How does it work?

You’ll board the boat from a dock in sparkling Honokohau Harbor, located in Kailua-Kona, and then set sail along the stunning Kona coast. The captain and crew will choose the snorkeling spot for the day based on weather, ocean conditions, time of year, and their intimate knowledge of the Big Island’s western coast. Once you reach your destination for the day, the crew will provide all snorkel equipment and introduce you to the underwater world! When you’re all done exploring, hop back aboard for some snacks and beverages and head back to the harbor for drop-off.

Local expert tips

• Honokohau Harbor is a busy port, where the water is amazingly clear and shallow, so you’ll get a taste of local marine life before you even set sail. Honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles) and other local fish love to visit the harbor to feast on the scraps tossed by fishers as they clean their catches.
• If you are taking the morning tour, try to arrive extra early for a chance to see the Hawaiian spinner dolphins! They have been out hunting all night and come back to the shallows to sleep, so early morning is when you’re most likely to see them.
• Honokohau Harbor has plenty of free parking! However, it is a busy place so it is still a good idea to arrive early to ensure you’ll get a spot if you plan on driving there.
• Honokohau Beach is located adjacent to the harbor and is also a great destination! Whether you like swimming, water sports, eating, shopping, hiking, or just relaxing, there’s plenty for everyone in and around Honokohau Bay.
• Best time of the year/best time of the day: The waters of the Kona coast are inviting all year round, but they are at their warmest and most calm in the summer. However, winter (December to March) is humpback whale migration season, so you have a greater chance to see some of these majestic creatures on their way north or south.
• Recommend attire: Please wear your bathing suit! In addition, it can get a little chilly out on the water especially in the early morning, so if you are taking the morning tour, it is a good idea to bring a light sweater or cover-up.
• Recommend items to bring: Please bring your own towel, as well as a change of clothes if you’d like to change after your snorkel. If you plan on taking pictures (and we hope that you do!) a waterproof case or strap is a good idea.



Boat information

The Wicked Wahine is a 29-ft smooth-riding powerboat with comfortably padded seating for up to 14 guests. She also has a ladder for easy entry and exit into the ocean for snorkeling.



How to get there?

Check-in location: Honokohau Harbor is conveniently located just north of popular Kailua-Kona and just south of Kona International Airport (KOA). It is accessible from HI-19, or Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway. The closest public transit is bus #202, which stops about a 20-minute walk from the harbor. Rideshare or taxi services are also a great option for those coming from Kailua-Kona or other towns nearby.

Parking Information: Plenty of free parking is available on both sides (north and south) of Honokohau Harbor.

Driving distance from main resort areas: Honokohau Harbor is only about 10 minutes from the heart of Kailua-Kona by car, and about 40 from Waikoloa, depending on traffic conditions. If you are coming from resorts on the other side of the island, such as Hilo (Volcano) or Puna, plan on about 2 hours to drive across Saddle Road.
