  • Water shoes or water friendly closed toe shoes are required and also available to rent.

Kohala Ditch History

Kohala Ditch was built between 1905 and 1906, and more than 600 Japanese laborers spent 18 months drilling through and blasting out solid rocks within the canyons of Kohala. These laborers built concrete and wood flumes under treacherous conditions, and the fact that the flumes are still in working condition to this day is a testament to their handwork and skill.

The flumes stretch approximately 22.5 miles in length and brought water and wealth to people living in Kohala. The ditch was able to transport millions of gallons of water, and was one of the major reasons behind the success of the Big Island's sugar industry.

Although damaged by earthquakes in 2006, a comprehensive restoration of the flumes has brought back these historic waterways, and offer guests to the area a unique look into Hawaii's beautiful natural wonderland.

Should I wear a swimsuit?
  • No, casual recreation clothing is fine. However, you will get splashed or doused while you are kayaking and your clothes will get wet. Wear clothes that you do not mind getting wet. Better to bring a towel and a change of dry clothing.
I can not swim... Should I be concerned?
  • Not at all. The water is only knee deep, so if you fall into the ditch, don't be panic and simply stand-up.
Should I take valuables, like my key with me during the tour?
  • Taking with you is probably not a great idea, unless you have them well secured in somewhere that will not fall away into the water. You can ask the receptionist to hold your items at the tour office while you are out on the tour.
Can I bring my camera?
  • Cameras are welcome on the tour! However you are responsible for its transport and condition.
