Big Island
I participated in the 1.5-hour plan. My 15-year-old daughter, who is a bit scared and has only experienced about 10 minutes of horseback riding in Japan with an attendant, enjoyed this tour and seemed to gain confidence riding on her own. We were very satisfied with the wonderful scenery of the Kohala Coast, the Hawaiian blue sky and sea spread out before us, and the faint view of Maui Island in the distance.
The entrance can be a bit hard to find by car, so I think it's a good idea to check it on Google Maps while heading there.
The full moon made the starry sky a bit disappointing, but my zodiac sign, Scorpio, was beautifully visible. The guide, Sue, was kind and it was an enjoyable observation event. I would like to participate again.
I rode with a 9-year-old, and it was incredibly exciting. We went through the jungle, climbed up and down, which was quite thrilling (maybe because of my driving?). Ducks followed us at the pond, and we got to do some fishing. The view of the white-capped Pacific Ocean from the cliffs was amazing. Along the way, we saw some rare flowers and tried some fruits; it was a packed two and a half hours. In addition to our group of eight, there were two Western couples, and we had two friendly guides for our party of ten. I highly recommend it.
The relaxed atmosphere was great for my first horseback riding experience. However, the horse only walked slowly, so I felt like I wanted to trot a bit.
At the waterfall along the way, there were also activities like stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). I thought of it just as a snack time, but if I had gone with that in mind, I might have been able to spend a bit more meaningful time there.
It's only in English, but it's okay even if it's broken.
The horses seem to be trained and will walk the course on their own.
There are moderate ups and downs, so it doesn't get boring.
The entrance can be a bit hard to find, so be careful.
You can only get there by rental car or charter tour, but this breathtaking view is a must-see!
My partner and I went on this tour with Aaron. He was a fantastic tour guide, with lots of interesting tidbits about the history of the island and plenty of jokes. He also offered to take plenty of photos of us at all the stops. A huge thank you to him for remaining so cheerful and helpful after such a long day. If it was a long day for us, I can't imagine how long it was for him.
The tour was exactly what's stated in the description. We chose to do the tour in part because we weren't certain how to navigate Volcano National Park, and the tour offered highlights of the Park. After the tour though, I wish we had had more time on the island so we could explore Volcano National Park ourselves. Two hours wasn't nearly enough. If you're lucky (we unfortunately weren't), there will be lava at the Park. But don't worry, the volcanoes on Hawaii won't kill you, but bad tour guide jokes will (thank you for that one Aaron!).
Another highlight was Punalu'u Bake Shop. Try the pineapple malasadas: you won't regret it! I was initally hesitant because I'm not a fan of pineapple not in its raw form/juice, but the pineapple malasada was the best of those we ordered. I wish we got more. The passionfruit (lilikoi) and apple ones were also delicious.
After the bakery, we went to Punalu'u Black Sand Beach. It's absolutely lovely and a nice chance to see the endangered Hawaiian sea turtles up close. It's also very picturesque. Just don't get too close to the waves or you'll get very wet.
We finished the tour with stargazing.
Overall, I highly recommend this tour for anyone who wants a quick, yet interesting and surprisingly thorough, tour of the southern part of the Big Island. If/when we go back, we would book with Wasabi Tours again.
We were the only Japanese participants, and although we didn't understand the content of the conversation, it felt good to be part of an overseas tour.
For lunch, it was labeled as BBQ, but it was a small, cold hamburger that had been prepared in advance. Since this was one of the reasons we chose the tour, I wish they had made adjustments if there were any changes. I don't think the tour was bad, but I felt it was expensive in terms of cost performance.
I have always been interested in horseback riding on the Big Island, but I couldn't find the right timing due to sightseeing at the beach and Kilauea. However, I finally got to try horseback riding.
The weather was excellent that day, especially towards Kohala Ranch, creating perfect conditions. I was a bit worried, but there were Japanese instructions available, so there were no issues at all.
First, the staff provided an explanation, and I learned about the riding posture and how to control the horse. They helped me choose a horse based on my physique, and then I let the horse take the lead. The horses were very well-trained, and I was able to have my first horseback riding experience without any problems. The experience course lasted 1.5 hours, but I ended up riding for about 2 hours.
The majestic nature and stunning scenery were addictive. Reservations were also easy to make before the trip. Thank you for a wonderful time.
There was a young boy among the customers who was scared and crying, but the staff stayed with him, and he was able to ride without any trouble at all.
It was good. It might have been better to have a raincoat since it rained a bit in the mountains. My wife and daughter seemed quite cold.
This was my second experience. Just like the first time, the 2.5-hour tour with the wonderful scenery and unique horses was a very enjoyable time. The guide only speaks English, but they communicate very clearly and understandably. They are very friendly and lovely people. I think it's a rare experience in Japan to be able to participate in such a long course as a beginner in horseback riding. There is an initial explanation on handling the horses, but since the horses are very smart and accustomed to the course, I felt there would be no problem if I left it to them. I would like to visit again.
This was a long tour, about 13 hours, and it was so informative and fun! Our guide Aaron was very safe, smart, and informative during our tour. We had a great time at the coffee plantation, black sands beach, a famous bakery, and at the volcano national park. Dinner was good and so was lunch they provided. We had a great and unforgettable time.
It was a once in a lifetime experience. The manta rays came right up to us and almost brushed up on us. It was so beautiful as well as seeing all the glowing plankton and other fish. the staff on the boat were friendly and informative. at the end they gave us hot chocolate and soup to warm us up. definitely recommend this company.
We had such a fantastic time with our family of 5 on this venture. The views were breathtaking and the horses were so well behaved. They knew what they were doing. The guides were very friendly and gave wonderful direction. My 9 year old son understood everything and all went smoothly. We took the most beautiful pictures up on the mountain and will frame them to remember this experience. Thank you so much.
The fee was over 100,000 yen per person, and I thought it was expensive, but I was relieved when Tosi, the Japanese-speaking pilot, welcomed us. I also took a helicopter ride over Iguazu Falls, which was 28,000 yen for 15 minutes, and this flight was two and a half hours. If we calculate simply, that would be 280,000 yen. In reality, we flew from the Waikoloa heliport to Hilo and had to refuel, which also incurs fuel costs. Above all, the pilot explained everything in Japanese and answered various questions clearly, and the view of the volcanic crater was impressive! The waterfalls in the canyon were also wonderful. I gained a good understanding of how the Big Island was formed, and it was definitely worth it. If you have the time, the course that takes you down to the waterfalls would also be great... Participated on August 22, 2023.
This was the BEST flight I've ever done on Big Island. The doors-off was the way to go. It was a 4-seater with only 3 of us on-board so we each got a window seat.
Tips:
-Bring/wear a windbreaker. It gets VERY chilly with the wind.
-Sunglasses are a must
-Cameras or cell phones for photos must have a wrist strap
The trip was great. Nice being out on the ocean. Catamaran felt safe. Captain and crew were friendly and competent. Lots to drink plus snacks. Always a beautiful sunset. Highly recommended. Would do it again. Mahalo!
I encountered a view that was more wonderful than I had expected, and it was the best. Although the distance was considerable, which is unavoidable, the long drive by car was a bit of a drawback. However, the explanation in Japanese by a second-generation person from Yokosuka was incredibly clear. Since it was a nearly seven-hour tour, I suppose that's to be expected, but the cost... If I can get past that, I would love to go again.
There were about 15 participants, and a guide was at the front and back. The gathering and dispersal felt casual, as we just came to the bay and then left, so I think it's good to come in swimsuits and leave in swimsuits. There were public restrooms nearby. If you have a certain level of English or some canoeing experience, you'll feel more comfortable participating. Also, the light snacks provided were small bags of snacks and about one can of juice. They lent out life jackets for children. The snorkeling masks were one size, so the kids used their own goggles. It was a beautiful bay with very clear blue water, and it was a wonderful half-day tour while feeling the nature of Hawaii. Thank you very much.
I was worried about what would happen due to the unfortunate rain, but when it was time to ride the horses, the rain stopped, and the weather was just right! Since the temperature was a bit low, I wasn't too hot wearing a windbreaker over my short sleeves. All the horses were calm, and my younger child (9) had a great time riding. Along the way, the guide picked guava for us to eat! It was delicious. The guide was very fun, making jokes and giving us polite advice, which was great. The path down to the canyon was incredibly steep, which was a bit nerve-wracking, but the guide's driving was very skilled! At the end, the guide took pictures of each of us!
All the horses were very gentle, and riding in the beautiful, vast ranch was enjoyable. Since the wind is strong, it can get chilly even if it's hot, so I think it's a good idea to borrow a riding jacket and wrap it around your waist. Be sure to let your guide know when you want to put on or take off your jacket or windbreaker, and do this while the guide is holding the horse's reins.
Jackie, our guide, explained how to ride in very clear, slow, and polite English, which was great! Thanks to that, my 15-year-old child was able to enjoy it safely. We rode a somewhat lazy horse (who kept munching on grass), but thanks to Bridget, our guide's advice, we didn't spend all our time eating grass.
It's best to leave valuables in the car. The parking space is just before you can see the reception building. If you're worried about leaving things in the car, you can also have them stored in the reception office.
When we got off the horse, it nuzzled against me, and it was so, so cute! Thank you for a wonderful experience! I want to go again.
The tour guides Vince and Kekoa was awesome! Kekoa was super witty and it mean the tour so fun! Definitely, would recommend this tour 100%
I definitely recommend taking this tour. It’s very well paced so that you’re never stressed out or rushed, but never bored either. I loved learning Hawaiian history and fork lore expertly told by my tour guide Uncle Jim. I would request him if you can. The stops are great and it’s a really nice day trip. Hope you can do this and have fun!
My family and I (two kids 11 and 8 plus my spouse) had a blast on the Spirit of Aloha Kohala Coast Snorkel Tour with Lunch & Drinks - Hawaii Nautical / Snorkel Sail. My only complaint is that I wish it was longer! Our captain was entertaining, the crew knowledgeable, and the facilities were clean. Equipment was sufficient and the waters were clear and calm. I highly recommend!
It was a perfect day! The plantation was BEAUTIFUL and we learned so much about all the native and non-native agricultural while walking to the next platform. Byron and Monique were amazing and had our family laughing the whole time! Totally making everyone feel at ease. The tips they provided ensuring we got the most out of each ”zip”were a huge help and made the adventure just that much more fun. We would do it all again in a heartbeat!
The zip line experience was excellent! Ages 8-45 in our group all loved it!!
We weren’t sure about the waterfall swim/kayak, the kids said this was their favorite part of the time at Umauma, even better than zip lining!!
Highly recommended for people of almost any age!!
Unfortunately, due to the strong winds from the hurricane, the path to the summit was closed on the day of the visit. However, there was a possibility that if negotiations were successful at the Onizuka Center, the path might be opened, so I went to the Onizuka Center. But the result was... it was indeed not possible.
That said, it was good that I was able to get to Onizuka! The tour fee was refunded later for the portion that I couldn't complete to the summit (not the full amount, but $200 out of $400). Well, we can't win against the forces of nature! This will be a lesson for next time!
The crew and view was amazing! You can see A-Bay at its best. Blue waters, sea turtles and beautiful fish. Calm waters and blue skies with shade. Kids will absolutely live this short and safe tour. Bring your swimsuits for afterwards and enjoy the sandy coastline. Plenty of trees, restrooms. The Marriott has a walking trail with fish ponds too! Mahalo, Angel
Aloha Angel
Thanks for taking the time to review your Glass Bottom Boat Cruise. We're so happy to read that you enjoyed the trip and got to spend some time on the beach afterwards. We know there are a lot of activities to choose from when you're on the island and we're honored you chose to spend part of your morning with us.
We really appreciate those beautiful photos you posted too!
Mahalo and A Hui Hou
I was worried about whether I would be able to see manta rays based on the reviews, but I did! They came surprisingly close, almost within reach of my hands and feet, so I had to be careful not to touch them at all. Since ocean accidents are scary, I chose a tour that provides explanations in Japanese. Fortunately, there wasn't much price difference for the manta tour, so I went with this one.
I had read in reviews that the boat ride from the port to the manta point was long, and that some people experienced seasickness or found the rocking of the boat difficult. However, since I have never had severe seasickness in the past, I thought that for those who enjoy being out in the sea breeze and taking in the ocean views (especially during sunset, which I think is a precious experience), a longer boat ride could actually be a lucky thing.
The Japanese tour guide was wonderfully attentive and a lovely person, and I really liked them as a person. The cocoa we had on the boat was also delicious.
What I wish I had brought were two bath towels—one for drying off and one to cover my legs—because while the water was a comfortable temperature in a wetsuit during the hot July weather, it was cold once we got back on the boat. I also recommend bringing a warm jacket or something to wrap around your neck and shoulders, as well as warmer clothes and underwear to change into after swimming, along with socks. It would be best to have a thermos to keep hot tea or something to drink on the way back.
Manta rays are adorable, and I recommend this tour for anyone who loves soothing sea creatures like dolphins. I would like to join this tour again next time.

Mahalo!
After five years of waiting due to the opposition to the observatory expansion and COVID-19, I was finally able to participate in the sunset tour. The company advertised having Japanese-speaking guides, but due to the impact of COVID-19, it seems they laid off most of the Japanese guides because there were many domestic (U.S.) users. During my visit, the guide was an American with experience working at a U.S. military base, and aside from casual conversations near the Onizuka Center and confirming the meeting time, everything was in English. The explanations along the way, including stories about Hawaii's only Army training base, were all in English, but even with my limited English knowledge from middle school to university, I understood about half of it. Of course, the meeting time and important notes were explained in Japanese, but I felt the English explanations were sufficient.
For the stargazing, two vehicles were used in the parking lot between the summit and the center, with only two Japanese participants. We were divided into two groups for English and Japanese explanations, and one person who spoke Japanese provided dedicated explanations. The photos taken during that time, as well as the best photos that the guide had likely taken previously, were received directly through the Aiphone communication feature. Previously, we would receive them later via the website, but with Aiphone, we could do it on the spot by pairing our phones. It seems that those using phones with OS like Samsung might not know how to do this, so I wonder what they do? After returning to the meeting place and dispersing, I was given a ride to a nearby hotel. I was spared a 20-minute walk at night, but this was only because everyone else returned to their cars from the meeting place or were from nearby hotels, so it was just a coincidence that I got a ride. I heard that if Japanese tourists return, Japanese tours might resume.
The tour itself was fantastic, just like everyone else's experience, but I have two final points. The emergency toilet near the summit is very dirty, so it's better not to use it. Let's use the facilities at the Onizuka Center instead, as we will stop there after stargazing, which should take about three hours. Lastly, remember to give a tip when you get off the vehicle. A few years ago, during my first visit (at the time of the "B-class Gourmet Tour"), I completely forgot to tip because it was an all-Japanese tour, and that experience still gives me a bit of trauma. This time, I prepared three levels of tips in my pouch according to my satisfaction and handed them out at the end. If the explanations had been given in both English and Japanese twice, I would have given 20%, but this time I gave about 15%.
The luau show and the buffet-style dinner were both great. The free-flowing Hawaiian cocktails were also a nice touch. The price was a bit high, but it was worth the splurge.
