It was great that our driver and tour guide, Kouki, explained everything in both Japanese and English. At the visitor center, it was unexpected that we might not be able to reach the summit due to the fog, but I was happy that we were able to pass through safely.

The sunset view from the summit was incredibly beautiful, and it was moving to witness the moment the sun went down. After descending a bit from the summit, we enjoyed stargazing. The sky was a mix of clouds and clear patches, but the starry sky when there were no clouds was stunning. The guide also explained the constellations, allowing us to have a fulfilling time.

Lastly, sharing the photos taken at the summit with the sunset and the ones with the starry sky in the background (which the guide took with a proper camera) became wonderful memories of this trip!

ドライバー兼ツアーガイドのコウキさんが日本語と英語で説明をしてくださったのが良かったです。ビジターセンターのところで、霧のせいで道の先が見えなくて山頂に行けないかもってなっちゃったのは想定外でしたが、無事に通過することができ、嬉しかったです。

It was great that we learned about telescopes while making many unexpected stops along the way. The guide also took photos for us and was very considerate, making the whole experience enjoyable. At the summit, there was a breathtaking view that felt unreal. It's definitely worth a visit! However, since we went on a full moon day, there were fewer stars, which was a bit disappointing, so I would like to go again someday.

I participated with my son and wife. They picked us up at the hotel at 2:20 PM. There were two other Americans from Minnesota joining the tour, making a total of five participants. Our guide, James, explained about the Big Island in a mix of Japanese and English while driving. The area near the summit of Mauna Kea felt like a different world, resembling a desert or the moon, and the sunset view from there was amazing. We could see famous facilities like the Subaru Telescope up close, which made me feel the reality of being on the Big Island. Unfortunately, due to being close to a full moon, we couldn't see the Milky Way well during stargazing, but we were able to use the telescope to view Jupiter and the moon. James was always attentive, which made me feel safe participating.

Just one word: it was amazing.
At 2:10 PM, they came to pick us up at our hotel, and we had time to acclimate to the altitude with care for altitude sickness.
The sunset viewed from the summit was truly spectacular, unlike anything I had seen before. After that, we moved by car to the observation point, and the sandwiches served in the car were cold but still delicious hot sandwiches, which I enjoyed even though I'm not a fan of bread.
The starry sky was blessed with good weather, and we could see the Milky Way. Our guide, James, showed us Jupiter and Venus using a telescope. He also used a pointer to trace the constellations in the actual night sky, making it easy to understand the constellations. Finally, they took photos of each participant, and in those pictures, even the invisible stars were captured, which was fantastic.
This was our first time visiting the Big Island as a couple, and I would love to come back before we reach the age limit of 70.

I participated with a couple of friends. Five years ago, I couldn't go up due to a local demonstration, but this time the weather was great, and both the sunset and the starry sky were incredibly beautiful and moving.

I was a bit worried because it mentioned an English guide, but thanks to Sho-chan's excellent Japanese explanations, the enjoyment was doubled.

The price is a bit high, but it's worth going.

James's hospitality was outstanding. The explanations of the terrain visible on the way there, the air conditioning settings in the vehicle, and the background music were all excellent! During the sunset, he encouraged us to take photos with our smartphones, making it easier for us. Despite the cold, the hot cocoa warmed us up, and we were very satisfied to be able to gaze at the starry sky for as long as time allowed. Photos taken against the backdrop of the starry sky are something you can't capture on your own, so they make for a wonderful keepsake.

Due to it being winter, it seems that the mountain was closed the day before and we couldn't reach the summit, but we were able to safely climb to the top and see the snowy white Mauna Kea, just as its name suggests, which was a rare experience. It was also rare to see people skiing. The sunset and the starry sky were beautiful, unobstructed by clouds or moonlight. Our Japanese guide, Kouki, was kind, knowledgeable about the stars, and skilled at taking photos, making it a wonderful tour.

As the title suggests, I booked a tour for winter in Hawaii, timed for a new moon at the end of January. The communication and Q&A support leading up to the tour date were very smooth.

The van driver was also the tour guide, and I was surprised by their excellent Japanese. I would have liked to enjoy explanations in English with a more multinational group, but out of 12 participants, 10 were Japanese, so it couldn't be helped.

We departed from the Queens Market in Waikoloa at 3:00 PM. The van was fully booked with 12 people. We stopped at a rest area just before the summit to have sandwiches and water. The air was getting thinner, so we took a break for about 30 minutes to adjust. Here, we borrowed winter clothing.

Soon after, we entered off-road terrain and headed to the summit. With a temperature of 0°C and strong winds, it was quite cold. We were able to observe the sunset despite some clouds. After that, we descended a bit to the observation point. It took a while for the clouds to part, but eventually, we were able to see a few stars. The guide explained the constellations visible with a pointer. Venus can also be seen in Tokyo, haha. We were served hot cocoa, which was a lifesaver in the cold. That was much appreciated.

It was so cold and we couldn't observe much, so we left the site after about 15 minutes. After a short break, we returned to the Queens Market around 8:45 PM.

The tour itself was well-organized and reassuring. It really requires good timing with the season and luck for clear skies without clouds.

As a postscript, two days later, I woke up at 4:00 AM at a friend's house and gazed at the night sky, which was filled with stars. I thought if it had been clear on the mountain, it would have been incredibly moving.

ワイコロアのクイーンズマーケット15:00出発。バンは12人乗り満席。
山頂手前で休憩所によりサンドイッチとお水をいただきました。空気が薄くなっているので急激な変化をおさえるため。約30分程度。ここで防寒着をお借りします。

その後すぐにオフロードに入り山頂へ。気温0℃＋強風なのでかなり寒いです。夕日観測は雲はありましたがぎりぎり観れました。その後少しだけ下って観測ポイントへ。なかなか雲の隙間ができず暫く待っていると少しだけ隙間ができてわずかながら見ることができました。ポインタで見れる星座を解説。金星は東京でも観れます笑　寒さに助かるホットココアが配られました。これはありがたい。

あまりにも寒いのとあまり観測できなかったので15分くらいでその場から退散。途中休憩をはさんで20:45頃クイーンズマーケットにて解散となりました。

ツアー自体はよい企画でしっかり運営されているので安心です。
やはり季節選びと雲の無い晴天である運が必要ですね。

後日談
この2日後、現地友人宅4:00AMに起きて夜空を眺めましたが満点の星空でした。山で晴れていれば相当感動できるのだろと思いました。

Although the weather was not favorable, the staff's response was excellent. It was a dress shoot for our honeymoon, and the Japanese staff taught us about posing and angles. Despite the cold during the shoot, they provided support, and we had a wonderful time.

I would not change one thing about this tour. It exceeded our expectations. the communication before the experience was excellent. Jason was an exceptional guide - so attentive! He is an expert in astronomy and Hawaiian history which we greatly enjoyed. He had a great telescope and a cool machine that takes pictures of celestial objects in the sky that he EVEN EMAILED TO US LATER! Just wow! The chicken stew was delicious too! I went to the Onizuka Visitor Center, but the tour was canceled due to strong winds. However, I learned that I could reschedule for a fee, so I tried again the next day‼️ I was able to reach the summit safely. This was my fourth time, and I think the reassurance of having a reliable guide each time is very important. I went on the stargazing tour for the second time this time. It was a full moon, so there were slightly fewer visible stars than last time, but I was overwhelmed by the beautiful night sky. I saw many reviews mentioning that the weather is often bad in winter, but on January 3rd, when I participated, it was clear and we were able to reach the summit without any issues. The sunset seemed to fall into the clouds, but it was incredibly beautiful. Our guide, Sho-you, was entertaining during the journey and very considerate, making the travel time enjoyable.

As for stargazing, I thought it might be hard to see because the moon was bright, but we were able to see various constellations, and the moon, Saturn, and Jupiter looked stunning through the telescope. The guide's explanations about the night sky were very interesting for us!

The BLT sandwich we had at the summit was seasoned perfectly and tasted better than I had imagined (laughs). I haven't received the photos yet, but I'm sure they captured some wonderful moments.

The tour itself and the guide were fantastic, and we had a great time, but there was a slight disappointment. I was a bit late for the scheduled meeting time of 14:30, so I called to inform them, but the person who answered the phone (not the guide) was quite rude. In the end, we arrived almost on time, but when we got to the meeting place, the tour vehicle was not there... After several calls, it turned out that the meeting time we were given was incorrect, and it was actually 15:00. They did apologize, but I wondered if they had noticed it when I first called, it might have prevented any unpleasant feelings (the notification about the change in meeting time came later...).

Also, I had signed up for the English tour, but when we joined on the day, it turned out to be a Japanese tour. Since three out of four participants were Japanese, we ended up enjoying it, but I think it would have been better if we had been informed in advance about any changes.

So, while the tour itself deserves five stars, overall, I would rate it four stars.

冬は天気が悪い日が多いという口コミもたくさんみかけましたが、参加した1月3日は快晴で、問題なく山頂まで行けました。
夕日は雲の中に落ちる感じではありましたが、すごくきれいに見えました。
ガイドの翔陽さんの道中のトークもおもしろく、気配りも素敵な感じで、移動時間も楽しい時間を過ごせました。
星空観測も、月が明るい日だったので見えづらいかなと思いましたが星座もいろいろ見ることができ、望遠鏡で見た月、土星、木星もとてもきれいでした。ガイドさんの星空解説も、我々にとってはすごくおもしろかったです！
そして山頂でいただいたBLTサンド、塩がきいてて想像してたよりおいしかった（笑）
写真はまだいただいていないですが、きっと素敵なのを撮っていただけているはず。

ツアー自体もガイドさんもすばらしく、良い時間を過ごせたんですが、少しだけ残念だったことが。
通知されていた集合時間14：30に少しだけ遅れそうだったので電話連絡をしたのですが、電話口に出た方（ガイドさんとは別の方）の態度が大変横柄でした。結局ほぼ遅れずに到着できたんですが、待ち合わせの場所に行ってもツアーの車はおらず・・・何度か電話連絡して、結局我々に伝えられていた集合時間がまちがっていて、本当は15時だったことが判明。一応謝ってはいただいたんですが、最初に電話した時に気づいていただければいやな気持にならずに済んだのかな、と思いました（集合時間変更の通知は後から来ました・・・）。
また、英語ツアーで申し込んでいたんですが当日合流したら日本語のツアーになっていました。4人中3人は日本人だったので結果的には楽しめたんですが、変更がある場合は事前にご連絡いただけると良かったかなと思います。
ということで、ツアー自体は☆5つだったんですが、総合して☆４つにさせてもらいました。

My tour guide, James, was great! He was informative, kind, patient and made the experience fun. Seeing the sunset on a volcano summit and then stargazing afterwards is a bucket list thing that everyone should do! Unforgettable!!!
