It's like a jungle! What an amazing first impression. You can slowly enjoy the magnificent nature of Waipi'o while being gently rocked on a horse. It was my first time horseback riding, but the horse was smart and guided me on its own, so I felt safe. It was truly a unique place on the Big Island of Hawaii. That's a sight you have to experience in person. If you want to experience nature and cleanse your spirit, I highly recommend you go!

My 9-year-old daughter is learning horseback riding, and we wanted to let her experience it in nature, so our family of four participated.

On the day of the event, we drove there with a rental car and were able to find the meeting point easily using Google Maps. After signing a liability waiver and a short bathroom break, we set off.

We went down to the valley in a large 4WD vehicle, which was really thrilling and fun! There was a Japanese guide from another tour with us, and it was great to hear the explanations together. The guide talked about the plants around us, but since there were about ten of us in a line, there were times when it was hard to hear the guide's voice. A friendly dog that was close to the horses also joined us, which was very cute.

The ladies at the small souvenir shop at the meeting point were very nice, and we chatted with them a bit. We rode for about an hour and a half, which made our backsides sore, but we also experienced some rain, walked through a river, and it was quite challenging to control the horses as they kept eating grass.

At one point, I got too close to the horse in front of me, and my horse almost bolted, which was a bit scary. If you're worried, it might be a good idea to get travel insurance, as horses are living creatures and anything can happen.

Overall, I think it was a very valuable experience. You can't see that kind of nature in Japan. The children made wonderful memories.

集合場所にある小さいお土産屋さんのおばさん達がとても感じがよくて、色々お話をしました。
全部で1時間半くらい乗馬してるので、お尻が痛くなりましたが、途中、雨も降ったり、川の中を歩いたり、馬たちが草を食べるのでなかなかコントロールが難しかったです。
途中、私は前の馬と近づき過ぎて、私の馬が暴走しそうになり、少しヒヤッとしました。
心配な方は旅行保険に入った方がいいかも知れません。馬は生き物なので、何があるかわかりませんので。
全体にはとても貴重な体験だと思います。日本で、あの大自然は見られません。
子供たちにすてきな思い出ができました

We went to Hawaii to celebrate my parents' 60th birthday. Since we were in Hawaii, I wanted to do something truly Hawaiian, so I signed up for this tour. Neither my parents nor I had any experience with horseback riding, and we were very worried before getting on the horses, but the moment I mounted the horse, all my anxiety disappeared, and I felt excited. For about an hour and a half, we enjoyed a leisurely ride, listening to the sound of the hooves and breathing in the fresh air of nature. My parents said that this horseback riding experience was the highlight of our time on the Big Island.

The tour was conducted entirely in English, so everyone except us were foreign participants. Even if you don't speak any Japanese, the guides communicate in broken Japanese, saying things like "stand" and "danger," so I don't think you need to worry too much.

Also, it takes about 25 minutes to travel from the meeting point to the riding area by wagon. I saw some comments mentioning that the travel time was long, but that's because we slowly descended the steepest slope in the U.S., and the guide explained the scenery we could see from the window, making it not boring at all; in fact, it was fresh, adventurous, and fun!

It was also more affordable than Japanese tours, and I was very satisfied!

ツアー自体は全て英語で行われるため、ぼくたち以外は皆外国人の参加者でした。全く日本語が出来なくても、カタコトの日本語で「立って」や、「あぶない」など言ってくれるので、そんなに心配は要らないと思います。
また、集合場所から馬乗り場まではワゴンで25分ほど移動します。移動時間が長いというコメントもお見かけしましたが、それは全米1の急斜面をゆっくり下るためと、ガイドが車窓から見える景色を説明してくれているからであって、全く退屈せず、むしろ新鮮でアドベンチャラスで楽しかったです！
日本語のツアーよりもお値ごろでしたし、大満足です！！

I couldn't do fast walking or running, so it felt a bit lacking for someone with riding experience. When I asked the staff on site, they told me that if I go towards Kohala, there are spacious fields where I can ride.

This is my second time (the first time I applied directly).
It's difficult to get there on your own, but we go all the way down to Waipi'o Valley.
The horses are well-trained, and you can enjoy horseback riding with a simple lecture.
(They walk on their own without you having to do anything. Haha.)
Since they are living creatures, they stop along the way to eat grass as they please,
and they also take bathroom breaks while walking (which is another memory).
We even crossed a river. It was swollen from the rain a few hours earlier, but the horses moved forward without hesitation.
They also take commemorative photos for you.

Please enjoy the lush green trees, flowers, and horses of Waipi'o.
If you visit the Big Island, I highly recommend it!

This tour provided a great overview of the island. The stops were timed well for bathroom/stretch purposes. We made a couple unscheduled fun stops/detours which was great. Nate had a lot of info to share amd was very knowledgable. Food was very yummy and Nate even found an orchid shopnfor us to eat at while it was pouring outside. Overall great experience.

On December 30, we participated as a family of four. Two of us are children aged 9 and 11.
It was almost our first time riding horses, but the horses were well-trained, so we had no worries.
We took a walk in the valley floor of Waipi'o Valley, swaying on the backs of the horses. It was a place filled with rich water and greenery, exuding tranquility.

For your reference:
- We traveled to and from the valley floor by 4WD from the meeting point. This took quite a bit of time. The approximate schedule was: gather at 1:30 PM, move to the valley floor, start horseback riding at 2:15 PM, finish riding at 3:45 PM, and disperse at the meeting point at 4:15 PM.
- We were the only Japanese participants; everyone else was from the mainland United States.
- We planned to rent a car to get to the meeting point, but when we tried to make a reservation at the hotel after arriving on the Big Island, we were told there were no rental cars available until January 3.
We had no choice but to use a round-trip taxi, which cost over $400 from Kailua-Kona. We should have reserved a rental car from Japan.

仕方なく往復タクシーを使い、カイルア・コナから400ドル強かかりました。
レンタカーは日本から予約して行くべきでした。

The horseback riding in the jungle at the bottom of the valley, which would be very difficult for us to visit on our own, was amazing. The horses were all very gentle and listened well. There were plenty of wild fruits, and we splashed around in the river, making it a unique and enjoyable horseback riding experience.

I participated in the morning session.
If you have a rental car with navigation, you can easily find the reception area.
I attended in November, but it got hot while riding, so water is essential.
If you can't get supplies at a supermarket, I recommend buying water at the shop at the reception area, which also sells it.
(I also recommend using the restroom here.)
You can borrow a helmet, but you can also bring your own hat.

Before riding, the English guide explained the basic movements.
Since it was in English, there were parts I didn't understand, but they explained the important points using some Japanese words as well.
During the ride, there were guides at the front and back of the line to lead the horses, so the horses rarely strayed off the course.
(I almost went off course because I miscommunicated with my horse...)
There were times when the horse didn't respond to the "stop" signal, but the guide stopped us when it was dangerous, so it was fine.

It was fun to take pictures while riding in the great outdoors and to hear explanations about the plants from the guide.
It was quite amusing to see the horse walking through the water.
(I recommend wearing pants that you don't mind getting dirty.)

It was my first time riding a horse, but I was able to do it safely, making it a very good experience.

If you understand English, you would grasp the explanations about handling the horse better, which would reduce any anxiety about riding, and you would also understand the explanations about the plants during the ride more clearly, making it even more interesting.
For those who are anxious, the Japanese plan might be a better option.

乗馬中は列の先頭と最後尾にガイドさんがいて馬を誘導してくれるので、馬がコースを外れることはほぼありませんでした。
(私は馬へのサインを間違えてしまったので外れそうになりましたが。。)
"止まれ"のサインを馬がなかなか聞いてくれないこともありましたが、危ないときはガイドさんが止めてくれたので大丈夫でした。

大自然の中、馬に乗りながら写真を撮ることができたり、ガイドさんから生えている植物の説明を聞けたりして楽しかったです。
水の中をじゃぶじゃぶ馬が歩いていくのもなかなか面白いです。
(汚れてもいいズボンで行くといいですよ)

馬に乗るのは初めてでしたが、無事に乗ることができたのでとてもいい経験になりました。

英語が分かったら、馬の扱いの説明がよく分かるので乗馬への不安がもっと少なくなったと思いますし、乗馬中の植物の説明などもよく分かってもっと面白いだろうなと思います。
不安な方は日本語のプランのほうがいいかもしれません。

The meeting place is at the souvenir shop, which also sells drinks, snacks, and ice cream. You can also use the clean restrooms. However, the helmet smelled, so I wore it over my hat. It was no problem at all not speaking English, and there was plenty of time for horseback riding. I was very satisfied as I could see the waterfall.

Despite the unfortunate weather with light rain, I was initially worried about the tour, but they provided us with rain gear, and the two hours flew by. I enjoyed the mystical Waipi'o Valley horseback riding!

I was happy that the guide chose horses that seemed to match well with each individual. Since I participated with six friends, it became a wonderful memory!

It seems that even the parents, who don't understand English, were able to enjoy horseback riding. We were very satisfied as we rode for quite a long time. We would love to participate again if the opportunity arises.

After the rain, the water level in the river at Waipi'o Valley had increased, and I was a bit worried when crossing the river on horseback, but the guide carefully checked for safe spots and led us cautiously, allowing us to enjoy the experience without any anxiety. It was a pity that the restroom at the meeting point was a portable toilet and not very clean. Other than that, I was very satisfied.

Awana, our guide was absolutely wondetful. He was so courteous, professional and accommodating. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour. I think we best part besides the scenery, was the Hawaii Botanical Garden. It wasn’t user friendly, due to some health conditions, but I thoroughly enjoyed it, and could have spent a lot more time there. Awana got us back to the airport to catch our flight in record time, after a long day.

Waipi'o Valley was a wonderful place with a gentle atmosphere. You can easily reach the viewpoint by car, but the road down to the valley is off-limits for rental cars and is a narrow, bumpy, steep path that is best avoided if you're not experienced. It's advisable to know in advance where to pull over to avoid oncoming vehicles. Very few people walk down, and since there are no markers once you descend, I think it's better to go on a tour rather than trying to navigate on foot.

Initially, the staff will take you by car to the horse stable in the valley. There were 8 participants in the horseback riding tour, accompanied by 2 staff members. The instructions on how to ride were simple, mixed with broken Japanese, but the horses were all very smart and guided us along (laughs). Unlike in Japan, where someone typically leads the horse, each person is given a horse and can ride right away, even if it's their first time. It's so much fun!

When I considered booking beforehand, the Japanese tour was a full day, so I opted for this half-day option instead. Since it's a first experience, it requires quite a bit of stamina, so I think half a day is sufficient.

ワイピオ渓谷は、穏やかな気が流れる素晴らしい場所でした。
上から眺める展望台には車ですぐ行けますが、そこから渓谷に下る道路はレンタカーでは通行禁止ですし、無理に行こうとするのは止めた方が良いガタガタの急勾配の狭い道です。対向の車を避けるのも、あらかじめ避ける場所を把握していた方が良い、慣れた人が行く道です。
歩いて下る人もとても少ないです。下りてからも道しるべなどはないので、ぐるっと巡るとなると、馬ではなく歩くのだとしてもツアーで行った方が良いと思います。

はじめに、スタッフが渓谷の馬小屋まで車で連れて行ってくれます。乗馬ツアーには、8人が参加して2人のスタッフが付きました。

My first horseback riding experience! Even though my English is terrible, I had a great time.

First, they explained how to handle the horse. Of course, it was in English, but they also provided important points in broken Japanese, and with gestures, I was able to understand most of it.

As soon as we mounted, the well-behaved horses moved along, taking breaks by the water and grazing. I enjoyed the negative ions of Waipi'o while learning about taro, noni, and kukui trees!

The view from the observation deck was amazing, but the sight of Hiilawe Falls from below was also magnificent.

We participated as a family. Including my 8-year-old son, it was the first time for everyone except my wife to go horseback riding, and we were a bit anxious, but we were able to enjoy it thanks to the friendly guide who spoke simple English. I would like to join this tour again when we visit the Big Island. As the title suggests, we drove up a steep slope to the riding area and crossed a stream. This was also enjoyable, so you can have double the fun in one experience.

Horseback riding was amazing. The scenery was also fantastic, and it was truly great.

However, both the Wi-Fi router and my phone lost signal, and I panicked because I couldn't load Google Maps to find the meeting point...

It's better to download it in advance.

Also, my daughter, even though she was wearing long pants, seemed to have been bitten by a tick or something, and she bled and swelled badly...

I recommend wearing sturdy jeans or something similar.

景色も最高で本当に良かった。

でも、Wi-Fiルーターも携帯も圏外になり待ち合わせ場所まで、
Google MAPが読み込めず焦った。。。。

事前にダウンロードしておいた方が良い。

We participated as a family of four. There were also two couples, making a total of eight people. I think we were on the horses for just under two hours.

Everything was in English, but the staff was very friendly and explained the history of Waipi'o Valley in a way that was easy to understand.

The weather was nice, and riding horses in nature was very relaxing.

While the service wasn't overly luxurious, they took family photos from various angles, and even when there were delays or the line got mixed up, we were guided smoothly without feeling rushed, allowing us to enjoy the scenery with peace of mind.

The kids were very satisfied, so we would like to participate again.

The cat in the stable was cute.

I participated with my middle school daughter. Both of us lacked sufficient English skills, so there were many parts of the guide's explanations that we couldn't understand. They would answer our questions, but there wasn't much kindness or consideration shown. It was raining quite a bit, and it felt like we were just turning back on the same path, making the journey monotonous. The rain gear they provided was excellent, and we didn't get wet at all in the covered areas. I wonder if it would have felt nice if it had been sunny.

We only had one day on the big island and wanted to see as much as possible. This tour takes you all the way around with multiple, although brief stops and several locations. Could omit the coffee tasting and spend more time on the black beach or at the falls.

Our guide, Keith, was full of history, folk lore and traditional information which was a big bonus.
If you want history and a good whirlwind tour of the island, this tour is for you.
Of note, lunch was provided and this service has its own chef who prepares the meals. Very healthy sampling of the typical fare at area restaurants, however, when it’s served in lieu of a cold sandwich and a picturesque park, it suddenly becomes one of the best meals of the vacation.

I participated in the morning session. It took about an hour and a half from Kona to reach the meeting place. We drove to the stable in the canyon and chose our horses. The instructions were 100% in English, so I had to pick up on the reins and precautions somewhat intuitively (laughs). The horses are well-trained, and the instructors are positioned at the front and back of the line, so I didn't feel particularly anxious. However, some horses would stop to eat grass or drink water and act freely, so I think it's important to take the lead.

By the way, what I found personally helpful to bring was a windbreaker. Depending on the timing (late April), I was caught in a sudden downpour that required an umbrella for about 10 minutes during the ride. I was unsure if it would be a nuisance, but I tied it around my waist and was able to quickly put it on while on the horse to shield myself from the rain, which turned out to be a great decision! They might provide raincoats if it rains from the start, but if it starts raining during the ride, each person will need to handle it on their own! Everyone was using insect repellent spray as well.

The instructors were all kind, explaining plants along the way and taking photos, which made for great memories. It's not often you get the chance to ride through such magnificent nature, and I'm glad I participated. I would love to do it again if I come back to the Big Island. Lastly, after horseback riding, I had a malasada at Tex Drive In near Honokaa, which I also recommend.

コナから1時間半程かかって集合場所に到着。渓谷にある馬屋まで車で移動し馬を選んでもらいます。
説明は100%英語なので手綱操作や注意事項は何となく察する感じで(笑)
馬はよく調教されてますしインストラクターの方が隊列の前後にいるので特に不安は感じませんが、馬によっては止まって草を食べたり水を飲んだり好き勝手に行動するので主導権を握る事が大事だと思います。
　ちなみに個人的に持って行って役立ったのがウインドブレーカーでした。
時期(4月末)によるのかもしれませんが、乗馬の最中に10分程普通に傘がいるレベルの通り雨に降られました。邪魔になるかな？と思いつつ腰に巻いていきましたが馬上でさっと羽織って雨をしのぐことができて大正解でした！
最初から雨の時はカッパをかしてくれる？かもしれませんが、途中で降った場合は各自で対応になります！
後は虫よけスプレーをみんな使っていました。
　インストラクターの方はみんな親切で途中で植物の説明をしてくれたり、写真を撮ってくれていい思い出になりましたし、雄大な自然の中を馬で散歩できる機会なんてそうそうないし参加して良かったです。
またハワイ島に来たらやってみたいです。
最後に、乗馬の後はホノカア近くのテックスドライブインでマラサダを食べましたがこちらもオススメです。
