This tour takes you to see the Big Island's wild nature and unique history. First you will stop at Coffee Farm to join a coffee tour that includes a sampling of 100% Kona Coffee. Then you'll see two very important historical locations: the Painted Church and the Place of Refuge. Officially the St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church, the Painted Church is located in South Kona and is home to a beautiful fresco painting that tells of various Biblical stories. After learning of the missionary history of Hawaii, visit Pu'uhonua O Honaunau national historical park to learn about ancient Hawaiian traditions. Place of Refuge was a temple where ancient Hawaiian law breakers, civilians and defeated warriors may find sanctuary and absolution. Last but not least, head to one of the most famous spots for snorkeling on the Big Island, Kealakekua Bay! Here, you'll see spectacular coral reefs, tropical fish and sea turtles by the Captain Cook Monument where the famous Captain James Cook lost his life.
FUN FACT:
Coffee had not existed in Hawaii until Don Francisco de Paula Marin, who was King Kamehameha the First's Spanish advisor, brought the coffee plant to the islands in 1813.

The soil around the Captain Cook Monument is British soil. Captain James Cook was a British explorer and cartographer who established first contact between Hawaiians and the West. He landed in 1778 and was killed in Kealakekua Bay in 1779. The white obelisk that marks the location of Captain Cook's death was built in 1874 by the order of Princess Likelike and later deeded to the United Kingdom.
