Closed to most rental cars, Saddle Road features a range of terrain including historic-era lava flows pocketed with ancient forests, which are home to numerous native birds.

This special area, "the saddle" is is especially attracting to hikers, bird watchers and photographers for it's diverse terrain and unique forests. A knowledgeable Hawaiian Walkways' guide will share their knowledge and insight of the area. The tour can range from easy walks to moderately strenuous hikes.

*Naturalist Guide Services at the ratio of one guide per ten hikers.
*The footing on hardened lava is rocky and uneven. Closed shoes are a must.
*Because of the mountain climate in the region, hikers need to be prepared for cool, perhaps misty weather (with a light jacket/sweatshirt).
*It will be up to you how far you are willing to go on this hike.
