WOW! What a fun evening! We were reluctant to do this activity but it turned out be the most enjoyable of all of our adventures in Hawaii. You would never know you were in Hawaii atop this beautiful snow capped mountain. The sights are unbelievable and the sunset probably the best you will ever see. The staff was very knowledgeable and accommodating. This is a must do activity in Hawaii. You won稚 be disappointed.

I returned home yesterday, and I'm reminiscing by looking back at my photos. Although I was disappointed that my initial reservation for Mauna Kea on the 5th was canceled, we went ahead on the final day of our stay, the 8th. It was cold! The snow that fell until yesterday created a stunning winter wonderland in this "tropical country." However, while we were able to see the sunset, the cloudy sky made it impossible to see the stars.
Instead, we were able to clearly see the bright red river of lava flowing from Kilauea volcano through the telescope that was set up for us! This was a sight that would be impossible to see during the day and also not something you would encounter while hiking Kilauea, so it was incredibly moving. The staff were also surprised, saying, "I've never seen it this clearly before."
Satisfied with that, we set off on our way back, but suddenly veered off the main road at Highway 19 and stopped. Although it wasn't quite at the summit, we were treated to a breathtaking starry sky that would be impossible to see in Japan, and we received a light-hearted explanation of the Milky Way and constellations. It was my first experience confirming our zodiac signs, Cancer and Gemini, with my partner.
Thank you so much, Minoyan, for the extra direction and guidance!

Additionally, our guide, Mr. Yamamoto, was excellent with his stories, explanations, and attentiveness to guests (we hit it off since we are both from Kansai). It became a wonderful memory.
Also, my wife forgot her sunglasses on the bus, but they were kindly delivered to our hotel. We are very grateful. If the opportunity arises, this is definitely a tour I would like to take again.

I've been to Hawaii several times, but this was my first visit to the Big Island.
Of course, the main purpose was Mauna Kea!!
The cold was even more than I had imagined, but the satisfaction and emotional impact exceeded my expectations.
Such scenery is something you definitely can't see in Japan. I've traveled to various places abroad, but this has truly become one of the places I’m glad I visited.
Although it was a long day, listening to the guide's stories made me feel neither tired nor bored at all. The guides, who feel a deep reverence for Mauna Kea, provided guidance that was nothing short of divine.
It was a shock that felt like a double punch!!
Thank you, I want to go again.

Hello,
I returned to Japan with many wonderful memories after watching the setting sun and the star-filled sky at Mauna Kea.
Tomorrow, I'm heading to Los Angeles. I went to Hawaii to refresh my mind. Experiencing the slow-paced Hawaiian time and the warmth of the people helped me relieve my stress, and I had very fulfilling days.
I spent a month on the Big Island, but I really wanted to go to Mauna Kea. I applied to several companies, but was turned down because of my wheelchair. By chance, I called a nature school thinking it was a long shot, and I remember being surprised at how easily they accepted me.
The majestic nature of Mauna Kea was a precious experience and a memory I will never forget. It was an emotional day, touched by the kindness of the Japanese people I was with and Mr. Yamamoto.
Having someone kindly carry me and seeing numerous stars through the telescope for the first time became a lifelong memory for me.
After a year of training in graduate school, I am seriously considering going to Kona.
Thank you so much for everything. I will definitely contact you the next time I go, so please take care of me then.

Every day is spent commuting to work on a crowded train, filled with sweat and tears.
The sunset viewed from Mauna Kea, the shadows on the horizon, and the night sky of that day will never be forgotten. It wasn't the lights of buildings or the glow of a late-night vending machine... it was such a wonderful night sky that I could see artificial satellites with the naked eye, illuminated by the moonlight.
Thank you for the best day!!
Thank you!!!!

I returned to Japan after conquering Mauna Kea for two consecutive days, like a dream.
I'm back to my usual routine, but something feels different; every day is enjoyable no matter what I'm doing.
I believe it's all thanks to the power I received from Mauna Kea and the countless stars.
Above all, meeting you, Nishida-san, has been significant. You have a mysterious aura, and being with you made me feel like "I have to enjoy life, or I'll miss out."
I'm planning to join Nishida's tour again. It's amazing how you're increasing your fan base all the way over here in distant Japan; you're quite the charming rogue!

Having grown up in Hawaii, I have grown very fond of Mauna Kea and it is definitely my favorite place to be. This trip, though pricey, is well worth the expense. When will you ever see both the North Star and Southern Cross in one place? And when will you ever feel like you can just reach out and touch the stars. The staff is very knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions and concerns. This is by far the best tour I have ever taken on the Hawaiian islands. The journey along Saddle Road is long and takes you on some rough roads. I appreciated the several photo stops along the way. We took a break at Onizuka, enjoying a bento and miso soup. At this point, the sun was quite bright, and sunglasses were necessary. As we drove further up the mountain, we could see the observatory sparkling in the sunset. We took photos and borrowed long coats to observe the sunset at the summit. The wind was strong and it was really cold, but it was definitely worth it. Even the photos taken with my cellphone were beautiful. You could see the colors of the sky changing rapidly. We brought sunglasses, but regretted not bringing gloves. It’s better to have both gloves and sunglasses. In the evening, we did some stargazing a little further down the mountain. They taught us about the stars while sharing interesting stories. I was thrilled to see Saturn clearly through the telescope, almost as if it were drawn in a cartoon. We could even see satellites moving. Of course, we also saw several real shooting stars. It was like experiencing the starry sky you see in a planetarium in Japan, and I thought I would like to go see the winter constellations again.

The final event of our week-long trip to the Big Island was the "Mauna Kea Summit and Stargazing Tour." We joined the tour from Waimea and headed straight to the summit, but along the way, we were treated to a rainbow and the vast sight of Mauna Loa, making the journey absolutely captivating. Having seen plenty of lava up close at Kilauea, the scenery here felt expansive and majestic.
After a short break at the visitor center, we finally reached the summit. It took us about 20 minutes to climb to the top. The wind was incredibly strong and freezing, but the view from up there was beyond words (please see the photos).
Additionally, the starlit sky and shooting stars we saw from a spot just below the summit after sunset are unforgettable.

Over many years of taking tours, I have seen many tour guides. However Buck Pelley ranks at the top of the stack. He is incredibly knowledgeable on such topics as geology, astronomy, plant life, and the history of the area. I hope that Buck remains as a tour guide. I would take another tour with him anytime anywhere.
The only thing that I would improve on the tour is the dinner. Although I understand the challenge of bringing food to the top of Mona Kea, the fish could have been hotter with a lot less salt. While the soup was good it was barely warm. Cookies were excellent
Best wishes,
