We participated as a family of eight. With four people over 60 years old, including the oldest at 73, I was worried about whether we could handle climbing a mountain higher than Mount Fuji at 4,200 meters. I thought it would be a more challenging tour, but they provided breaks for altitude adjustment, and everyone was in great shape.

In Kona, the temperature was 20 degrees, while at the summit of Mauna Kea, it was minus 2 degrees, so there was a 22-degree temperature difference. However, the cold weather gear they lent us was perfect.

I participated with my wife and daughter. Actually, the day before, we went to Kilauea Volcano and stargazing, but unfortunately, the weather was not good, and we were disappointed that we couldn't see the volcano or the stars. However, Mauna Kea had great weather, starting with an impressive sunset, and we were able to see a sky full of stars, including the Milky Way. Additionally, I was lucky enough to see a shooting star, which made my wife envious.

As advice for everyone participating, dinner is served around 3 PM, which is quite early, so it's better to have an early lunch or eat a small amount. (Don't expect much from the bento...) Also, there is time to acclimatize to the high altitude at the Onizuka Center, but once you reach the summit, you may experience headaches, palpitations from just a little movement, and dizziness, so be careful. Furthermore, it gets quite cold in winter, so I think it's a good idea to prepare hand warmers and tights. Masashi's tour provided pants, which was helpful. 家内と娘と三人で参加しました。実は前日にキラウエア火山とスターゲイジングにも行ったのですが、あいにくに天気で火山も星もよく見られずがっかりしていましたが、マウナケアは天気がよく感動的な夕日から始まり天の川を含め満天の星を見る事ができました。さらに私だけ流れ星も見られて家内にうらやましがられています。参加する皆さんにアドバイスとしては、夕飯の時間が１５時頃ですごく早いので昼は早めにとるか、少量にしたほうがよいでしょう。（お弁当はあまり期待しないほうが、、、）また、オニズカセンターで高地の低酸素に体を慣らす時間を取りますが、山頂に着くと頭痛やちょと動いただけで動悸や体がふらついたりするので気を付けたほうがよいでしょう。また、冬はかなり寒いのでホッカイロやタイツを用意したほうがよいと思います。まさしのツアーではズボンも用意してくれたので助かりました。ズボンがあるのはまさしのツアーだけと言っていました。いずれにしてもハワイ島に行ったらぜひ経験してほしいツアーだと思います。

If you go to the Big Island, visiting Mauna Kea is a must! I think it's one of the two major highlights along with Kilauea Volcano.

It's really convenient to drive to a mountain that's taller than Mount Fuji, and you can have experiences that you can't usually get. It's amazing to be able to climb above the clouds so easily.

You can see a sky full of stars that you can't see in Japan, and due to the different latitude, you can observe constellations that are not usually visible.

The cold is unimaginable from down below, but they provide excellent cold weather gear for you, making it a highly recommended tour.

I knew it would be a full moon when I signed up, but since I read in experiences that it might still be visible, I decided to go ahead and book it since I was staying on the Big Island.

The sea of clouds on the way to the summit and the sunset at the top were incredibly magical and beautiful—it was the best! The guide mentioned that because it was a full moon, there were fewer stars visible than usual. However, I was satisfied with the photos taken of the full moon through the telescope☆

In November, the weather isn't very good, and on the day we went, there were only thin clouds. However, the day before, it was completely covered by thick clouds, and no stars were visible at all.

山頂へ登るまでの雲海と、山頂での夕日は大変幻想的で美しく最高でした！
星空は、やはり満月なので星はいつもよりは見える数が少ないとガイドさんは言ってました。
ただ、望遠鏡で拡大した満月を写真に撮ってもらい満足でした☆

１１月は気候もあんまり良くないらしく私たちの言った日はうっすら雲がかかっている程度でしたが、前日は厚い雲に覆われ一切星空は見えなかったそうです。

ツアー中色々写真を撮ってくれて、後日ブログからダウンロードできるようにしてくれていて助かります♪♪

お天気はその日にならないとわからないですが、ハワイ島に行かれるなら是非お勧めのツアーですよ＾＾

The Japanese tour was fully booked, so my family participated in this one. The tour guide spoke English at a relentless speed, so I couldn't understand the detailed explanations, but I was very satisfied to see the sunset above the sea of clouds and an unexpectedly beautiful starry sky.

Many of the other participants were middle-aged individuals from the mainland United States, and everyone was very sociable, which made for an interesting experience in that sense.

There were meal options at a mountain lodge along the way, but I think everyone ended up eating chicken. At the top of the mountain, someone felt a bit unwell, but there were oxygen tanks available, so they recovered partway through. Since the travel was only by car, there was no physical activity at all.

During the stargazing, the explanations were thorough, but the cold really hit me. It's best to prepare as much warm clothing as possible. It might have been even better if I had studied the stars in advance. It was my first time seeing so many clear stars.

　山の上では、少し具合が悪くなった方がいましたが、酸素ボンベが準備してあったので途中から復活していました。車での移動だけなので運動量はまったくなかったです。
　天体観測のときは、じっくり説明をしてもらえるので理解できないこともあり寒さが身にしみました。できる限りの防寒具を用意していったほうがよいです。
　事前に星の勉強をしていけばもっとよかったかもしれません。あんなにたくさんのはっきりとした星を見たのは初めてです。

This time I participated alone. Indeed, it can feel a bit lonely with mostly couples around, but the guide really helped to lift the mood. There were newlywed couples and seasoned couples, but participating alone can also be enjoyable.

As for the weather, it’s mostly clear at the summit, so I don’t think you need to worry about that. They also provide warm clothing, so there’s no need to stress about that either, but make sure to bring long pants and proper shoes. Wearing Crocs can be a bit tough.

There were about 16 participants in total, and the vehicle was full. There was one young couple, but the rest were middle-aged couples from English-speaking countries. Among them, my spouse and I were the only Japanese. At the start of the tour, the guide introduced each participant, and we responded when our first names were called.

After about an hour, we stopped at a former ranch site for a break. There were portable toilets available. The main dishes, snacks, and drinks that we had selected during registration were distributed, and we enjoyed an early dinner around a table inside a tent. After that, we were handed bottled water and warm clothing (just jackets). We drove along a steep, bumpy road, enjoying views of the sea of clouds as we headed for the summit. We arrived at the top about an hour before sunset; it was drizzling below, but here it was beautifully clear. We visited the observatory from the outside, took photos, and watched the setting sun.

After it got dark, we moved to the mountainside, warmed up with the snacks and cocoa we were given, and finally began stargazing using lasers and telescopes. 一組だけ若いカップルがいましたが、後はみな英語圏の中年のカップルでした。その中で、日本人は我々夫婦だけでした。ツアーの始まりにガイドさんから一人一人参加者の紹介がありました。ファーストネームを呼ばれたら返事をします。

1時間ほどして、途中牧場跡地で車を降りて、休憩を取ります。仮設トイレもあります。申込時に選んでおいたメインディッシュ、お菓子、飲み物等が配られ、テントの中のテーブルを囲んでの早めの夕食です。その後、ボトルに入った水と防寒服（上着のみ）が手渡されます。急こう配のでこぼこ道を走り、途中雲海を眺めたりしながら山頂を目指します。サンセットの1時間ぐらい前に山頂に到着、下界は小雨でしたが、ここは綺麗に晴れていました。外観からの天文台見学をしたり、写真を撮ったりしながら、沈みゆく夕日を眺めました。

暗くなってから山の中腹に移動し、配られたお菓子とココアで暖まった後、いよいよレーザーと天体望遠鏡を使っての星空観測です。満天の星と天の川を堪能した1時間でした。最後に鬼塚ビジターセンターでトイレを済ませ、お土産を買って帰路につきました。
事前の情報ではかなり寒いように聞いたので、服をいっぱい持っていきましたが、当日は全然寒くありませんでした。４月～１０月頃のサンセットツアーなら寒さには神経質にならなくても良いのではと思います。また、いわゆる高山病についても私たちのツアーでは全員問題ありませんでした。役に立ったのは懐中電灯です。1人1個は必需品です。
ガイドさんの英語は、ちょうどＤＪのようなノリで早口でした。我々の力では聞き取るのは難しかったです。ツアーの始めに全体のスケジュール説明もあったとは思いますが、わかりませんでした。

On October 20th, I boarded the Nakane-san bus.

I was worried about altitude sickness, but Nakane-san taught us various things like how to drink water and precautions, and as long as I followed his advice, I was fine.

The sunset sinking into the clouds was truly beautiful, and I think it's worth seeing at least once. The "shadow of the Earth" that I saw after the sunset was very beautiful and left a strong impression on me. Nakane-san took a silhouette photo of a newlywed couple with the sunset in the background, and it turned out so beautifully that it became a memorable picture from their honeymoon. I have it set as my phone wallpaper and PC desktop image.

During the stargazing afterward, even though the moon was bright, I was still able to see many stars. Lying on the ground and looking up at the star-filled sky, I could see the Milky Way and even satellites with the naked eye! We also took photos with the starry sky in the background, creating wonderful memories that will be cherished both in memory and in record.

As for clothing, I wore:
On top: Heattech long sleeves → sweatshirt → Uniqlo light down → borrowed down jacket
On the bottom: Heattech tights → long pants → borrowed pants
This was just right for me (I tend to get hot, so it was a bit chilly). My husband, who gets cold easily, borrowed a hat and gloves and used a heat pack he brought from Japan.

高山病が心配でしたが、ナカネさんが水の飲み方や注意事項など色々教えて下さるので、その通りにしていたら大丈夫でした。

雲に沈む夕陽は本当にキレイで一度は見てみる価値があると思います。私は夕陽が沈んだ後に見た『地球の影』がとてもキレイで印象に残りました。ナカネさんが新婚のカップルに夕陽をバックに２人が見つめ合うシルエットの写真を撮って下さったのですが、それがとてもキレイで新婚旅行の思い出の１枚となっています。携帯の待ち受けとＰＣのデスクトップ画像にしています。

その後の星空観測、月が明るかったのですがそれでもたくさんの星を見ることが出来ました。地面に寝転がって見る満天の星空、天の川や人工衛星まで肉眼で見えました！星空をバックにした写真も撮っていただき、記憶にも記録にも残るステキな思い出となりました。

服装ですが、
上はヒートテックの長袖→トレーナー→ユニクロのライトダウン→貸してもらったダウン
下はヒートテックのタイツ→長ズボン→貸してもらったズボン
でちょうど良かったです。（暑がりの私でやや寒いくらいかな。）寒がりの夫はさらに帽子と手袋を貸してもらい、日本から持参したカイロを貼っていました。

夜ご飯や星空観測の時にあたたかい飲み物を出して下さる心遣いもうれしかったです。ナカネさんありがとうございました！とってもステキな思い出が出来ました。

On September 29, I participated alone. I never expected to see a sunset at an altitude of over 4,000 meters, higher than Mount Fuji. The fact that we could drive to the summit made it very appealing, especially since I have no climbing experience. Thanks to the advice from our guide, Chizuko, I didn't have to worry about altitude sickness (laughs), and in front of me was a wonderful sunset... I truly had an amazing time.

That night was a full moon, so the night sky was a bit too bright for stargazing, but when our guide Chizuko pointed out the stars with a laser pointer, we saw a shooting star in that exact spot for a brief moment...☆. It was a very interesting moment where all participants got to see the shooting star.

I was able to create the best memories on my first trip to the Big Island of Hawaii. Thank you very much. I will definitely go back to the Big Island~♪

９月２９日、男一人で参加いたしました。
富士山よりも高い標高４０００メートルを超える山の山頂でサンセットを見れるなんて思ってもいませんでした。
山頂まで車で移動するので登山経験がない私でも安心して参加できるのがとても魅力でした。
心配していた高山病もガイドの千鶴子さんのアドバイスのお陰で大丈夫（笑）、そして目の前では素晴らしいサンセット・・・。ほんとに素晴らしい時間を過ごすことができました。
この日は満月ともあって星空観測にはちょっと明かる過ぎの夜空でしたが、ガイドの千鶴子さんがレーザーポインターで星空を差した瞬間、ちょうどその場所に短い時間でしたが流れ星が・・・☆。参加者皆が流れ星を見れるという非常に面白い場面もありました。
初めてのハワイ島で最高の思い出作ることができました。ありがとうございました。
またハワイ島に行きます~♪

My worries about the cold turned out to be unfounded, and I was captivated by the ever-changing sky show without suffering from a lack of oxygen. Unfortunately, when the sunset occurred, clouds obscured the view, and I couldn't see the sun sinking into the sea of clouds, but the beauty of the surrounding clouds dyed in shades of crimson was beyond words.

I was also impressed by the guide's meticulous attention to detail, and I would love to participate again. Next time, I definitely want to enjoy the sunset.

The food was not very good this time. I didn't get the choice I requested on their website (beef) and instead got cold/dry chicken. I went with Forest and Trails since I used them for this tour the last time I was on the Big Island. The last time we stopped near the Ranger station and were allowed to go in and look at the exhibits, this time we parked in a remote corner and were too far away. The views were amazing and well worth the little issues that came up.

Last time, I couldn't make a reservation and joined an English tour. While the explanations and other aspects were the same, there was no luxurious service like having staff take group photos at the summit or a group photo with the night sky as a backdrop. A friend living in Hawaii mentioned they had been to the Onizuka Center for International Astronomy located halfway up Mauna Kea, but the sunset from the summit is truly magnificent. Since the center gets quite crowded with the general public visiting for stargazing, it was impossible to lie down and observe the stars at the observation point like in this tour. I was deeply moved by this incredibly luxurious experience. It was a new moon, so I was able to gaze at a sky full of stars and the Milky Way while lying down, and I realized once again that Earth is just one part of the universe by participating in this tour.

ハワイに住んでいる知人はマウナケア中腹にあるオニヅカ記念センターまでは行ったことがあるようでしたが、やはり山頂からのサンセットは素晴らしいですし（記念センターは一般の方も星空観測に訪れるので結構込んでいるため）今回のツアーのように、観測地点で寝転がって星空の観測は無理であるため、とっても贅沢な経験をさせてもらったと感激しました。丁度、新月だったので、本当に降るような満天の星空と天の川を寝転びながら眺め、地球って宇宙の一つなんだな。。。と、このツアーに参加して改めて感じました。

We participated as a couple on August 21, 2012. Our guide was Shigeru Yamamoto, who provided clear explanations with helpful examples. The highlight was undoubtedly the sunset at the summit, along with the constellation explanations and telescope viewing. Watching the refreshing sunset while wearing a down jacket to keep warm was a heartwarming experience. One should not speak of Mauna Kea without witnessing this. The stars spread across the sky were breathtaking. The precise stars and constellations pointed out with a laser pointer, along with the clear explanations, were fantastic. We also got to see Saturn's rings through the telescope that was set up. Shigeru Yamamoto took great group photos of all participants against the backdrop of the starry sky, as well as individual photos, which were later available for free download online, making for a wonderful keepsake. This is the most highly recommended tour.

I participated last September.
The weather looked ominous around Saddle Road, and I was worried, but the sunset at the summit was truly beautiful. The sun sank into the sea of clouds in an instant, and I wished I could have watched it a little longer.

Since it was summer, we were picked up at the hotel at 3:30 PM. We visited about five hotels in total.

On the way up Mauna Kea, we took breaks and took photos on the volcanic plateau while being jostled in the car, arriving at the Onizuka Center in an hour and a half.

There, we enjoyed a Japanese bento box, and I was impressed that it came with miso soup.

After that, we put on warm clothes, hats, and made our way to the summit. At the top, we received detailed explanations at the observation deck, took sunset photos, and had various commemorative pictures taken with a sign at the summit of Mauna Kea.

Afterward, we did some stargazing in a spot with little wind. The explanations were easy to understand, and we were able to take photos, creating unforgettable memories. Thank you very much.

I think those who participated in the Masashi Nature School (where staff took photos that can be viewed later) were quite lucky. I highly recommend it. I would like to use this service again the next time I visit the Big Island.

マサシネイチャースクールに参加された方（スタッフが撮った写真があとで見れるなど）はかなりラッキーだと思います。おすすめです。また次回ハワイ島に来た際は利用したいです。

This was the highlight of my stay on the Big Island. The staff were professional and knowledgeable about the stars, and I learned a lot. We joined another similar tour along the way, and from what I saw, the lunch here seemed to have better contents. It was also great that they didn't use disposable containers, making it eco-friendly. The stargazing was done in a unique location just for this tour, and I was able to see Saturn's rings through the telescope. I was thrilled that the staff even took a photo of Saturn for us. The guide mentioned that this tour had the latest return time, and they really took their time with us, making it worth participating. I highly recommend it!
