The sunset was beautiful♪ There was snow too♪ But it was incredibly cold~
The sand was blowing up, making my ears and mouth gritty!
It was so windy that we had to stick together, or we felt like we would be blown away, and our faces hurt!
Oh, and the lid of the bento (with tonkatsu, yakisoba, and rice) flew off, and the miso soup got cold quickly if you didn't drink it fast! Since dinner is early, it's better to prepare something to eat when you get back! By the time we returned, room service had already ended, and we ended up getting two sandwich boxes (clubhouse sandwiches) for free from the hotel staff (which was a lifesaver).
And they were delicious.
I tried raw cauliflower and broccoli for the first time!
As a thank you, I gave them a Japanese hand towel.
I saw the silver sword grass. (So happy)
Stargazing wasn't cold at all.
It was breathtaking♪
I even spotted the movement of satellites with the naked eye!
The Milky Way, Saturn's rings, and a sky full of stars★☆
You should definitely go and see it at least once!

I participated on April 11th. Initially, I had signed up for the 10th, but upon checking, I found out it was the day after the full moon. When I contacted the tour company, they informed me that the stars would be more beautiful on the 11th, so they changed my reservation.
Fortunately, on the 10th, there was snow, and the roads were closed, resulting in the tour being canceled. When we gathered on the 11th, we were still told that the roads were closed and we might not be able to reach the summit, but we received word that they had reopened partway, and the weather was improving. The summit was completely white from the previous day's snow, and there were people snowboarding.
During the sunset, the staff mentioned that it had been a long time since they had seen such a beautiful view, and it truly was stunning and moving. It was extremely cold, though... After the sunset, we had stargazing. We saw shooting stars, the Milky Way, and many stars I had never seen before. They provided detailed explanations about the stars, making it a fulfilling tour.
I had seen Mauna Kea on TV several times and always wanted to go. Depending on the weather, the sunset and stargazing might not be visible, but when I went, it was said to be as beautiful as it could get, so I was really glad to have fulfilled my wish.

It was a trip from January 19 to 26, 2009, for a couple aged 119. This was our fourth time in Hawaii, but it was our first time on the Big Island. I wanted to go to Kota Kinabalu, but this time we completely followed my wife's wishes to go via the Big Island to Oahu, which included her desire to participate in stargazing at Mauna Kea and whale watching off the coast of Honolulu. I wasn't particularly interested in stargazing, but I went along with my wife's plans this time. Since we were going from a tropical climate to the summit of Mauna Kea at 4,200 meters with sub-zero temperatures, we needed to prepare as if we were going on a winter trip to Hokkaido. However, seeing the sunset at the summit and then the starry sky after it got completely dark was truly amazing! It felt like someone had opened countless pinholes in the sky and was shining lights from outside. I saw the Milky Way clearly for the first time in my life. Using a large telescope for pinpoint observations and the staff's easy-to-understand explanations made me feel like a temporary astronomy expert. You really realize that Earth is part of the universe. While warm clothing is provided, some preparation on your part is also necessary, so I had more luggage than on previous trips to Hawaii, but it was definitely worth it. Next time, I plan to go around June to immerse myself in a different summer night sky.

There was quite a bit of wind since we arrived on the Big Island. On the day of the tour, there were strong winds as well. The weather was wonderful, with clear skies and we could see the full view of Mauna Loa, but we couldn't reach the summit due to the strong winds! While watching the sunset and feeling a bit envious of the snowy summit visible in front of us, I resolved to come back for the amazing sunset! The starry sky is the second best after the Himalayas. The reason it's second is because the car lights interrupted the view. But thanks to the car, it’s easy to come back, so maybe it’s the best after all! They provided us with warm clothing, which was more comprehensive than other tours. At the Onizuka Center, it was about 10°C, but it felt quite cold due to the wind, so having a hat, gloves, and scarf is essential for warmth. To enjoy the starry sky for a long time, warm clothing is a must!
Although we couldn't reach the summit, I was very satisfied! I was also a bit happy to receive a refund of 15 for not being able to go to the summit! I will definitely go again!

This is my second time coming to the Big Island. Last September, I was completely captivated by Hawaii, and now I'm back just three months later. This time, I’m determined to challenge Mauna Kea, which I couldn't visit on a day trip before! So, I arranged it for the second day of my arrival on December 15.
Since we left at noon, I was glad to have a leisurely morning. I was worried because there were many clouds, but mountain weather can change quickly, so I prayed for good conditions at the summit as we set off.
Our guide, who spoke in Kansai dialect, instantly transported me back to Japan with his lively chatter. The road was bumpy, especially on Saddle Road, which you can't reach by rental car.
We took a couple of breaks along the way, and as the temperature gradually dropped, I layered my clothes to acclimate to the increasing altitude. At the Onizuka Center, the traditional Japanese bento was quite delicious, and the miso soup warmed me up nicely. I also got to see the silversword plant.
We climbed through the clouds we could see from the ground and finally arrived at the summit, where various observatories from different countries are located. I borrowed some warm clothing. The temperature that day was around 1 degree Celsius. There was no wind, so it felt relatively warm for this time of year. However, if you go in with a Hawaiian mindset, it’s still quite cold. Surprisingly, I managed better than I expected, but I didn’t know about the gloves and missed the chance to borrow them, so my hands were freezing!
Just before sunset, I was able to witness a beautiful sunset as the sea of clouds below gradually turned orange. After the sunset, it changed to a rosy hue, and as it got darker, we descended a bit to the stargazing point. The starry sky was pitch black, and the temperature felt even colder. Perhaps due to the high altitude, my footing felt a bit unsteady, and my thinking was slowing down. There were a few clouds, but from the spots where the clouds cleared, we were carefully shown the constellations. I couldn’t remember half of what I saw with the laser pointer and telescope, but I was moved by the Andromeda Galaxy. The clouds gradually cleared, and at one point, I even saw the Milky Way.
After that, we just headed back. As we got closer to the ground, it started to warm up, and by the time we reached Kailua-Kona, it was hot. I really felt how amazing the Big Island is. I conquered the highest elevation of 4,205 meters (and did it easily by van), and in Japan...

This time, when I finally had the chance to go to the Big Island of Hawaii, I wanted to see the stars from Mauna Kea. I searched online and decided on Masashi Nature School. The testimonials were the deciding factor.
"Yamachan" is the best!!
I happened to be with someone who was on their fourth tour with this group, and they are a huge fan of "Yamachan." The guidance during the car ride was excellent, and the explanations during the stargazing were very easy to understand. The weather was perfectly clear and windless... (self-proclaimed: sunny woman).
The contrast until it became pitch black was worth seeing. I felt the universe and returned home with renewed energy.

On the day of the tour, it was unfortunately cloudy, and I was really worried about whether we would be able to see the sunset and stars. However, at the mountaintop above the clouds, I witnessed a breathtaking sunset like nothing I had ever seen before. The view of the sun sinking into the clouds was beyond words in terms of emotion. The stars were not very visible due to the clouds and moonlight, which were less than 10% clear, but I was thrilled to see Venus, Jupiter, and even an artificial satellite. When viewed through a telescope, I could clearly see Jupiter's moons.
The journey was enjoyable thanks to our guide, Minosan's, skillful talk. Additionally, the bento I had at the Omiduka Visitor Center was surprisingly delicious. If you visit the Big Island, I highly recommend this experience.

Thanks to the knowledge I gained about avoiding altitude sickness, I, who am prone to it, was completely fine.
The colors of the sky during sunset are completely different from what you see on the ground! It was truly beautiful and moving.
Then we went on a star tour. I was amazed at how many stars and satellites you can see! They explained the constellations using a laser. I thought I might have enjoyed it even more if I had studied a bit about the constellations beforehand.
It gets very cold, so they lend you warm clothing. That’s usually enough, but since I get cold easily, I wore Heattech, socks, and gloves, and made some preparations. I also brought a hot pack for extra comfort.
I recommend booking a time when you can see your own constellation! It’s truly moving.

The tour to the summit of Mauna Kea was a battle against the cold, sleepiness, and feeling unwell. However, the views above the clouds, the sunset over the clouds, and the Subaru Telescope, which Japan takes pride in, are all worth seeing. My son, who is 12 years old, participated, but it seems that children have weaker vestibular systems, and he struggled quite a bit at the summit. I hope he can join again when he's a bit older. The starry sky was incredibly beautiful, and every time I go to the Big Island, I'm reminded of how much light there is in the sky back in Japan.

Seeing the constellations from a location closer to the stars than other tours felt like we were monopolizing the entire night sky. The explanation of the constellations using a green laser was easy to understand, and the humorous guidance from Minoyan and Shinya was fantastic.
The miso soup we had during the journey, at a high altitude when our bodies started to cool down, was a truly warming dish.

The sunset sinking into the sea of clouds. Above the sea of clouds, the peaks of Haleakalā on Maui and Mauna Loa on the Big Island rise, with various observatories lined up before me. I was breathless at the breathtaking view that cannot be seen in Japan. I was once again impressed that you can drive to such heights; the gentle ridgeline of Mauna Kea is remarkable. After sunset, I saw a sky full of stars from an altitude of 3,600 meters. It was a new moon, and it felt like the stars were about to fall. I thoroughly enjoyed the summer constellations. The temperature was 2 degrees, and the wind chill was probably below freezing, which completely changed my image of Hawaii. Thanks to the skillful storytelling of our tour guide Shinya, I was never bored in the car, didn't fall asleep and suffer from altitude sickness, and it became a memorable tour.

This was my second time going on a tour of Mauna Kea. Last time, I participated in a tour with a different company, but this time I chose Masashi's tour. Thank you very much.
What I thought was the best part of Masashi's tour was the cold weather gear.
I tend to get very cold, so even though I wanted to watch the sunset outside for a long time, I ended up going back to the car relatively quickly last time because of the cold. However, the cold weather gear from Masashi's company was a full-body suit (though it seems there are limited quantities), and it was really warm! I also borrowed gloves. Thanks to that, I was able to stand outside for a long time.
Stargazing is really cold. My toes got very cold. Even with this cold weather gear, my feet and neck were exposed, so I recommend bringing thick socks and a scarf for those who are sensitive to the cold.
The ride to and from the site was not cramped; there was plenty of space, and it was comfortable.
The meal included Japanese food and miso soup without any ingredients. They also provided water later on. The miso soup cooled down quickly, possibly because of the cold, but having a warm drink was very nice. I was also happy that I could help myself to cocoa and tea after the meal.
Since dinner was early, I got a bit hungry when I got home, so it's a good idea to prepare a late-night snack in advance.

At 4,200 meters, the air is clear, and the sun, sinking into the sea of clouds as a fireball, paints the sky in hues of yellow, red, and purple, leaving one speechless at its beauty.
Soon after the sunset, an astronomical show begins with countless stars. While you can see an unimaginable number of stars in the mountains of Japan, at the summit of Mauna Kea, you can witness an overwhelming display of stars and shooting stars. It feels as if you are bursting into outer space.
The temperature is quite cold (probably around 2-3°C), so be sure not to participate in shorts and a short-sleeved shirt. While you can borrow warm clothing, if you want to enjoy star watching comfortably, it's advisable to bring gloves as well. You will be outside for about three hours from sunset until the end of star watching. Some people stayed in their cars due to the cold, looking quite regretful.
The guide talk by the enthusiastic mountain guide from the nature school is entertaining. He seems to know everything about the Big Island, so asking him various questions can help expand your travel possibilities and plan your stay on the Big Island.

Since I saw it on TV before, I had been thinking about going to Mauna Kea to see the sunset... It was a wonderful sunset that I had longed for. Unfortunately, there was a full moon for stargazing, but still, I saw many stars and learned a lot! I even spotted a shooting star! The photo of the moon taken through the telescope became a wonderful memory! Thank you, Shinya.

This trip to Hawaii was a honeymoon, and it was an experience that far exceeded my expectations, leaving me very satisfied.
First of all, our guide, Mr. Yamamoto, was incredibly entertaining, and we had a great time chatting and making detours along the way. As we approached the summit, the temperature gradually dropped, and we enjoyed a bento dinner at the Onizuka Center, where miso soup was also provided, warming both our hearts and bodies.
The view of the sunset from the summit changed moment by moment, and it was truly beautiful. Furthermore, during the stargazing, I was amazed by the countless stars shining brightly! The night sky felt almost white with the starlight. It was such a dreamlike scene that I really regretted not being able to capture it in photos. Additionally, Mr. Yamamoto provided clear explanations of the constellations, which was very educational.
Depending on the season, I highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting the Big Island.

I participated with some skepticism, but I'm really glad I did. I've never seen a starry sky like that. It just happened to coincide with the new moon, so I was able to see many stars, including the Southern Cross! I didn't get altitude sickness and had a great time. I understand now why everyone recommends this tour. I can definitely recommend it!

The weather was wonderful, and we had a truly spectacular sunset and starry sky. I also made friends with others who participated, and we ended up having dinner together later on Oahu, which was a great encounter. I'm really glad I joined this tour.
This was my second time on this tour, but the starry sky changes with the seasons, so I recommend participating several times throughout the year!

I participated on June 21.
It was absolutely amazing! To be specific about what was great:
1. The journey
As we made our way to the summit, we picked up guests while touring around the hotel, and the scenery along with the guide's commentary kept us engaged. We stopped at beautiful spots along the way to take photos.
2. Japanese cuisine
You might wonder why we had Japanese food for dinner while abroad, but once you taste it on-site, you'll understand. The miso soup enjoyed in that magnificent scenery and cold weather is exceptional!
3. The scenery
It can't be conveyed through photos. It's simply incredible. I was left speechless beyond that word. It's something I want my loved ones to see.
4. The starry sky
Even as someone who is used to seeing stars living in the countryside, I was moved by its beauty. I could see satellites and the Milky Way. I also spotted several shooting stars. They showed us Saturn's rings and Jupiter's stripes through a telescope. The guide's extensive knowledge and enjoyable explanations enhanced the experience.
5. Warm clothing
I believe it was warmer than the cold-weather gear from other companies that were also at the summit.
6. The guide
Their knowledge, personality, and reliability were all top-notch. I will definitely return!

On June 6, 2008, I participated with four colleagues from work! When we saw the sunset, it was super cold! I thought, "Is this really Hawaii???" but they lent us jumpsuits, so we managed to get through it. (Personally, I think I should have worn more layers underneath...) After that, we went down a bit from the summit to see the starry sky, and it was just a sky full of stars☆★ They used a laser pointer to explain everything clearly. I saw the Milky Way for the first time and the Southern Cross! It was an overwhelming experience. Furthermore, our guide, Shinya, seemed to have a hobby for photography and took pictures of us with the stars in the background. This will be a treasure for a lifetime. Thank you so much!!
I truly believe it was the right choice to select this tour company! If I come back to the Big Island, I would love to join this tour again!! MAHALO!!

This is the most amazing / moving / breathtaking / spectacular tour I've ever taken in my life... Growing up in a city, I've never seen a night sky like that before... i thought i was seeing a cloud, but turned out to be the Milky Way... there were literally millions of stars in the sky... made me feel that we are a part of this vast galaxy...
the drive to Mauna Kea was fun... Pat, the guide, even stopped our vehicle to see the owl by the road... I even got to see the state bird, Nene, at the Onizuka Space Center...
Mauna Kea is such a spritual place, and I will never forget the sunset.. Oh, you have to take a tour to go up to the summit since you need a permit... it's not like Haleakala on Maui where everyone can go..
Do this tour if you are going to be in the Big Island... I recommend everyone to do this tour... Just amazing!!!

This was my third time participating in the tour, and I enjoyed it every time with new discoveries! The conversations during the car ride were lively, and it was great to see everyone getting along in such a friendly atmosphere.
When we watched the sunset, a very cold wind was blowing, but I was really happy to be lent a warm long coat and a jumpsuit (which can withstand minus temperatures).
During the stargazing, I was able to see my birth constellation, and the thrill of looking at the moon through the telescope was breathtaking! I hope to see shooting stars next time. I would like to come back when we can see "Subaru."
Thank you to our guide, Shinya, for the fun tour and for taking beautiful photos. I would love to join Shinya's tour again. I look forward to it!
