North Shore
You can trek through a vast ranch on a retired thoroughbred that excelled in polo.
Holding the reins by yourself, you walk through the great outdoors with both uphill and downhill paths, and the view from the horse is truly wonderful! You can enjoy the scenery of Waimea Canyon.
The horses are well-trained and smart, so as long as you don't startle them, you can feel safe.
Although they are older horses retired from competition, their coats are shiny and beautiful.
You can ride for a full hour, so be sure to strengthen your inner thigh muscles! (laughs)
Thank you for participating.
It's surprising how high it is when you ride a horse, isn't it? I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it.
Please strengthen your muscles and join us again next time.
The weather wasn't very good, starting off with a cloudy sky and occasional light rain. The participants were just the two of us and a young couple from abroad, making four in total. Before we began, we were asked to read and sign a simple agreement written in Japanese. The staff helped us choose our horses, and each of us received a brief explanation on how to ride and handle the reins before being placed on the horses.
All the conversations were in English, so I could somewhat understand, but I missed the finer details and just relied on observation and body language. Suddenly, the staff led us in a line, and we started. We quickly began walking along the coastal path. After walking on the sandy ground for a while, we moved onto some grassy areas. The pace was slow, but there were moments where we suddenly accelerated on slight inclines, which was interesting.
While on the grass, my horse started eating the surrounding grass as we walked, and it was a bit challenging to get it to stop. I think it was mentioned in the initial instructions, but I wish I had read it more carefully. After walking for a while, we stopped on flat ground for a commemorative photo. The staff took many pictures with our smartphones.
We then returned the way we came, but the horse of the foreign couple's female rider seemed a bit excited and suddenly started running and rearing up, which made her a little scared. We changed the order of the horses and brought that horse behind the staff, but it still didn't work out. In the end, we called for a replacement horse, and while waiting, we took more commemorative photos on the beach. By that time, the sun was beginning to set, and I thought how beautiful the sunset by the sea would have been if the weather had been nice. We waited for nearly 20 minutes in the dark.
The replacement horse arrived safely, and we headed back. Due to the incident, our horseback riding session lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes. The couple seemed fine as they were conversing in English, but I worried a bit about what would have happened if it had been us, as we wouldn't have been able to communicate. However, the staff handled the situation calmly, so it might be a common occurrence. The only disappointment was the weather, but the horseback riding itself was very enjoyable, and I would love to try it again when the weather is nice.
草地では馬が歩きながら周りの草を食べてしまいそれをやめさせるように扱うのが少し難しかったです。最初の説明書に書いてあったような気がするのですがもっとちゃんと読んでおけばよかった^^;
You can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere since it's not crowded. Walking along the coast feels very nice. It's a homely atmosphere at the riding club.
Guide (Kevin) was very professional, informative and accommodating. This tour is a great way to explore the north shore area.
Had the best time there was a little to many people in the cage at one time but it was still the most amazing thing I ever got to experenice!I would defefenitly recommend this dive!
Aloha Rebecca! It's so great to hear you had an amazing experience! Many thanks for the recommendation, we hope to see you again for another Shark dive!
It was a very elegant time, walking slowly along the beach and through the fields for about an hour and a half. I was a bit worried since the explanations were only in English, but the horses were well-trained, so I was able to enjoy myself with peace of mind. Since I didn't have a rental car, I took the bus to Haleiwa and then used Uber from there. Fortunately, there happened to be an Uber nearby both on the way there and back, so I didn't have to wait long, but according to the driver, there usually aren't many Uber cars around this area. Those without a rental car might want to be cautious.
This horseback riding experience was a bit of a failure in terms of location. I thought it would be closer to Turtle Bay Resort, but it was quite far away (there are also horseback riding facilities within the resort). I rented a car to secure transportation to the site. This time, it was a disappointment.
My first zip line experience was exciting at first, but I gradually got used to it and enjoyed it. It's a shame there wasn't a Japanese guide, and it would have been even better if there were higher settings available.
Staff was great. Sharks came close but not too close which was awesome.
Three of us participated! ♫ There were about 12 other people from overseas joining as well. We took motion sickness medication beforehand, but the boat was rocking quite a bit while we were stopped at the point where the sharks were. Some people ended up vomiting before they even saw the sharks, so I strongly recommend taking motion sickness medication just in case, even if you don't usually get seasick.
Once we dove in from the enclosure, we encountered a lot of sharks! ♫ It's not often you get to see them up close, so it really gets your adrenaline pumping! The sharks' faces were clearly visible and they looked quite cute. (laughs)
Our turn was last, but we were in the same group as a dandy gentleman from the Middle East who had been vomiting since the beginning. Even while he was in the enclosure with the sharks, he couldn't stop vomiting, but everyone was laughing and having a good time about it. (laughs) Thanks to him, the sharks might have gathered around! (laughs)
The waves were strong even inside the enclosure, and I was clinging to the bars the whole time, but it’s definitely an activity worth trying! Just like with any activity, even Japanese people who can't speak English can become very friendly with participants from other countries. ♫ I would love to participate again when I go to Hawaii!
We participated as a family of three at the request of my son, who is now a high school student. As rumored, there were no other Japanese participants besides us, but that was not a problem. However, the shuttle van took a long time to arrive, and once we got on, it was packed with no space at all for a long drive. I got motion sickness, and that alone made me tired. The zip line itself was very good. It felt great to cut through the wind while enjoying the beautiful scenery. It was a bit expensive at 70,000 yen for the three of us, but my son was very pleased as he took a lot of photos for Instagram, so I suppose it was worth it. Mahalo.
mahalo
I confirmed my reservation with a phone call the day before, but I was asked when I made the reservation since it wasn't found (I had booked it in October of the previous year). Eventually, they found my name.
On the day of the event, I checked the color of the bus and the location. A green bus with zipline photos came to pick us up. We picked up three groups from other hotels and left fully booked. After leaving the last pickup hotel, we had just over an hour's drive, during which the members on board started introducing themselves.
After that, the driver shared information about local landmarks, Hawaiian history, the Hawaiian language, immigration history, and education, and before we knew it, we had arrived. After arriving, we used the restroom (there are no toilets along the course), stored our valuables and luggage, entered our consent forms on the computer (available in Japanese), put on helmets and gear, and started. (Only camera types that hang around the neck were allowed.)
After everyone cleared the practice course, we boarded the buggies to proceed to the main course. There were various instructions like extending arms, tightening arms, and bending legs, but I was quite scared (laughs). When I was saying, "I'm so nervous, wait a minute," the fun veteran guide joked, "I'm nervous too, it's my first day as a guide!"
Our group consisted of four family members (a couple and two elementary school children), three young girls from Australia, two parents from America, and two couples of unknown nationality, with three guides assisting us. Generally, one person helped with the gear, while two welcomed us at the finish line (there are two lanes for one course).
The course included not only sliding like Tarzan but also a section where firefighters climbed using only their arms, a bungee-like jump section, and towards the end, a backward challenge course and an upside-down challenge course (for those who wanted to try). There were also points for hydration, snacks with bananas, and snacks with tomatoes.
We completed all the courses in a friendly atmosphere and finished the two-hour course. They also sent us many photos for free via email. We were taken back by bus, creating wonderful memories.
As a side note, I was unsure about the timing for tips. When I asked an American participant, they said they gave $10 each to the guide right after finishing and thought it wasn't necessary for the driver. I hurriedly searched for the guide to give the tip, but they had gone to lunch, so I asked another staff member for help, which relieved me. However, since the children were also taken care of and we had fun, I wished I could have thanked the guide directly. During the round trip on the bus, I regretted not giving a little something to the driver who provided such a fun experience.
I think it would have been even more enjoyable if I understood English better, but they were very considerate towards my husband and two elementary school children, who hardly speak any English, so it was all good!
There are similar attractions in Japan that I have participated in, but compared to those, they helped with gear and ensured safety very well. They also communicated closely with each other using walkie-talkies to proceed smoothly. The course was well-paved, and since we were sliding from a high place, we didn't get dirty.
Although there are some detours, considering just the horseback riding, the price feels a bit high. However, the location is good, and I think it was nice to enjoy a bit of Haleiwa as well.
Thank you for participating. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the beach course that is characteristic of Hawaii.
From Waikiki, it takes about an hour by bus to the port on the west side. The port only has restrooms without doors, and the boat is a 15-person capacity without a restroom, so it's best to change and, if possible, use the restroom beforehand. Towels are not provided, so you need to bring your own. I went on April 12, and it was quite cold. The water temperature was probably around 20-22 degrees Celsius.
Rash guards are available for free rental, but there are only three, and some are short-sleeved, so considering the low water temperature, I think it's better for women and those who get cold easily to bring their own. The water surface can be quite choppy, so it's easy to get seasick while snorkeling and watching the sharks.
The sharks are in deeper water, and since the camera focuses mainly on the lower section of the cage, I recommend that those who are confident in diving grab onto the lower section or the bottom of the cage to quietly observe (as long as you can hold your breath). This way, you’re less likely to get seasick.
The sharks are very calm and beautiful. The water is clear, so to avoid ruining your experience with seasickness, please make sure to take motion sickness medication. I don’t usually get seasick, but I took some just in case, and I didn’t experience any seasickness.
The optional video and photos are $75 per group.
It was good but wasn’t much to do other then go from Hut to Hut and a lot of them were full and did not get to see.
I might have needed to mention this beforehand, but if I was expecting a title like "Enjoy the Ranch with a Course That Suits You," there was no level check or inquiry about my preferences; it was just a slow, straightforward walk.
We apologize if you were frustrated by not being able to trot or canter on this ride. We have an advanced ride option, however, the ride booked was a 1.5 hr scenic ride. Our advance ride allows trotting and cantering, however, we keep that group small (4 people). Also, each rider must show that they can safely trot and canter because horses love to go faster and it would be dangerous for someone who doesn't know how to control the horse. We hope if you are advance that you will sign up for that ride. Mahalo
My son and I just did the 90 minute scenic tour. It was his first time and it was absolutely fantastic! The whole trail was very smooth and the view was breathtaking like no other. Our wranglers were very knowledgeable about the trail and very attentive. My son who is 8 absolutely enjoyed the ride and had no problem riding this trail. Definitely a ‘must activity’ at Gunstock Ranch!
Mahalo for the wonderful review, and pictures! We appreciate you taking taking the time to share your experience.
There are individual differences, so I can't say for sure, but even someone like me who is not good with heights enjoyed it. The conversations are all in English, but the staff are all kind and teach you with gestures, making it a refreshing activity that leaves you smiling.
The horseback riding time was quite long, and I enjoyed walking along the coast. I felt that the Dole Plantation wasn't really necessary.
Thank you for participating. At the Dole Plantation, we provide guidance while also allowing for breaks, and we appreciate your feedback.
I had the image of a staff member leading each horse for a walk, but instead, it was really nice to see them trotting along freely.
Thank you for participating. I'm glad you enjoyed it. The views from the horseback riding course are truly soothing. Please consider using our services again next time.
I arrived a little late to the meeting place, but it was a lot of fun. The main purpose was horseback riding, but I was also able to stroll around the town of Haleiwa (the garlic chicken was delicious). Although I didn't see any turtles due to the season, I was excited to see a seal during the horseback riding. The horses are cute and gentle, making it a great option for beginners.
Thank you for participating. It seems that the pickup was delayed, and I apologize for that. I'm glad to hear that you were satisfied with the tour. We look forward to serving you again.
This was on my bucket list, and definitely worth the wait!!! If I ever get back to North Shore, I will definitely be doing this again!! The crew was awesome!! So friendly, and willing to help whether someone needed help or had a question. Mahalo!
We are delighted you enjoyed your tour! Thank you very much for your awesome review! We look forward to seeing you on your next visit!
This is the tour for people who like to be on there own once they get there. This is broken into two parts morning activity and afternoon activity. You have a fully narrated ride over to the North Shore telling you virtually everything about the island. Also all landmarks are pointed out. You arrive get snacks if needed. You are then dropped off at your first activity. The falls etc. Pk up time is set you meet back at bus and your off to bike, kayak, shop or lunch or whatever. Your pk up time is set for your hassle free ride back to waikiki. All fully narrated back. Worth every penny. AC was our guide and knew everything about the island. Was the highlight of our trip.
There were more sharks than I expected, haha. However, it was a bit disappointing that the seawater was slightly murky due to heavy rain the day before. That said, it was an issue unrelated to the tour, and since it was my first experience with the tour, it turned out to be a great experience!
It takes about two hours to get to Gunstock Ranch by taking The Bus number 55 from Ala Moana. After passing by Kualoa Ranch, you will find Gunstock Ranch further ahead. There is only a sign along the road, so I almost missed the bus stop at Kamehameha Hwy + Opp 56-155. After getting off the bus and walking down the road marked by the sign, I arrived at Gunstock Ranch, where I could hear cheerful voices from a children's swimming class.
I arrived quite a bit earlier than the check-in time, so I spent some time playing with the horses and goats. After listening to the safety instructions, I decided not to wear a helmet and signed a separate waiver form. About 30 minutes into the horseback riding, we reached a hill where we could see the surrounding scenery, and Grace and Chad, who guided us, took some photos for us. The staff were very friendly and helped my mother, who doesn't understand English at all and is inexperienced with horseback riding, feel comfortable. I had a fulfilling two hours riding along a path covered with jungle-like trees on a very friendly horse, an experience I don't usually get to enjoy. I definitely want to visit again.
Mahalo for your detailed description. It helps our future guests so much. We hope that you will come again soon. Mahalo
It was my first time riding a horse, but the horse was very calm, and even beginners could enjoy it. The riding course along the coast had beautiful scenery, and I was very satisfied.
The only disappointing part was the guide. Although he was a Japanese person who had lived in Hawaii for a long time, he forgot our group during the hotel pickup that morning and left without us. We had to call the hotel we were staying at, and finally, he came back to pick us up. However, his apology felt insincere, and he seemed to have no bad intentions, which made us feel bad for the other tour guests who were with us. That was the only disappointing part.
Thank you for your participation.
I sincerely apologize for the mistake during your pickup. It seems there were also shortcomings in the response from our staff, and I apologize for that as well.
We will take great care to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future.
What an incredible experience! We got to see % sharks and they continued to swarm the cage the whole time! The crew were great! Super nice, very knowledgeable and informative. Made sure we had a great experience, My 8 & 11 year old sons loved it! Perfect for the kids! It was one of the highlights of our trip!
I drove from Honolulu.
The entrance is easy to find because there are signs.
You can take a leisurely horseback ride along the beach, and the photos turned out great with the ocean as the backdrop.
This is my third time horseback riding in Hawaii, but if you want to ride by the beach, this is the best place to go!
I apologize for sharing my experience a year later. I will make a reservation next month!
Did the same dive with One Ocean last year and was so impressed I had to do this again. This time, the sharks were even more curious as to our presence and came up quite close to us at 4-5 feet distance on some pass bys. Got some incredible 4K video on the footage. Sophie and Kevin were very enthusiastic about their work and Sophie’s passion for researching sharks really shows, giving everyone information about what we saw in he water with specific characteristics and personalities of certain sharks that they frequently see. Thanks again to Sophie and Kevin and see you guys for the 3rd time hopefully soon!
Finally... I was taken to a souvenir shop for black coral???
The worst!!
Everyone who participated came out empty-handed.
What was that???
You must be getting a rebate from the souvenir shop, right??
Is it the company??? Or the individual who took us there!!
As a business owner, I understand everything. (This is my advice)
I always use your company.
Next time, if there are no issues like this, I will use you again!!
Thank you very much for participating in the tour.
However, we sincerely apologize for not being able to provide a satisfactory service.
Upon confirming with the local operating company, we received a report that we made a stop for a restroom break at a location called Tropical Farms, which sells macadamia nuts and is situated between Turtle Bay Resort and the hotel. We appreciate your understanding that this was used as a restroom break.
Thank you for your valuable feedback during your busy schedule.
