Mauna Kea Summit Sunrise & Stargazing Tour

I recommend this Sunrise tours especially to people who never conquers mountain peak higher then 3000 m.
Of course, I recommend it to everyone else, but for those who are for the first time on a higher elevation this is simply the must.

The flow of emotions I felt when I reached the peak was so overwhelming that I couldn't stop the tears.
It's almost impossible to express the feeling of inner fulfillment when you stand on the top of a high mountain watching the sunrise!

The Veltra crew did outstanding planning by set of small stops so our body can adapt to over 4000 m attitude.
First we stopped at 2000 to adapt to coldness of night and change in altitude. (They distributed parkas to all of us at that time)
Then we stopped at around 3000 m for unforgettable stargazing experience.
I saw shapes of Milky way, before but this was on completely different level.
I think the altitude of 3000 m makes substantial difference. There you don't have any light pollution but also the air is already thin enough to give you unforgettable experience of pure connection with the universe.

Then finally, just when you think that it can not get better then this, on the brink of dawn, we reached the summit and saw and felt unforgettable sunrise that will, at least in my case, stay forever in my memories.

I would like to use this opportunity to thank Veltra team and especially to our guide Stefan for allowing me to experience this unforgettable sunrise.

We climbed the mountain in a full car under a cloudy sky with some fog. I was half giving up, thinking that we wouldn't be able to see the sunset or the starry sky. We were lent warm clothes, had lunch, and took some time to acclimatize before heading to the summit. At first, we couldn't see anything due to the fog, but around sunset, the fog cleared up nicely, and we were able to see the sunset, which was breathtaking. Initially, at the first observation point, we couldn't see the stars because of the fog, but at the next location, the beauty of the Milky Way and other sights overwhelmed us in no time. I applied online to receive the tour photos, but I'm a bit concerned as I haven't received a response yet.

温かい服も貸して頂き、弁当を食べ、高度順応に時間を撮ってから山頂へ。最初はガスで見えませんでしたが、日没頃には上手くガスも切れて夕日を見ることが出来、美しさに圧倒されました。星空も最初のみ観測地ではガスがお贈り見えませんでしたが、移動した次の地点では天の川等美しさに、これまたあっという間されました。ツアーの写真頂けるとのことでネットでしていいどおり申し込みましたが、今の所返事なしの点が気になってはおりますが｡

My friend and I went on the stargazing and sunrise tour to the Summit of Mauna Kea yesterday. Todd was our tour guide and extremely personable. He was also a wealth of knowledge on constellations, and local landscape. The stargazing was outstanding, we saw satellites, shooting stars, and a ton of constellations not visible usually at home. The summit was breathtaking, watching the sun come up we could see the whole island and Maui from up there. It was like being on top of the world. I definitely recommend it!

If you're going to the Big Island, I highly recommend it! You can see the best sunset and, surprisingly, a lot of stars. The explanations about the mountains and constellations along the way were very easy to understand, and the attention to guests was excellent! While the weather can be a factor, I hope you get to experience the view from above the clouds.

I rated this tour one star, but there were no issues with the content of the tour or the guide's response. However, it seems we fell into the 10% of the 90% clear skies on our observation day, as we could only see a faint sunset and just three stars in the night sky (three stars...). Therefore, my satisfaction level for the sunset and stargazing tour was zero. There's nothing we can do about the weather. Since we participated on the fourth day after the hurricane passed, the road from the Onizuka Visitor Center to the summit was reportedly closed due to landslides. The guide kindly explained this at pickup, and at that point, we could cancel for a full refund. We decided to participate, and by the time we arrived at the Onizuka Visitor Center, the road to the summit had reopened. However, it seems some people canceled on the day. Our guide, Matsuzaki, did his best to keep the spirits up despite only seeing a little bit of the sun at the summit, and he took many photos for us. During the stargazing, he diligently searched for a spot without clouds and explained the stars to the participants, who were feeling quite down since we couldn't see any stars at all (laughs). In the car on the way back, everyone had a somber atmosphere, and I think the guide felt quite uncomfortable. However, I believe the content was wonderful. If I ever come back to the Big Island, I would like to participate with this company again.

評価を★一つにしてしまいましたが、ツアーの内容もガイドの方の対応も全く問題はありません。ただし私たちの観測日は晴天率90％の中で10%にあたってしまったらしく、サンセットもわずかな光しか見えず、星空にいたっては目視できた星は3つだったため（３つって・・・）、サンセット＆星空観測のためのツアーとしては満足度ゼロとなりました。天候ばかりは仕方がありません。ハリケーン通過後、4日目の参加だったのでオニヅカビジターセンターから山頂への道が土砂崩れ等で、お迎え時の情報では閉鎖されていました。お迎え時、ガイドの方がそのことを丁寧に説明してくれ、この時点でキャンセルしても100%返金されます。私たちは参加し、結果的にオニヅカビジターセンター到着時に閉鎖していた山頂への道も解除となりましたが、当日キャンセルをされた方もいるようでした。ガイドの松崎さんは山頂でもわずかな太陽しか見えない中、一生懸命盛り上げてくれ、たくさんの写真も撮ってくださいました。星空観測でも雲がない場所を懸命に探してくれ、テンションだだ下がりの参加者達に星が全く見えない中、懸命に星空の説明をしていただきました（笑）。帰りの車の中では参加者一様、葬式みたいな雰囲気でガイドの方もいたたまれなかったと思いますが、内容としては素晴らしいと思います。またいつかハワイ島に来ることがありましたら、こちらの会社で参加したいと思いました。

This time, during our two-week stay, the only tour was this stargazing! I was really looking forward to it, but unfortunately, the sky was cloudy and the moon was out. We could see the large moon, but the stars we were hoping to see were much better viewed back in Japan. It was disappointing.

If you have flexibility in your schedule, it's better to consider the moon phase and the time the moon rises when making a reservation. We didn't think about it at all.

This August, I participated in the Mauna Kea Summit Sunset & Stargazing Tour. Unfortunately, we couldn't see the stars from the summit due to the weather, but we did catch glimpses of the sunset peeking through the clouds, which was quite dramatic! Also, our guide, J IN, really wanted to show us the stars and took us to various spots to try and catch a view! The stories during our travels were enjoyable, and I had a great time! I definitely want to participate again!

I'm sorry for the late review. My child wanted to see the stars on the Big Island, so we booked this tour. Since I had previously climbed Haleakalā on Maui, I didn't worry too much about altitude sickness. The guide took photos for us and shared fun stories during the drive, making the time fly by. The moonlight made it a bit difficult to see the stars (though it was still much better than back home), so next time we visit, I'll check the lunar calendar and will definitely book this tour again.

普段見れない星空を見ることが出来最高のツアーでした

The day I participated was my 53rd birthday. The weather was perfect, and the starry sky exceeded my expectations. Tyra, the navigator from Masashi Nature School, was amazing and made it a wonderful birthday. Tyra was born in Okinawa and lived in Kanagawa until the second year of high school, so her Japanese is perfect. The borrowed winter clothing is warm enough and comfortable. Since restaurants close after 10 PM on the way back, let's prepare some late-night snacks at the hotel.

I chose this tour because it focuses on stargazing and photography at a relatively high altitude (I actually had discount coupons for other tours and was quite torn about my choice). In the end, it was extremely good! My family participated, and we were able to capture my son's best shots as well as some great photos of the volcano, which left us all thrilled.

While the weather is a matter of luck, I could feel the professionalism and teamwork of the company. Next time, I would like to use this service for a sunrise tour. Thank you very much!

I participated in a tour to observe the starry sky at Mauna Kea, hoping for a sky full of stars during the new moon. The weather was clear at the summit of Mauna Kea, and I was excited for what promised to be a wonderful night of stargazing. However, around sunset, clouds suddenly spread across the sky, and the sunset only peeked through the gaps in the clouds. Despite this, I was very lucky to see the rare phenomenon of sun pillars. After that, it started to rain, and the stars seemed to vanish. The guides, Shin and Big Jin, began searching for a stargazing spot. Since it was my first time on the Big Island, my husband and I decided to participate in the Mauna Kea sunset and stargazing tour! I was worried about altitude sickness since I had never climbed a high mountain before, but it was not a problem at all. The weather was fantastic that day, and both the sunset and stargazing from near the observatory were truly amazing, creating memories for a lifetime. If you're going to the Big Island, I highly recommend this tour.

初めてのハワイ島だったので、ぜひマウナケアのサンセットと星空観測に行きたいと思い夫婦二人で参加しました！
高い山には登ったことがないので、高山病を心配していたのですが、まったく問題ありませんでした。
当日はとても天気が良かったので、天文台付近から見たサンセットも星空観察も本当に素晴らしく、一生の思い出になりました。
ハワイ島に行くなら、このツアーをおすすめします。

Very few places could match this experience. The location; the slow climb up the giant sloping mountain. We went through rain, sun, even through a cloud; through the lava landscape, ranch lands and very bumpy rocky last stretch of road to reach the top! And wow it was a view from the top.
Be warned; it is very very cold; not what you expect from your Hawaiian break! You get nice warm coats from the tour group though (and later a little hot cocoa and brownie to keep you going!)
As the sun sets; you can see the mountains shadow on the other side; a glimpse of Maui and the glint of the sun off the telescopes preparing for their nights work. You can see the odd bit of movement as they open up. As soon as the suns down; its all go though. We have to leave the area quickly as the lights from the cars interfere with the telescopes (so no, there is no looking around inside them; if that is what you're hoping for in this trip!).
We move down slope a little to a good spot to see the huge expanse of clear, cloudless sky and the abundance of stars.
It is slightly interrupted with the brightness of the moon (so depending how long your stay is in Hawaii, plan for a darker night, unless you love the moon!); but not enough to stop us seeing nebula, planets and stars - its a really interesting spot to see both the northern and southern skies.
We did also spot a bit of the glow from the erupting volcano

The sunset at the summit was amazing!!
And for stargazing, I was able to see the moon, Mars, and Kilauea Volcano all at the same time!!
It was a full moon, so it was a shame I couldn't see the Milky Way... but I was able to see many constellations, so it's all good~

Cool Views from the Top of the World!

Our guide Jeff picked us up from the Pu'u Huluhulu Cinder Cone parking lot, at the base of the road up to the summit. We had a very nice pre-packaged dinner at the base camp, then rode up to the visitor center and onward to the observatories. A bumpy and steep ride, I was very happy to have an experienced driver at the wheel!
At the top the weather was cool and clear and good for viewing a sunset, then we went down to a slightly lower lot to view stars and planets through a good quality Celestron scope.... the clear air and high altitude really added detail! First time I have been able to make out the rings of Saturn, and four of Jupiter's moons were posing really well for us! Some really excellent deep space views too! Check out a cool image of the moon from the Celestron scope....

Highly recommended, especially if you live somewhere with so much haze and light pollution you don't get to see that stars that well!

The starry sky that changed the life of the tour guide truly lived up to its promise. The beautiful sunset, the star-filled sky, and the incredibly entertaining guide, Matsuchan, created wonderful memories.

The photos taken against the backdrop of the fantastical scenery of Kilauea Volcano's red glow reflecting on the clouds and the starry sky are treasures. Although the camera I brought was nothing special, they prepared a high-sensitivity camera there, so I was relieved to be able to take many photos.

I was also happy that the bento box served along the way tasted just like the ones I eat in Japan.

ツアーガイドの人生を変えたという星空、その言葉に偽りはありませんでした。きれいな夕日、満天の星空、面白すぎるガイドの松ちゃん。本当に良い思い出となりました。
キラウェア火山の赤が雲に映る幻想的な景色と星空を背景に撮影した写真は宝物です。持参したカメラは大したことないものでしたが、むこうで高感度カメラを準備してくれて、たくさん写真を撮ってもらえるので、安心です。
途中出ていた幕の内弁当も日本で食べる味と同じで嬉しかったです。

I participated with my middle school daughter. Both of us were a bit tired on the fifth day in Hawaii. The weather was nice, and we could see the sunset, the moon, and the stars clearly. I regretted that we couldn't see the Milky Way because the moon was so bright. We could also see the glow of the Kilauea volcano faintly. The scenery of the Big Island along the way was beautiful, and the various guide explanations were interesting. Matt's chatter was enjoyable too. I wondered if he was okay talking so much in such thin oxygen. I appreciated his effort to entertain us. The down jacket and pants we borrowed were incredibly warm. The miso soup we had in the cold was very delicious!

It was a wonderful tour.

The summit of Mauna Kea was above the clouds, and I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful sunset and stargazing, as well as photographing the night sky. I was also amazed to see the phenomenon of Kilauea's lava illuminating the sky in red from the summit.

The guide's explanations and guidance were of a high level, and they were very knowledgeable in various fields. The atmosphere, environment, and taste of the dining location were also impeccable.

Absolutely wonderful experience

The tour guide Herald was very nice, friendly and knowledgeble on native hawaiian's culture, ecology and astronomy. We got to see a "natural planetarium" in the mountain including Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Venus. Coming from a big city we don't see stars in the sky, so the view was just breath taking and we were soooo glad we participated in the tour. I guess you can go to the summit and see stars on your own but I'd strongly recommend this tour. Because I think it will give you a whole new experience and view on the island and their culture.
Dinner was tasty too. I was expecting a lot less.

This was our second time, but since it was my niece's first time on the Big Island, we participated. My sister, who is not good with heights, felt unwell, but our guides, Shin and Matsuzaki, were very kind and supportive. (She used oxygen a couple of times, but she said she really enjoyed it.) My niece, who was participating for the first time, was thrilled and felt it was great to join. Matsuzaki's storytelling was very enjoyable, and during the stargazing, we forgot about the cold and shortness of breath, laughing a lot while enjoying the stars. Next time, I would like to join another tour with a different Masashi Nature School.

高所が不得意な姉が気分を悪くしましたが、ガイドのシンさんや、松崎さんが優しく対応してくださり、（2回ほど酸素吸入しましたが）、姉もとても楽しめたと言っていました。初参加の姪は、大はしゃぎで参加してよかったと思っています。
松崎さんのおしゃべりはとても楽しく、星空観察の際は、寒さや息苦しさも忘れて大笑いをしながら星空を楽しめました。
次回は、また別のマサシネーチャースクールのツアーに参加したいと思います。
