Big Island
My daughter, who was previously too young due to age restrictions, was finally able to participate, and we joined the tour together. On the west coast of the Big Island, you can see a wonderful sunset from anywhere, so I thought we might not need to climb the mountain, but the sunset from the summit of Mauna Kea was indeed exceptional.
I was worried about car sickness since I heard there are unpaved parts on the road to the summit, but instead of car sickness, I ended up suffering from altitude sickness due to the lack of oxygen. However, our guide quickly provided oxygen from a tank, and we were able to enjoy the sunset and the starry sky without any issues. I was really glad to have joined a tour with a guide.
At the snow-covered summit of Mauna Kea, I was concerned about the cold, but the rental cold-weather gear from Masashi Nature School was as warm as the reviews said. For those who are sensitive to the cold, I recommend bringing something to cover your face, head, and ears, as well as heat-tech innerwear for warmth.
It was great to have explanations during the stargazing as well. Last time I visited, I did not join the summit tour and only did stargazing from the mountainside, but when it comes to viewing the stars, I saw about the same or even more this time (the stargazing after the summit tour had quite a bit of interference from headlights of cars coming down from the summit). So, if the focus is on stargazing, it might not be necessary to have the sunset from the summit, but experiencing a sunset at such a height, higher than Mount Fuji, is something you can't easily find elsewhere.
Our family really enjoyed this trip. The crew was informative, friendly and fun. The trip up the coast was beautiful and the music on the boat was quite nice.
I had been looking forward to going to the Big Island of Hawaii for so long, but the sunset from the summit of Mauna Kea was not special; it was just beautifully ordinary, really ordinary...
Maybe it's because the sunsets on the Big Island are beautiful no matter where you watch them from...
Perhaps I've experienced too many sunrises and sunsets during my travels, both abroad and domestically...
On the tour's website, it mentioned, "Using a reflecting telescope and a laser pointer, the guide will explain the constellations and stars," and I was really looking forward to seeing the stars and the moon through the reflecting telescope. However, there was no telescope set up at the location for viewing the constellations, and there was no explanation that there wouldn't be a reflecting telescope this time, which was quite disappointing.
In the car, I was seated in a three-person row with an unfamiliar elderly man and his adult daughter. The elderly man took up quite a bit of space, so I was in a half-sitting position the whole time... I didn't say anything to the elderly man about not moving in, so the driver wasn't at fault, but I thought it would be tough if someone with a larger build sat in the same row.

Dear Natsurin,
This is Tomoe from Nature School. Thank you very much for participating in our tour. I would also like to express my gratitude for sharing your experience.
On this day, due to the snowfall at the summit of Mauna Kea from the previous day, there were many tourists. After enjoying the sunset, there was an accident involving a rental car that overturned around 3,200 meters on the descent. As a result, the stargazing we had planned at this altitude was affected by the traffic jam caused by the accident, and we ended up stargazing at the Onizuka Center instead. However, due to the delay caused by the accident, we arrived at the Onizuka Center at 19:40. While the stars were clearly visible, there was a rush with customers wanting to take photos and return to the hotel quickly, and it seems we forgot to set up the telescope. We did not receive any reports from our guide regarding this. (Depending on the weather on the day, there may be times when we do not set up the telescope, but we usually explain this in advance.)
To prevent such occurrences in the future, we will share your valuable feedback within our company and work on improvements.
We will do our utmost to provide a better experience during your next visit, and all of our staff sincerely look forward to your participation.

I participated in this tour as a solo traveler. At first, I considered driving to Mauna Kea by rental car, but since it was my first time on the Big Island, I felt a bit anxious and decided to join the tour instead. The adjustments for altitude, the provision of warm drinks and meals, the rental of cold-weather gear (thick clothing and gloves), and the stargazing were all things I couldn't have done alone, so I truly made wonderful memories by participating. I recommend that those who are sensitive to the cold bring their own cold-weather gear. I tend to get hot, but the down jacket and long-sleeve T-shirt I brought just in case were very helpful. The summit of Mauna Kea is colder than I imagined (laughs)! Thank you, Tomo, for your assistance. Thank you very much.
Thanks to friendly knowledgeable guides my family will definitely do this again! We all had a great time! Bring sunscreen!
While we only saw one manta, she did come up close, which was an amazing experience.
This tour cannot proceed to the summit if the weather turns bad, and you won't be able to see the stars. In other words, you'll end up spending time that has no meaning. In that case, the refund is $15. While nature can be unpredictable, this tour is quite risky. Moreover, it seems that the weather often gets rough during the year-end and New Year period.
Also, when there is moonlight, the stars are not very visible. When I participated, it was just after sunset, around the first quarter moon, which created poor conditions for stargazing. If you expect a sky full of stars, it's best to check whether the moon is out just after sunset.
There are a total of seven companies offering the Mauna Kea summit tour, five of which are Japanese companies, and the remaining two are American companies, so most of the tourists at the summit are either Japanese or from English-speaking countries. Due to the thin air, you may feel quite dizzy, but since most of the journey to the summit is by car, even those who are not confident in their physical strength can participate. Note that the summit can drop below freezing. While there is a rental service for cold-weather gear, you will need to prepare your own as well. Hand warmers may not get very warm due to the thin air.
Children under 12 are not recommended to participate due to the potential risk of accidents caused by oxygen deprivation. However, locals were seen enjoying sledding and skiing with quite small children...
Our original trip was postponed due to snow on the summit of Mauna Kea but we rescheduled and had an unforgettable experience. Our guide Hank was great. As well as his astronomy expertise, he provided lots of information on Hawaiian culture. The views on the way up to the summit were spectacular. Great photographic opportunities of the sunset, views and night sky.
I would thoroughly recommend this trip.
It was more breathtaking than I had imagined! The bento was okay too! Next time, I definitely want to go see the sunrise. Nature is amazing!
This was a last minute booking so we were glad to get it. We did the 7:45-9:45 PM night tour. The set up is pretty standard. The crew was experienced and knew what to do when didn’t find rays at the first spot. We were towed gently to where we saw two! We had a couple of screamers which was a bit annoying but that apart, terrific trip
This was my second time on a dolphin swimming tour in Hawaii, but the experience on the Big Island far surpassed my previous one. Following the guide's instructions, a pod of about 50 dolphins came close to us repeatedly. The location of the dolphins changes daily, and on the day we participated, the guide had confirmed in advance that they were near the harbor. Therefore, we didn't have to search for them by boat.
We encountered the dolphins shortly after departing from the harbor, allowing us to swim with them for a long time, even after other boats had left. I could clearly hear the dolphins' calls underwater.
Both the guide and the boat captain were very proficient in Japanese, so there was no language barrier. They provided wetsuits, fins, and masks, making it enjoyable even for those who are not confident swimmers. Our third grader had a great time as well.
I highly recommend this experience if you visit the Big Island.
This trip was solely for the purpose of this tour, and I was moved to be able to see the sunset and the starry sky! Thank you, Matsuzaki, for driving so hard despite the challenges of working with nature; I had a great time! I think it was lucky that we were able to reach the summit. It might be better to apply with that understanding during this season. Even just the drive along the expansive mountainside and the starry sky are worth participating for!
For those who love the water and its fascinating creatures, we highly recommend this activity aboard the Hawaiian Sailing Canoe. The canoe is a modern replica seating a limited number of passengers, so the skipper Dave knew our names immediately. But much like going to a "modern" zoo, you may see what you're looking for the first time out but you may not. Our first night snorkel was at 8:30pm, and while the groups before and after us had a grand "show" we were skunked. But Dave said we could keep coming back (for free!) until we sighted the mantas. The next night at 9:30pm we were in luck, and were treated to a 45 minute water ballet by two mantas that glided and turned just inches beneath our illuminated surfboard. For optimum warmth bring your own full-length wetsuit instead of using their wetsuit tops.
It's unbelievable that, like other tour companies, they do not require life jackets at night on the sea. The return trip is completely in darkness. As someone with a boating license, I must say that if something were to happen, the staff alone would not be able to rescue all participants. I raise this alarm before any precious lives are lost. The boat's rocking is also severe, so pregnant women should refrain from participating. Since it's cold in December, warm drinks would have been better on board. I did see manta rays, and aside from that, I think it was good.
Thank you very much for participating in the tour. However, I sincerely apologize for not being able to provide a satisfactory service.
Upon confirming with the operating company, I learned that wearing life jackets for the manta tour in Hawaii is optional. However, as you pointed out, considering the safety of our customers, we have received word that they will consider requiring all participants to wear life jackets in the future.
I also sincerely apologize for serving cold drinks in the chilly weather. The operating company reported that due to an electrical issue, they were unable to provide warm beverages on short notice. They have now resolved the issue and are preparing warm drinks, and they have shared that they will work to ensure that similar situations do not occur in the future.
Thank you very much for your valuable feedback during this busy time.

It was disappointing that we couldn't reach the summit due to bad weather, but thanks to Tomo and Big Jin, it was a very enjoyable tour. I was deeply moved by their dedication in searching for a place where we could see the sunset and the starry sky. The warm outerwear they lent us was also a high-quality jacket.
To be honest, I wondered why Tomo was so determined to take photos of the night sky, but after seeing the wonderful pictures he captured, I understood that it was indeed worth the effort. Big Jin's explanations of the constellations were also excellent!
It became a very good memory. Thank you!
This tour was life changing for me! Such an awesome experience to really see the island and have someone guide you through it so you really understand what you're seeing and the history behind it.
Tour guide was Chris who was excellent. He has a real gift for this, and you can tell he is truly passionate and loves what he does. Makes the tour feel more real and less like show and tell or reading from a script. 10/10 highly recommended tour.
Tour provides you with all the comforts you need for the day so you're never hungry, cold, or unsure of where a clean bathroom is. Even had plugs for you to charge your phone although I had a portable charger with me that day which I recommend for any trip.
I participated in this tour on my first visit to the Big Island. They took us by car to a mountain over 4,000 meters high, where we enjoyed the sunset and stargazing. The guide was very hospitable and took a lot of photos for us.
Near the summit, there was even some snow, and I couldn't help but think, "Is this really Hawaii?!" It gets particularly cold at night. They provide rental cold-weather gear, gloves, and hats, but I was glad I brought my own hand warmer. I recommend bringing layers of clothing to ensure you're well-prepared for the cold.
When I arrived just before the reception time, there was already quite a long line. There are reserved seats, and since I ended up in the back, I recommend arriving earlier if you want to sit closer to the front. The buffet food was tastier than I expected. Guests are guided in order from the front. It was very impressive to see the sunset over the ocean from my seat before the show started. The show features modern hula, traditional hula, Polynesian dance, and fire dance. There is a scene in the middle of the show to celebrate birthdays and honeymoons, so it might be good to let them know in advance. I felt that the talk between the dances was a bit long, and there seemed to be less dance time. I can't compare it to other luau shows, though... All the dancers were very beautiful. The fire dance was the highlight and very powerful. Children up to 5 years old were free. Overall, I was quite satisfied.
Our guides made our 12 hours together seem too short and they went above and beyond to make our day the best ever. Both were extremely knowledgeable about virtually any Hawaiian subject. They picked us up precisely on time and we started our day. We were taken to a lava flow surrounded by mountains that went on as far as the eye could see. Just our first stop of seeing mother nature at its finest. We continued on to a park for a gourmet box lunch that was obviously freshly made and to get to know our tour mates better. The views and fresh air were wonderful. The Hawaiian gods of weather were certainly shining down on us. Off again for a tour around the quaint town of Hilo where we enjoyed the statue of King Kamehameha and a stop at a candy shop. We then went on to Rainbow Falls with its beautiful waterfall and scenery. We stopped along the way at steam vents from the volcano. Ladies, if you want a facial, that's the place to go. Volcano National Park was amazing. The Visitor Center had a great museum and showed us the history of the crater. This was just a preview as we would return later for a nighttime view. Leaving the crater we visited the naturally formed lava tube used in the filming of the rolling boulder scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The ferns at the park were also used as a backdrop for scenes from Jurassic Park. We were treated to dinner at the Kilauea Lodge in Volcano, Hawaii. Fabulous. After dinner we returned to the crater to view the night time glow and star gaze. We were able to get a glimpse of the lava pool where the level varies 100s of feet over a few days' time. Jim talked about the stars and pointed out several constellations. It was definitely a once in a lifetime view. Throughout the entire trip our hosts provided almost continuous commentary on the history, stories, customs, flora and fauna of Hawaii. A total 1st class experience and the highlight of our trip to Hawaii. We would definitely do this tour with them again. Mahalo!
One of the best tours in Hawaii. Our tour guide Adam was very knowledgeable and polite. We did the night viewing of the volcano tour with stargazing. During the entire trip our tour guide shared abundant histories about legends and culture from Hawaii. We stopped for lunch at a very beautiful place near Mauna Loa. Adam(tour guide) baked some delicious cookies for us too :) We covered Rainbow fall, Jagger Museum and the lava tube, out of which viewing the volcano at night was absolutely breath taking. The tour had included dinner at Kilauea Lodge(fine dining) by the volcano national park. Overall our experience with Kailani tours was amazing, we would definitely recommend this tour to all those who visit the Big Island.
Daisuke, our guide, was wonderful with his attentiveness.
The weather was drizzly and chilly, not typical for Hawaii, but we were able to see plenty of dolphins! We even got to see them jump, which was very satisfying.
I brought my iPhone in a waterproof case, but it didn't respond to swipes underwater. I was advised to start recording video on the boat, and when I tried that, it worked well.
While I was playing with the dolphins, I got a bit seasick (it's better to take motion sickness medication), but everyone was kind and helped me calm down.
According to Daisuke, "I am confident that we can get you closer to the dolphins than anyone else. If we couldn't see them, I believe other companies' boats wouldn't be able to either." His love for dolphins and constant attentiveness seem to help him know the best spots and share information with others.
If there’s a next time, I would definitely love to join again.
The location is easily accessible as it is on the main street of Kona. The parking lot is on the mountain side of the hotel. There are people lined up around the hotel’s rotary, so the entrance is easy to find. The show took place with the ocean in the background and a pleasant breeze, and it was really great! The sunset was beautiful too! There was a lot of laughter, and it was a very enjoyable time (even though I don't understand much English). The food was at the expected level, but I was happy to eat a lot of my favorite kalua pig. I have also been to the luau at the King Kamehameha Hotel (though it was quite a while ago, so my memory isn't clear), but I think the stage position and the host at Royal Kona were better.
The summit was so windy that I couldn't climb it, but they helped me find a spot to see the sunset through the rain clouds, and they didn't give up on showing me the stars either!
I'm really grateful to Macchan!
The journey was so much fun that I couldn't stop laughing!
I truly had a wonderfully satisfying day!
I want to try for a summit revenge next time, so I hope to have your support again then!
The waves were high, but we were able to see whales multiple times, which was amazing. The crew also provided explanations in English throughout the trip and frequently checked in on the drink service, allowing us to have a wonderful time.
At first, I hesitated to choose this tour because it was a bit expensive, but I made the right decision.
The sunset and the starry sky were incredibly beautiful, and I was able to take photos with my DSLR as well as the guide's camera.
They provided a lot of explanations about the stars, and I ended up falling in love with them.
It's a tour that makes you want to come back to the Big Island of Hawaii.
I participated with my wife. The reason we chose this activity, as mentioned in the reviews, is that the guides (Daisuke and Ryo) genuinely care for and love the dolphins.
After actually participating, I felt even more that they truly love dolphins from the bottom of their hearts. We encountered dolphins multiple times and were able to swim with them. It was moving to see them swimming comfortably in the natural sea, including family dolphins and baby dolphins. We could also hear their voices.
On our way back to the port, we encountered a manta ray, and although it wasn't included in the tour, we were given the opportunity to swim with it. Thank you so much!!
When we returned to the port, I strongly felt the desire to protect the natural dolphins. I definitely want to participate again next year!
The ride was too bumpy as there were many waves. We were able to spot only 1 manta ray. Too expensive for 45 min bumpy ride and the whole experience.
We appreciate you taking your time to review your manta snorkel and are sorry to hear you did not enjoy the tour. It is true, some nights are better than others; ocean conditions, weather and the amount of rays seen on any given night is out of our control. What we can control we aim to do our best with the conditions we are presented with.
Aloha
Sea Paradise
The sunset at the summit of Mauna Kea and the stargazing nearby were absolutely amazing. During the stargazing, the guide provided explanations about the stars, which were easy to understand. I was able to see stars that I can't see in Japan. Since the elevation is high, I was worried about altitude sickness, but it was good to have lunch at a lower elevation to acclimatize. Even so, I felt a bit uncomfortable after just a little movement. It gets cold at the summit, so make sure to prepare adequately with warm clothing like a sweatshirt.
Our 10am whale watching cruise was cancelled but we were accommodated on an other cruise for 10:30am. This one included snorkeling. So it was a big win for us. We did get to see a few whales and dolphins. The crew was amazing. They were friendly and informative. They took the time to chat with us. They gave us some background on the whales and clear instructions before getting in the water for snorkeling. They were very attentive and ready to help everyone during the snorkeling. This was an awesome tour. I would definitely book this tour again and recommend it.
The live music and Mai Tai were fantastic. Cute dolphins swam alongside the boat, and the big sun dove into the sea!
