Big Island
I expected this trip would be a magical chance to get to stand "on top of the world" and watch the sunset and see the stars. It was indeed spectacular. The stargazing portion was really geared towards people who are absolute astronomy beginners, so if youre an amateur astronomer you'll be a little disappointed that you don't get to see more. But the guides were great the whole time giving a great history of the Big Island ranging from botany to politics to Volcano development. Don't expect a very lively time, if you're there as an individual it's a quiet, lonely world up there. but would be great as an adventurous couple to see something totally out of the ordinary.
This month (January 2013), I participated with my husband.
On the day of the event, I was worried that it might be canceled due to high waves, but we drove to the meeting point with a rental car.
Regarding the waves, there was absolutely no problem. After signing in at the reception, I changed into my swimsuit. I slathered on sunscreen because the Hawaiian sun can be intense.
Once on the Zodiac, they kept asking if I had applied enough sunscreen. The guide had sunscreen available, so it was okay to borrow some there. In fact, I did borrow it. Thank you!
As we left the harbor, we were waved off by a sea turtle floating in the harbor.
Bouncing along, we quickly encountered a pod of dolphins. They are said to be the second largest species of dolphin, and I thought they were small whales.
The guide shared various information about the fish and islands, but due to the wind noise and my limited English, I understood very little. However, he was a nice guy.
Now, getting back on track, we headed south from the harbor towards the Sheraton, and the snorkeling took place in Kealakekua Bay, which is not affected by swells.
It was almost my first time snorkeling, but they provided something like a float, and since it was close to the shore and the boat, and the guide was watching over us, I felt safe and wasn't scared at all. I was very satisfied to see colorful tropical fish hiding among the corals up close. The sea urchins were super big.
When we got hungry, we were given sandwiches, snacks, and juice. It was all gone in no time.
On the way back, we encountered not only dolphins but also whales. They came quite close, within a few dozen meters, and everyone was super excited.
The boat was going really fast, so on the way there, I was tense, clinging to the rope and my husband to avoid falling off, but on the way back, I discovered how to brace myself and was able to relax quite a bit.
In the end, I gave a tip to the guide who took care of us, but many people didn't give one, so it's really up to you. It's the thought that counts.
Since I get cold easily, I used a towel and a hoodie to shield myself from the wind during the ride. Also, for those concerned about sunburn, you might need to hold your hat down with your hand to prevent it from blowing away, so having a hat might be a good idea.
Last time I participated in the summer, and since the constellations visible change with the seasons, this time I went in winter when my constellation is visible.
Every time I joined during the new moon according to the lunar calendar, I was amazed by the starry sky, but this time I couldn't adjust my schedule, so I ended up going close to the full moon and had low expectations. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how many stars I could see.
Additionally, the weather was absolutely perfect, allowing us to see the red lava lake of Kilauea from the summit.
I also love that I can take a lot of photos each time, and they upload the images on their website.
I think the tour itself is very interesting, but there is a language barrier...
I would recommend it to those who can speak English, but I feel it might be tough for those who cannot. However, it seems that there is a good chance of encountering dolphins and whales.
If you can speak English, definitely give it a try!
My husband and I went on this trip as a wedding present from my brother on our honeymoon and we had a blast! It was great to be able to be in a kayak together. The places we saw, and the stories we were told were awesome. There was even a surprise cliff jump! It's a great way to see a beautiful side to the Big Island!
When you arrive in Hawaii, you might have the image of being welcomed with a lei, but recently that has become less common, so I signed up for this service as a surprise. They were very happy, so I think it was a great start to the trip. The price is a bit on the higher side, but the staff's response was good. You don't need to speak English to be okay.
Our guide provided a trip filled with interesting history, fun facts, and a great stargazing discussion! Probably the best activity we did on our Big Island vacation.
We've done this trip a few time, and it's always great. The food is good. Staff is Great. Boat is still tip top. Had some high surf that limited where we could go, and we had to deal with some of the new regulations by Capt Cook Monument, but the staff was on top of it, and we didn't miss a beat. Well worth it.
Excellent crew, clear water, lots of fish.... Great fun!
I went to Hawaii for my honeymoon and participated in the Mauna Kea Sunset & Stargazing Tour.
Before reaching the summit, we saw a beautiful rainbow and took some photos there. It was a fun journey even before we got to the top, taking pictures on the lava!
Then, we observed the sunset near the summit.
It was truly beautiful!! The sunset reflecting off the clouds was also very stunning.
As for the cold, it was indeed cold. I made sure to wear warm clothing, but they also lent us ski pants, jackets, hats, and gloves, which was very appreciated.
During the stargazing, I was amazed by how many stars there were, thinking, "Are there really this many stars?!" It was incredibly beautiful.
Our guide, Mr. Yamamoto, was very interesting and knowledgeable about the Big Island and the stars, making it a wonderful tour! He even taught us how to take photos of the night sky with our own cameras, and we were able to capture some really beautiful pictures!
This time, I couldn't see my constellation because it wasn't the right season, so I want to try again at a different time!
Words can't fully express this experience, so if you ever have the chance to go to the Big Island, I highly recommend participating in this tour!!
Lastly, thank you to our guide Mr. Yamamoto and everyone who joined the tour with us!☆
This might be what a hotel luau is like... Previously, I attended a luau on Maui that was really great, so this might be a gap in comparison... The difference is that the entertainment, like the hula dance, was lacking. I was expecting something more dynamic. The food wasn't bad, but it was just okay. There were few drink options. Maybe Kinkame is in a small space.
Dear Peace,
We sincerely apologize for not meeting your expectations during your time in Hawaii. Our luau show is generally well-regarded for its highlights, but we appreciate your feedback and will consider it as an important point for improvement. We would be delighted to have another opportunity to help you create wonderful memories on the Big Island.
With our apologies and best wishes,
I participated in the monitor campaign with Aran1 and boarded the Zodiac. The tour was a 5-hour trip with a lunch included, departing at 10 AM. We took a taxi from our hotel in Kona to the meeting point at Honokohau Harbor and arrived without any trouble. Besides the two of us, there were no other Japanese participants, and the group was quite international, with members from various countries visiting for tourism. Therefore, all the procedures and interactions during the boarding were in English. However, I don't think those who are not confident in English will have too much trouble, as difficult English is hardly necessary. Additionally, they provided supplementary materials in Japanese during the initial procedures, so I think you'll have a general understanding of what is being said.
At first glance, the boat surprised me as it was just a rubber boat. It was my first experience with rafting, and I was excited to see what ocean rafting would be like, but it was even more intense than I expected, racing across the sea with great excitement. You can experience thrills like a roller coaster, hitting waves and falling off them. However, this rubber boat is said to be military-grade, so it was very stable.
While it's easy to focus on the rafting part, the basics are also well covered. First, we snorkeled in Kealakekua Bay, where Captain Cook's monument is located! Just a little below the surface, there was a beautiful expanse of coral reefs and tropical fish. The water clarity was excellent, probably around 25 meters. Since it was January, the water temperature felt a bit chilly, but the foreigners didn't seem to mind the cold too much. However, once you get back on the boat from the sea, the sun's rays are very strong, making it quite warm. In fact, it's so strong that if you don't apply enough sunscreen, you could get burned. The lunch after snorkeling was a sandwich, and it was delicious.
On the way back, they explained various spots along the west coast of the Big Island. We were also fortunate enough to see schools of whales and dolphins during the rafting, which was a bonus. This tour is not just about going snorkeling; the boat ride itself is an attraction, making it a two-in-one experience. I had a great time. However, there is no restroom on the boat, so I think it would be a challenge if you don't take care of that before boarding. If you want to enjoy snorkeling at a leisurely pace, it might be better to take a larger boat.
I went to the port without knowing much about the Zodiac boat, and it turned out to be just a black rubber boat with an engine. I was surprised that 18 people would fit on it! Since Hawaii Island is a small island floating in the Pacific, the waves were very high, and I felt a bit anxious about whether we could really go out on this. The cheerful captain revved the engine, lifted the Zodiac onto the sea, and made it glide over the waves. The speed was just like a jet ski. We could tilt the boat and turn just like surfing. Being lightweight, it could do anything! It felt like we were on a pirate ship. Sitting on the edge of the boat, we genuinely flew over the waves like flying fish!
We snorkeled near Captain Cook's monument. The water was really cold!! But it was so clear, and we enjoyed seeing beautiful tropical fish. While diving, I heard popping sounds, as if dolphins were communicating or something. After enjoying snorkeling for a while, we got cold and were the first to get out of the water, but the foreigners swam for over 10 minutes longer without any problem. The lunch on the boat after snorkeling was delicious. Then, the captain took us to a spot where we could see dolphins. I was moved, but after seeing the dolphins swim quickly, I felt exhausted just watching from the Zodiac. I was really glad to be back on land.
You can get the instructions in Japanese, but the language is in English. I didn’t feel like reading the instructions on the boat, so it’s definitely more fun if you understand English. You can really enjoy the cheerful activities with the foreigners.
An awesome way to spend Christmas Morning! This was part of many firsts for our family: our first trip to Hawaii, first time kayaking in the ocean, first time snorkeling, .... We had a wonderful time. My husband and I shared a Kayak and our son had his own. All of us had a wonderful time. My husband and son even jumped off the cliff! My only disappointment was I wish I had some photos of us during the experience.
I thought it would be colder, but the weather was warm and very comfortable on the day.
The view from the top of the 4,200m mountain was amazing at sunset! It felt like being on top of the snow.
And the starry sky was incredible!
I could see the Milky Way, and I was very satisfied!!
I want to go again~ (*^_^*)
We signed up with my parents, who are celebrating their 60th birthday, and my husband and I, making a group of four. First of all, we were very satisfied with the guide's attentive work and witty explanations of the starry sky, and surprisingly (was that rude?) the bento was delicious.
Since we drove to a place higher than Mount Fuji, I was careful to practice abdominal breathing as instructed to avoid altitude sickness (I experienced drowsiness and a slight headache due to lack of oxygen). However, once we reached the summit, the sunset viewed from a rocky world that felt like another realm made all drowsiness and headaches disappear. The starry sky observation from a little below the summit, accompanied by the guide's humorous commentary, made us forget the cold.
Each participant took turns having their photos taken against the backdrop of the starry sky, and the service to download those photos for free from the blog on the website was incredibly moving, as it was something we couldn't do ourselves. The photo taken with Orion and the Winter Triangle in the background is a wonderful memory for our family. Thank you very much!!
I was expecting a traditional hula dance show for my first time, but it turned out to be a well-produced performance.
Thank you for choosing Island Breeze Luau for your first luau show. It is a great honor.
I hope you were satisfied.
We would be delighted to welcome you again when you visit the Big Island.
With Aloha.
Aloha
We participated in the morning plan on February 2, 2012, and all three of us were very satisfied!! I've been to Hawaii about ten times, but since coming to the Big Island, I've fallen in love with this place and have been coming here for four consecutive years. I usually stay at a condominium in Waikoloa, but this time we also spent two nights in Hilo and were satisfied after seeing the red flames of Kilauea at night before returning to our "home" in Waikoloa.
I usually play around snorkeling in the nearby sea. I was interested in this tour and wanted to go, but I thought it wouldn't be right to go alone while leaving my wife and grandmother behind. However, I reconsidered because:
1. The boat is large and stable.
2. It has clean restrooms.
3. Breakfast, lunch, drinks, and fruit are included.
With these conditions, my grandmother could just enjoy watching from the boat.
I was deeply moved and impressed after participating for the first time. My English is limited to what I learned in middle school, so I was worried. Luckily, there was a young Japanese sister on board, and I asked her to help me if I didn't understand something, but I managed to get by on my own.
Along the way, we saw whales, and just before we arrived at our destination, we were welcomed by a pod of dolphins. The staff and crew were enthusiastic and cool, and their commitment to ensuring each guest had a great time was palpable.
The sea was clear, with coral reefs and schools of tropical fish. Most of the guests seemed to be Americans, and everyone, young and old, was lively and friendly. There was no need for words...
Honestly, I wish I understood more English. The beautiful and clean boat eased my grandmother's initial worries, and she even asked, "When are we going again?"
Even without getting in the water, she enjoyed watching everyone play in the beautifully clear coral reef from the boat. The staff filmed the experience, so I quickly purchased the video and watch it from time to time.
My younger brother, who was watching it with me, is retiring this year, and he wants us all to go together as a celebration, so we’ve already made a reservation for February 14, 2013. I’m looking forward to it!
Whether in winter or summer, the water is nice, but it can be cold when you get back on the boat, so I need to remember to bring a large towel or a yacht parka.
The most important thing is to "have fun together." Among the things to bring for this tour, it mentions bringing sunglasses and also an "adventurous spirit." I really love this feeling.
I can't wait to go again!

We participated as a family of eight. With four people over 60 years old, including the oldest at 73, I was worried about whether we could handle climbing a mountain higher than Mount Fuji at 4,200 meters. I thought it would be a more challenging tour, but they provided breaks for altitude adjustment, and everyone was in great shape.
In Kona, the temperature was 20 degrees, while at the summit of Mauna Kea, it was minus 2 degrees, so there was a 22-degree temperature difference. However, the cold weather gear they lent us was perfect.
At the summit of 4,200 meters, watching the sunset was incredibly moving and exciting for everyone. By the time we descended the mountain after the sun had set, it was pitch dark, but we stopped to enjoy the starry sky, which was also incredibly moving and exciting. The sky was filled with stars. It was amazing. Everyone was satisfied with this tour. However, it would be even better if the price were a little lower.
、
It was truly the best tour. As a repeat participant, I definitely want to join again next time. The weather may affect it, but that's part of the experience. I believe the encounters with fellow participants and the coordinator are also valuable travel experiences. If you're going to the Big Island, this tour is highly recommended.
At 4,000 meters, the clarity of the dry air seems different. I went in early December, and the starry sky was magnificent. The path from the Onizuka Visitor Center to the summit was unpaved, and I was a bit surprised by the steep incline, but the 12-passenger four-wheel-drive van climbed strongly despite being full. It was indeed cold at the summit. It seems impossible without warm clothing, which they lent us for stargazing and other activities.
The dinner bento at the Onizuka Visitor Center, which came with miso soup, was a comforting taste of Japanese food after a long time. It was a nice break.
It was a great experience to be able to drive to a place higher than Mount Fuji.
I recommend this for those visiting Hawaii Island for the first time. They provided detailed explanations about various information regarding Hawaii Island, and I was able to understand it well.
Since it was just the two of us on the day, we were able to go at our own pace, and the staff was always attentive, making it a very enjoyable tour. The snorkeling had great visibility and there were lots of corals!! They took many photos for us and sent them via email later. We returned to the port before 9 AM, and then we went to Hilo. We made effective use of our time, and it turned out to be a very fulfilling day.
I participated on December 16th. It was my first time, and I was nervous, but both the captain and Daisuke were very friendly, so my nerves quickly disappeared.
We were blessed with good weather and encountered a pod of dolphins, and I was able to swim among them and even hear their voices, which was incredibly moving.
I would love to participate again if I have the chance. This is a highly recommended tour.
I had a great time seeing dolphins and various other sea creatures! The staff's response was wonderful, and I was able to enjoy myself with peace of mind. I booked a shuttle service, and it was nice to have someone who spoke Japanese and shared many stories with me! I want to swim with dolphins again the next time I visit the Big Island!
I was honestly nervous because I'm not a good swimmer, but when the dolphins appeared, all of that disappeared. I forgot my fear of the water and found myself swimming smoothly towards the dolphins, which surprised me.
Just hearing their voices is soothing, but having wild dolphins come close to me was truly moving.
Since we were in an area with dolphins, there were some waves, but I felt completely fine because we had a guide with us, and I could swim with a float between my arms. Plus, I got to hear fun stories about dolphins and the ocean, which made me very satisfied.
By chance, on the day I went, I saw three manta rays, and the weather was nice enough to see all the way to Maui, and even Mauna Kea. A miracle happened when a whale appeared, and I got to see its tail perfectly. The excitement on the boat was through the roof, and I was able to create unforgettable memories.
Thank you so much for such a wonderful experience.
We raced across the water at high speed on a jet boat. Along the way, we were able to see whales and dolphins. It was a very satisfying tour that allowed us to truly experience the great nature of Hawaii Island.
We participated as a family, but since I'm not good at English and the show progressed quickly, I couldn't understand it well. I think it would be enjoyable if you are okay with English. It felt different from the shows in Guam and Saipan.
Dear Denden,
I am very sorry that you felt a language barrier. Although this will be in English, our dancers and MC always hope to overcome the language barrier through dance and heart. We will cherish this as an important challenge we want to overcome.
I understand that you came with your family. While there may be changes from day to day, sometimes the musician is the father, the dancer is the daughter, and the receptionist is the mother. We also want to strive to create wonderful memories for your family in Hawaii again.
Had a wonderful time. Boat was exceptional and specifically built for tour. Staff was extremely knowledgeable really great with the children as she used to be a school teacher. You couldn't have asked for a better guide for families with children!
I participated with my wife and daughter. Actually, the day before, we went to Kilauea Volcano and stargazing, but unfortunately, the weather was not good, and we were disappointed that we couldn't see the volcano or the stars. However, Mauna Kea had great weather, starting with an impressive sunset, and we were able to see a sky full of stars, including the Milky Way. Additionally, I was lucky enough to see a shooting star, which made my wife envious.
As advice for everyone participating, dinner is served around 3 PM, which is quite early, so it's better to have an early lunch or eat a small amount. (Don't expect much from the bento...) Also, there is time to acclimatize to the high altitude at the Onizuka Center, but once you reach the summit, you may experience headaches, palpitations from just a little movement, and dizziness, so be careful. Furthermore, it gets quite cold in winter, so I think it's a good idea to prepare hand warmers and tights. Masashi's tour provided pants, which was helpful. They mentioned that only Masashi's tour offers pants. In any case, I think this is a tour that everyone should definitely experience when visiting the Big Island.
