Great first time horseback riding!

The tour guides were very nice and skilled at their jobs: driving down the rocky, curvy road to the horse barn and then helping everyone enjoy their time on their horses. Although my horse was not the most obedient, the guides always tried to help me keep up with the group and have patience with me and the horse. I definitely enjoyed my first time horseback riding especially since the walk around the area was very beautiful. After this experience, I definitely learned how to ride a horse (lead it, understand its needs, etc) and also appreciate how beautiful Waipio valley is.

Great day for a ride

It rained half the way the pickup spot to the valley so we were worried that we weren't going to get to go. But as it turned out 15 minutes after we got there the sun came out the clouds went away and it turned out to be a beautiful day in the valley we had a great ride. We got to cross rivers and streams and see beautiful waterfalls. Our horses were well-mannered and everyone in our group had a wonderful ride. Our guides were very knowledgeable about valley and the history. This is my second trip riding in this Valley and I would do it again

In 2013, I became hooked on horseback riding at Mendes Ranch on Maui, and I took lessons in Japan (about 110 rides) and obtained a level 4 certification. This was my second attempt at trail riding in Hawaii! There were eight people in the group, but I was the only Japanese. Even though I couldn't speak the language, I had a great time. A white woman from the mainland U.S. complimented me in broken Japanese, saying, "You're good at horseback riding," which really surprised me. I had an amazing time cantering across the grasslands.

Drive from Hilton Waikoloa to the location.
Make sure to familiarize yourself with the route using Google Maps or similar services.
There is a shopping center at a midpoint where you can take a restroom break.
If you don’t get lost, you can arrive in about an hour.

It's okay if you can't speak English.
The only time you’ll need to communicate is when learning how to ride the horse, so gestures and simple phrases should be sufficient. (If you have some English skills, you might be spoken to during the ride or in the vehicle...)

The horses move slowly in a single file along well-maintained mountain paths.
They do not enter grassy areas or dense forests, so your clothes won’t get too dirty.
The order of the horses is determined by their rank within the group you ride with, so companions will likely be scattered.

As a note for riding, be careful when the horse drinks water or eats grass, as the reins may suddenly pull downwards.
Other than that, the horses are well-trained, and even elementary school students (3rd and 4th grade) managed just fine.

It seems that the kids enjoyed horseback riding more than shopping in Honolulu!

馬は、整備された山道をゆっくりと1列になって進みます。
草むらや密林には入らないので、心配するほど衣服も汚れません。
馬の順番は、乗った馬の群れの中での順位で決まるので、同行者はほぼバラバラになります。

乗馬時の注意事項としては、馬が水を飲んだり草を食べたりする時、手綱が急に下向きに引っ張られるので気をつけて下さい。
それ以外はよく訓練されているので、小学生(4年・3年)でも余裕でした。

やはり子供は、ホノルルで買い物よりも乗馬が楽しかったようです!。

I participated once with my mother and daughter, and a second time with my family of three.

The wild paths that you can never experience in Japan are truly exhilarating, and the breathtaking views when you reach an open area are moving no matter how many times you see them.

The tour guide is a local from Waipi'o Valley, so they are very knowledgeable about the names of the lush trees and waterfalls, but of course, all the explanations are in English. Additionally, the formation is determined by the personality of the horse you are paired with, so if you get too far from the guides, you might not even hear the explanations (laughs).

For those who can enjoy such aspects and want to feel the vitality of Hawaii, I highly recommend this tour!

1度目は母娘2人で参加、2度目は家族3人で参加しました。

日本の乗馬体験では決して味わえないワイルドな道をずんずんと進み、
開けた場所に出た時のスケールの大きな景色は何度見ても感動します。

ツアーガイドはワイピオ渓谷の現地の方なため、生い茂る木々の名前や
滝の名前にはとても詳しいのですが、説明は当然すべて英語。
さらに隊列は相棒となった馬の性格で決まるため、2、3名つくガイドさんと
遠く離れてしまうと説明すら聞こえなくなってしまいます(笑)

そんなところも楽しめる方、ハワイの生命力を肌で感じたい方には

The meeting place was a bit hard to find, but everything else was a wonderful experience. Riding along the stream, taking photos, and the final fruit service made for a very fulfilling time. I definitely want to come back next time!

My only critique is that I wish we'd had more time to talk with the guides-- maybe even after we got back to the stables. It was also a good value for the money, but I'd have paid more for some extra time with them.

We participated as a group of five: three adults and two children (ages 10 and 13). There were also four American family members, making a total of nine people in the group. The young woman who checked us in at the meeting point drove a 4WD to the stable at the bottom of the valley, and she led us on horseback. A young man followed behind us. My horse was very well-behaved and hardly needed any reins, but my sister's and niece's horses tended to stray from the line to eat grass or started running a bit, which required some attention in the beginning. However, the young man behind us quickly helped, so there was no need to worry. For a full two hours, we were healed by the vibrant green of the valley and the sound of hooves, and everyone was very satisfied with the activity.

The guide's horse walked in front and behind us, and we rode in almost a straight line. We were the only Japanese participants. I couldn't catch all the English explanations, but it was fine because they were accompanied by gestures. The sound of the hooves, the babbling of the river, and the sound of the wind were very soothing. It was also fun to see the horses eating grass by the roadside and drinking water from the river. I would love to participate again.

I enjoyed it just like last time. When we were riding the horses, a foreign child started crying, which delayed our departure, so the riding time was shorter compared to last time, and the course was also shorter, which was disappointing. I recommended it to my son and his wife, and they were satisfied and enjoyed it. It's one of the activities I want to participate in again next time.

I trusted the reviews and signed up for the tour. Since I applied just before the tour, I was anxious because I didn't receive a reply, but my reservation was confirmed without any issues. After arriving at the meeting point, various tours had buses picking them up, but there were no signs. When I asked the guide, I was told that this bus was not for the horseback riding tour, and after about 15 minutes, we finally departed. It was difficult to understand the guide's English. I was the only Asian participant. We descended a steep path, crossed a river, and switched horses. My horse was very smart, gentle, and quite cute. Many of the horses had a laid-back vibe, similar to the people of Hawaii. During the tour, the guide's two dogs (both very friendly and cute) followed us the whole time. I felt that the tour duration was just right.

My newlywed husband and I LOVED this ride. our guide Grace(?) was friendly, knowledgeable, down to earth and very kind with the horses.
horses were very sweet for the most part, clean and well taken care of. barn was also in good shape. advertised as 3 hour ride but with the drive to the barn, info session and saddling up/down the ride itself was 2 hours, which was fine for us. breathtaking ride through Waipio valley. beautiful scenery that can't be matched. only bad part is our bums hurt the next day from sitting in the saddle! :D
would love to go again!

I had seen Waipi'o Valley from above, but next time, I definitely want to ride through the valley, as my husband hopes. We were a Japanese couple among the foreign participants. It was a fun time, leisurely riding through the forest and sometimes splashing across the river. When a foreigner spurred their horse, mine reacted and charged into the river at an incredible speed—it was truly surprising! Since it was my second time riding, I held onto the reins tightly, worried about letting go, and I was relieved that nothing happened. (My husband was also worried he might fall off!) Next time, a buggy ride sounds interesting too!

ワイピオ渓谷を上から眺めた事は有ったけど、次回は是非渓谷を乗馬でと言う主人の希望で参加外国人の方達に日本人のカップルと私達夫婦でした。
林の中をゆったりと時には川もザブザブと渡りながらの楽しい時間でした。
外国人の方が自分の馬をけしかけ、それに私の乗った馬が反応し、すごい勢いで川に突進して
いった時は本当にビックリ！二度目の乗馬だったので、手綱を離すものかと握りしめ何事も
無くてホッとしましたが。（主人も落馬するかとヒヤッとしたそうです！）
次回はバギーも面白そう！

We participated as a family in mid-March. To enter the Waipi'o Valley, you can go by car, horse-drawn carriage, four-wheeler, or horseback. Since our child wasn't old enough to drive a buggy, we chose to ride horses. It was our family's first horseback riding experience, lasting about two hours, and we were able to enjoy it with peace of mind. The weather was great, making it a perfect day.

After checking in, we browsed some nearby souvenirs until it was time to depart. First, we took a large 4WD van from the top of the valley down to the horse stable office. This road was quite steep, and it seemed like only a 4WD could make it up. At one point, the vehicle almost got stuck while crossing a small river.

Two hours of horseback riding felt just right. Any longer, and I think my backside would have been in pain. There were nine participants in total: three from Europe and America, two from Asia, and our family of four. The instructions were in English, but surprisingly, the basics of handling the horse were easy enough for children to understand. There was also a discussion about helmets, and since they weren't required by the waiver, the kids were fine without them. Our family was very satisfied with our first horseback riding experience. It was exhilarating to have the horse move according to our will. At first, I was so focused on handling the horse that I didn't notice the scenery, but as I got used to it, I was able to fully enjoy the deep nature of Waipi'o.

I was surprised to learn that there are people living at the bottom of the valley. The instructor mentioned that she lived there as a child and commuted to school from there every day. She said her grandmother still lives there. Occasionally, we saw people walking, and greeting them from horseback made me feel a bit important, which was nice (laughs).

The price was reasonable, and we joined from Kona, enjoying the drive along the way. I highly recommend this tour. It was also great to see the buildings from the movie "Honeymoon in Hawaii" in the nearby town of Honokaa.

By the way, the horse I rode, named Paul, was a bit of a troublemaker. I think he probably got scolded the most by the instructor. It wasn't my riding skills, I swear—probably (laughs).

途中、小さな川を渡るときも車がはまりかけました。

乗馬の2時間もちょうどいいかな。これ以上だとお尻が悲鳴をあげそうです。
参加人数は、9人でした。内欧米人が3人、アジア系が2人と我が家の4名。
説明は英語でしたが意外と基本の馬の扱いは簡単で、子供でも乗り方は十分理解できます。
何度か話題になってるヘルメットも誓約書に要らないとすれば子供もかぶらずにOKでしたよ。
初めての乗馬に家族も大満足。馬が自分の意思どおりに動くのは快感です。
前半は馬の扱いに夢中で景色に気が回りませんでしたが、慣れてくるとワイピオの深い大自然を堪能できました。

びっくりしたのは渓谷の下にも住んでいる人がいること。
インストラクターのお姉さんも子供のころは渓谷の下に住んでいて毎日そこから学校に
通っていたそうです。おばあちゃんは今でも住んでるって言ってた。
たまに歩いてる人がいるんだけど、馬の上から挨拶するとちょっと自分が偉くなったようで
気分がよかったです(笑)

お値段も安いし、KONAから参加したんですが途中のドライブもいい感じだし、
お勧めのツアーですね。
近くにあるホノカア（昔、ホノカアボーイという映画の舞台になった）の町で
映画の建物を見れたのも良かったです。

ちなみに私が乗ったポールという馬はちょっと暴れん坊でした。
たぶんインストラクターのお姉さんに一番怒られてたんじゃないかな。
私の乗馬の技術のせいではないですよ～、たぶん(笑)

After reading Satomi Kobayashi's "Aloha Spirit," I was looking forward to experiencing horseback riding in Waipi'o Valley when I visited the Big Island! About half of the participants were Japanese, and the other half were from English-speaking countries. There were only Japanese among the Asian participants.

It was my first time horseback riding, and I was nervous, but it was a very kind and enjoyable experience. I walked through the river and felt that I would like to try horseback riding again. It was a great experience to feel the great nature of Waipi'o Valley up close.

My daughter (who might be under 18) didn't want to wear the helmet because it smelled bad, but the cuteness of the horses made up for it. I wore water shoes so that my shoes wouldn't get dirty. It rains a lot on the mountain so it was postponed twice. We were looking for a more relaxed, free ride which they intimated but it was not quite what we were looking for. There were four other people, most of whom didn't know what they were doing. So maybe if it was just my daughter and I, it would have been better. The ranch is nice and if you're inexperienced and just looking for a mostly plodding experience, it's a good activity. Using VELTRA was a good experience. They have a very good system.

You can enjoy an hour and a half of horseback riding. The grasslands stretch as far as the eye can see! The instructions are in English, so if you don't understand English, it's better to read the instructions hanging on the wall before participating. There are hills, making it thrilling. While your horse is eating grass, the other horses move ahead, and you might find yourself trying to catch up with the group, which left me, as a beginner, exhausted by the end. You can really enjoy it to the point where you wonder if you still have to walk!

This is the best hawaiian experience ever…I have done this twice! Not the typical tour, a local hawaiian Mika, takes you on a personal tour, with local folklore about the menehunas, he shows the local fruit, plants, how the hawaiian grew the taro plant..and then we can eat and taste the local fruit. I ride horses, and have ridden many a tourist rides, all over my travels, but this my favorite, the spiritual Waipio Valley with a local guide. Local horses (and you ride by wild mustangs in the valley) amazing to see.! ,Even my co-worker, from NY who has never been on a horse, loved it and feeling so close to nature and the culture. I will go on this ride every time I come to Big Island!
My favorite Hawaiian experience..you feel very connected with the culture, and nature.

I participated alone, but I was with a Japanese couple. The guide, who didn’t speak much English, just walked silently at a slow pace. Although it was supposed to be a 2.5-hour course, it felt quite short, and I was disappointed. This is my third time horseback riding in Hawaii, but is this how it usually is? I won't be horseback riding in Hawaii again.

Being in Waipi'o Valley itself was wonderfully refreshing. It would be tough to walk since you have to cross rivers and navigate bumpy paths, but I don't like cars, so it was a fun experience unique to horseback riding. However, since we were moving slowly and following the person in front of us, it was a bit boring that we couldn't go ahead or run.

ワイピオ渓谷にいること自体がすばらしく気持ちよかった。川を渡ったりでこぼこ道を行ったりするので歩くのは大変だろうけど、車は好きではないので乗馬ならではの楽しい経験でした。ただ、前の人にくっついてゆっくりなので、先に行ったり走ったりができないのでその点はちょっとつまらないです。

I participated because I wanted to ride in a wide open space, as the riding club was only within a circle. Since the riding styles were different, both the horses and I were a bit confused at first, but we quickly got used to it and started moving. The horses were calm and well-trained, knowing the route, so they responded well to just a little cue. The feeling of galloping across the vast grasslands was the best!

Before starting, regarding the rental coats, it was more of a "feel free to use them if you want" attitude. The weather was nice, and we were wearing jackets, plus the rental coats weren't very clean, so we intended not to borrow one. However, since many people (we were the only Japanese) were borrowing them, I asked, "Should I wear a coat?" and was told, "It's better to wear one because it's cold." Indeed, once we got out to the grasslands, the wind was very strong, and it was the right decision to borrow a coat.

In Japan, there would likely be polite advice given at the beginning... They were very nice people, but I definitely felt the culture of personal responsibility in America.

乗馬クラブではサークルの中だけなので、広いところで乗馬がしたくて参加しました。
乗馬スタイルが違うので、最初は人間も馬も少し戸惑いましたが、すぐに慣れて動きました。
馬は性格もおとなしくよく馴れていて路も知っているので、少しの合図でよく言うことを聞いてくれます。
大草原を駈ける気分は最高でした！
スタート前に貸出のコートについて「使うんだったらどうぞ」という感じでした。
天気も良く私達は上着を着ていたし、貸出コートもあまりきれいではなく、借りないつもりでしたが多くの人が(日本人は私達だけ)借りていたので「コートは着たほうがいい？」と聞くと「寒いから着たほうがいい」との事でした。確かに草原に出るととても風が強く、コートを借りて正解でした。
日本だったら最初に丁寧なアドバイスがあるだろうに・・・
とても感じの良い人たちでしたが、さすがにアメリカ自己責任の文化を実感しました。

As a horseowner I am always a little leery of trail riding at unknown stables but I was pleasantly surprised to see the good condition and decent manners of these horses. They were very suitable to carry a wide variety of sizes and experience of riders. The ride itself was well escorted by friendly staff and the scenery was beautiful and enjoyed at a steady walking pace with the opportunity to take photographs of the beautiful and unique valley. The van ride down into and up out of the valley was an adventure in itself with amazing views. Shop at the art/gift store where you park as they have lots of lovely stuff at good prices.

I would rate this a "must do" on your trip to Big Island.
