Local expert tips
- Did you know? The all-wooden, double-hulled sailing canoes developed by ancient Polynesians to traverse the Pacific Ocean are called wa’a kaulua, or “double boat” in Hawaiian.
- Make sure to come ready to learn and ask questions! Hawaiian and Polynesian culture has deep, ancient roots, but is still alive and well today, mostly because of practitioners like the ones on the crew of the Kamoauli.
- Keep an eye out for sea life! Most days, you can spot a honu (sea turtle) or two, and occasionally even a dolphin.
- If you are travelling during the months of November to February, keep an eye out for migrating humpback whales! These majestic creatures played and continue to play an important role in indigenous cultures throughout the Pacific.
- Recommend attire: Wear something comfortable to move around in, and that you won’t mind getting wet with ocean spray.
- Recommend items to bring: Your curiosity and willingness to try new things!
About the Kamoauli
The Kamoauli is a handcrafted double-hulled sailing canoe that was made in Tonga, and sailed all the way to Hawai'i. Once in Hawai'i, the canoe was painstakingly inspected to meet US Coast Guard guidelines and is now the backdrop for one of the island's most unique activities. The members of the collective in charge of the Kamoauli are committed to maintaining and perpetuating Hawaiian culture, and make up a wide variety of backgrounds including graduates from the Maritime Academy, experienced sailors, educators, and much more.
They seek to share Hawaii's unique and rich culture and history with a traditional Polynesian voyage that offers a number of activities found nowhere else in the world.
How to get there?
The Kamoauli vessel is located at Kewalo Basin Harbor, about 10-15 minutes away from most Waikiki hotels, and approximately 50 minutes from Ko Olina. Paid parking is available at the harbor.Once in the harbor, you will continue straight towards the ocean/Kewalo Beach Park till you arrive at D Dock which will be located towards the northern end of Kewalo Harbor. Do not park at Kewalo Basin Beach Park, and paid parking ($1.00 per hour) is available on the left-hand side as you enter the harbor.
• Tour time: 5:00PM

Schedule
Check-in at Kewalo Basin Harbor

As you begin on your journey along the Waikiki coastline, your captain and knowledgeable crew will explain all of the history behind the double-hulled Kamoauli canoe. Handmade in Tonga, it traversed the Pacific Ocean so that you can experience the wonder of an authentic Polynesian voyaging canoe.

The cultural practitioners on-board the Kamoauli will share their love of the islands and its culture by teaching different aspects of Hawaiian life and history. Learn to pound taro into poi, listen to music played on the ukulele, watch a hula dance, and experience the unique wonder that is Hawaii.

Dine on delicious freshly made Hawaiian food that has been a staple of the islands for hundreds of years like freshly made ahi tuna poke, steamed purple sweet potatoes, smoked bonito, haupia coconut pudding, and of course, poi, the uniquely flavored and textured center piece of any Hawaiian meal.

As the sun makes it way towards the horizon, and the sky lights up in color, watch and listen as the cultural practitioners of the Kamoauli perform a ceremonial Hawaiian 'oli (chant) for the sunset. As the sounds of the chant fade into the wind, sit back and relax as you soak in the sunset views.
