About Poipu Beach

What is Poipu Beach?
Poipu Beach Park is on the sunny South Shore of Kauai, about 15 minutes from Lihue Airport. The beach is two crescent bays separated by a sandy point (called a tombolo) that emerges at low tide. The eastern side has a protected keiki (children's) pool ideal for young swimmers, while the western side has gentle waves popular for boogie boarding and beginner snorkeling.
Why it's popular
Poipu is consistently ranked among the best family beaches in Hawaii thanks to calm protected swimming, lifeguards on duty, full facilities including showers and restrooms, easy parking, and reliable sunny weather. Hawaiian monk seals frequently rest on the beach (they are roped off when present). Sea turtles are common in the snorkel zone. The South Shore averages over 300 sunny days per year.
Where it sits on Kauai
Poipu Beach is in the Poipu resort area on Kauai's South Shore, about 12 miles south of Lihue. Nearby attractions include Spouting Horn blowhole, Old Koloa Town (plantation-era shops and restaurants), and the National Tropical Botanical Garden. The area is anchored by several resort hotels and condos. Most South Shore visitors stay within walking or short driving distance of the beach park.

What to Do at Poipu

Swimming and snorkeling
The east keiki pool is calm enough for toddlers and beginning swimmers. The west side is good for moderate snorkeling along the rocky points; expect green sea turtles, butterflyfish, parrotfish, and tangs. Visibility is best on calm summer mornings. Lifeguards are on duty daily. Watch for posted high surf or jellyfish warnings, especially during winter swells.
Surfing and boogie boarding
Poipu's west side has a beginner-friendly surf break called Brennecke's, just east of the main beach. Boogie boarding works year round when surf is moderate. Surf lessons run from local schools at $90 to $130 per person for a 2 hour group lesson. Winter brings larger swells; summer is gentler. Beginners should always go with an instructor or experienced friend.
Wildlife viewing
Hawaiian monk seals (an endangered species) regularly rest on the sand at Poipu. Volunteers from the Hawaii Marine Animal Response group rope off resting seals; stay at least 50 feet back. Green sea turtles often come ashore at the eastern end. From November to March, humpback whales pass close offshore and can be spotted from the beach. Spinner dolphins are occasional visitors.

Visiting Tips

Best time to visit
Mornings (8 to 11 AM) offer the calmest water, best snorkel visibility, easiest parking, and most monk seal sightings. Afternoons get crowded and the trade winds pick up. Summer (April to October) has the calmest swimming conditions. Winter brings larger surf on the west side, ideal for watching but not for inexperienced swimmers. The South Shore stays sunny year round.
Parking and facilities
Free public parking is available next to the beach park, but it fills by 10 AM in peak season. Overflow parking is along Hoona Road. Facilities include restrooms, outdoor showers, picnic tables, a grassy lawn area, and a beach pavilion. Lifeguards are on duty daily. Food trucks and snack shops sit a short walk away. There are no rentals at the beach park itself.
What to bring
Pack reef-safe sunscreen, snorkel gear (or rent in Poipu town), water, towels, and a sun shelter or umbrella for shade beyond the trees. Closed toe water shoes help in rocky areas. Do not approach or photograph monk seals up close; use zoom lenses from behind the rope barriers. Removing sand or rocks is illegal. The beach is wheelchair accessible from the parking lot.
