This time, I participated in the long-awaited Mauna Kea sunset and stargazing tour on the Big Island. There was a paid shuttle service to the hotel where I was staying, and we started from there. We headed from the Kona area to Waikoloa, picking up other guests along the way, aiming for the summit in a 12-passenger bus. Our guide was James. We took a break at the Onizuka Center to acclimatize to the high altitude. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Big Island. It was worth more than the price, and it became an unforgettable experience.

I was worried about how it would be to exceed 4000 meters for the first time. After a short break at the Onizuka Center and lunch, we had an exciting trial. We took photos in various poses as a group with the sunset in the background near the observatory. I felt truly alive on this planet.

A little further down, we saw the starry sky. Luckily, the Milky Way was clearly visible, and we were able to see Saturn through a telescope. Of course, we took photos as well.

The explanations were very helpful, mixed with some Japanese. You can also borrow warm clothing and gloves. The sandwiches for lunch were very delicious.

This was my second time on the Big Island and my first time at Mauna Kea. My mother, who is 68 years old, was worried about altitude sickness, but thanks to our guide Shoutarou, we were able to enjoy the best sunset and starry sky at Mauna Kea without any issues. Thank you, Shoutarou! I had heard that our guide would be a foreigner, but he spoke Japanese fluently, which made me feel very relieved. However, I was disappointed by the manners of some participants in the same tour. Despite seeking more services, they got off the bus without even giving a tip (even though it was confirmed before the tour that the guide's service fee was separate) and hardly said goodbye. As a fellow Japanese person, I felt a bit uneasy about it. That wonderful tour was thanks to our guide.

運転手の方はとても話好きで色々な話が聞けました。とても興味深い話でした。
車の運転ができる方はレンタカーを借りて自分で行ったほうがゆっくりできますが、できない私にはとてもありがたいツアーでした。

Even in summer, it’s cold at the summit, so I recommend putting on your inner layers by the Onizuka Center along the way. They provided rental down jackets and gloves for everyone. Also, headache medicine and motion sickness pills are essential.

夏でも山頂は寒いので、途中のオニヅカセンターまでに、インナーを着込んでおく事をお勧めします。ダウンジャケットや手袋などは、レンタルで全員分用意して下さってました。
また、頭痛薬や酔い止めは必須です。
