The volcanic landscape of the Kailua-Kona area has created a striking coastline where instead of sandy beaches, the ocean meets lava rock, creating over time structures such as sea caves and underwater lava tubes, only approachable by small boats or kayaks. On the west coast, kayak in Keauhou Bay, visit the famous Captain Cook Monument, or paddle a traditional outrigger canoe. In the verdant east side, you can swim and kayak at one of the many waterfalls in the Hilo area.
