. Great driving up the steep dirt road. Great info about the geology, topography, observatories, constellations and more. Engaging, informative. All the other details too - nice sandwich, hot beverage and clothing for the cold. Did I forget to mention the views? Fantastic views of the sun setting into the Pacific and a clear night sky.

I arrived at the Onizuka Center around 4 PM and quickly received a sandwich and water for dinner. Even though the Onizuka Center is at an altitude of 2,800 meters, my climbing experience has taught me that appetite decreases at higher altitudes, so I ate quickly. There are restrooms available here, and I put on the down jacket I brought. They also offer rental of warm clothing, so I think it's better to dress warmly.

I stayed for about an hour before departing for the summit. The path is unpaved, so it’s bumpy. It seems you can go by private car, but it’s not covered by rental car insurance, and if you damage it, the charges can be exorbitant. Perhaps due to the altitude, I felt sleepy, but I was warned that sleeping could worsen altitude sickness, so it’s strictly prohibited.

At the summit, which is over 4,000 meters, I changed locations about three times and waited for about an hour for the sunset at the last spot. After waiting for the sunset, we descended and stopped at a parking lot along the way for stargazing and a photo session, which took about an hour. Each time we took photos, we had to wait for cars leaving the parking lot or passing on the road, which took time. During this, it was extremely cold at around 3,500 meters.

The descent felt longer as it was darker, and I took my time. After passing the Onizuka Center, we took a break for the restroom and to change clothes. しばらく、1時間程度滞在して、頂上へ出発。
道が舗装されてないので、ガタガタします。
自家用車でも行けるみたいですが、レンタカーの保険適用外で、壊すと半端なく高額請求されるようです。
高所の影響か、眠くなりますが、寝ると高山病が悪化するので寝るのは厳禁と注意されます。
4000メートルを超えた山頂では3箇所くらい場所を変えて滞在して、最後の場所で1時間くらい日没を待ちます。
日没を待ち下山、途中の駐車場に止まり、星空鑑賞と撮影会を行います。
それもなんだかんだと1時間くらい。
撮影の度に駐車場から出る車や、道路を通る車を待って撮影するので、時間が掛かります。
その間も激寒及び3500メートルくらいの標高。
下りの道の方が暗い中慎重に言っているのか、時間が掛かった感じがしました。
オニヅカセンターを越えて、しばらく行った先でトイレ休憩及び着替え。
ホテルに戻ったら、23時でした。
翌日が早かったので、ちょっと焦りましたが、諦めてゆったり構えてました。
高山病も教えられたとおりに、眠らずに、呼吸を深くで乗り切れました。
まあまあ、大変なツアーではありますが、貴重な経験で楽しかったです。

God’s amazing creativity seen through volcanic activity and celestial bodies. Truly an experience you won’t forget. Maka was the best. Very knowledgeable and friendly. Be forewarned that if you have altitude problems, you may fell icky at the summit. Take it slowly. You’ll fell better when you descend.
