History

As a residence of kings, a sanctuary, and a training ground for royalty, Kualoa was considered one of the most sacred places on the island. “Kualoa” translates to “long back” in Hawaiian, and stood for over 150 years. Originally purchased by Dr. Gerrit P. Judd (a respected missionary doctor and personal advisor to the king) for $1300, the ranch has grown through subsequent purchases by Dr. Judd’s son and the current owners, the Morgan family. Dr. Judd further expanded the estate by purchasing additional acreage in Hakipu’u and Ka’a’awa from the Wilder family, bringing the total size to the sprawling 4,000 acres it is today.

In 1927, the estate was officially named Kualoa Ranch, a name that signifies the abundance of stunning valleys and majestic mountain peaks within its boundaries. Throughout the years, Kualoa Ranch served various purposes, including being utilized as an auxiliary airstrip during World War II, with the impressive monkeypod trees serving as natural hangars for small planes. To this day, the Morgan family, descendants of Dr. Judd, are proud owners of Kualoa Ranch. This ranch is home to over 500 cattle. Situated in a serene and unspoiled part of Oahu, it remains a haven of natural beauty thanks to the support of visitors. It offers diverse terrain, ranging from dense rainforests to sprawling pasture grounds bordered by vibrant green cliffs overlooking the ocean. Beyond its scenic landscapes, Kualoa Ranch holds great historical and cultural significance. This area has been considered sacred since the 13th century and was reserved for royalty, including the famous Kamehameha lineage. You can explore an 800-year-old fish pond and a secluded beach that offer a glimpse into Hawaii’s rich heritage.
