An important note, because it took us about 90 minutes to get from Waikiki to Waianae and almost two hours to get back due to traffic.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-143\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaiiactivitiesdotcom.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/06\/img_4520.jpg?resize=840%2C560\" alt=\"IMG_4520\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Dolphin Star itself was fairly comfortable due to its size, and had an interior dining room as well as its top viewing deck. Waianae was dry as usual, but the weather wasn\u2019t too hot and the sea breeze kept us comfortably cool. After a short welcome and introduction from the captain and crew, we set off from the harbor and began our search for dolphins.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-135\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaiiactivitiesdotcom.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/06\/img_4478.jpg?resize=840%2C560\" alt=\"IMG_4478\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We quickly spotted a small pod of bottlenose dolphins, which according to the crew hadn\u2019t happened in months. We were told that bottlenoses are typically shyer than spinner dolphins and didn\u2019t often come towards boats, but this pod came real close, giving us a good look and allowing Mikiko and Eriko to take some great pictures.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_125\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125\" style=\"width: 3024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-125\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaiiactivitiesdotcom.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/06\/dolphins1.jpg?resize=840%2C1120\" alt=\"dolphins1\" width=\"840\" height=\"1120\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-125\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo credit: Mikiko<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-139\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaiiactivitiesdotcom.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/06\/img_4504.jpg?resize=840%2C560\" alt=\"IMG_4504\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The pod stayed near us for a while before disappearing (important dolphin business, no doubt), but soon after that we spotted a pair of honu.<\/p>\n<p>Green sea turtles aren\u2019t nearly as curious as dolphins, but we were able to snap a few pictures from afar before they dove out of sight.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-147\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaiiactivitiesdotcom.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/06\/img_4553.jpg?resize=840%2C560\" alt=\"IMG_4553\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" \/><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_148\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-148\" style=\"width: 6000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-148\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaiiactivitiesdotcom.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/06\/img_4556.jpg?resize=840%2C560\" alt=\"IMG_4556\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-148\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A honu, or green sea turtle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We then headed further up the coast in search of more dolphins.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-151\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaiiactivitiesdotcom.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/06\/img_4568.jpg?resize=840%2C1260\" alt=\"IMG_4568\" width=\"840\" height=\"1260\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-153\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaiiactivitiesdotcom.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/06\/img_4588.jpg?resize=840%2C560\" alt=\"IMG_4588\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The captain explained that spinner dolphins were a common sight for them, as they often rested in shallow waters. As a nocturnal species, spinner dolphins sleep with one half of their brain awake and swimming, so they stay near the surface during the day.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-154\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaiiactivitiesdotcom.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/06\/img_4613.jpg?resize=840%2C560\" alt=\"IMG_4613\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Soon enough, we spotted them.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-155\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaiiactivitiesdotcom.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/06\/img_4654.jpg?resize=840%2C560\" alt=\"IMG_4654\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were a lot of spinners. We spotted at least two pods. Most of them didn\u2019t come as close to the boat as the bottlenoses did, but we still got some great pictures.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-164\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaiiactivitiesdotcom.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/06\/img_4733.jpg?resize=840%2C560\" alt=\"IMG_4733\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-166\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaiiactivitiesdotcom.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/06\/img_4748.jpg?resize=840%2C560\" alt=\"IMG_4748\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a while, we were informed that lunch was being served. We were pretty surprised with how awesome lunch was. We had freshly-grilled burgers on taro buns, with fresh lettuce, tomato, avocado, and pineapple, served with a side of taro chips. The entire experience was fun, and we got to see many more marine animals than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Mikiko, Eriko, and I went in the morning, which was just a dolphin watch tour, but Emily and Marisa got to attend the afternoon tour which included a snorkel as well.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re on Oahu staying on Ko Olina, you should definitely go on a dolphin watch from Waianae Harbor, and <a href=\"\/en\/hawaii\/oahu\/a\/8879?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=west_oahu_dolphin_121&amp;utm_campaign=dolphin_star&amp;utm_content=post&amp;sid=1486&amp;cid=blogWestOahuDolphinWatchingTour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Dolphin Star<\/a> is as good as it gets.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you\u2019re staying in Waikiki, the long bus ride is a great way for you to see the southern coast, as you drive past a lot of major Oahu landmarks such as Ala Moana, Kakaako, Downtown Honolulu, the airport, Aloha Stadium, Pearl Harbor and Pearlridge Center, Wet\u2019n\u2019Wild, and Ko Olina.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re don&#8217;t feel like driving out, there are popular snorkeling destinations in Waikiki, such as <a href=\"\/en\/hawaii\/oahu\/a\/15662?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=west_oahu_dolphin_121&amp;utm_campaign=turtle_canyon&amp;utm_content=post&amp;sid=1486&amp;cid=blogWestOahuDolphinWatchingTour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Turtle Canyon<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"whale_watching_cruises_tours\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=west_oahu_dolphin_121&amp;utm_campaign=whale_watching&amp;utm_content=post\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">whale watching cruises<\/a> in the winter months (December to April).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Got questions about dolphin watching?
