Humpback Whale Family

Each year humpback whales make their migration from Alaska to Hawaii, adding to Hawaii's already abundant marine life. On this cruise, you will learn fascinating facts enhanced by spectacular visual aids, and enjoy engaging conversation with their experienced and knowledgeable naturalist.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to listen to the unique underwater song of these majestic mammals with a special hydrophone system on board. During the three-hour expedition, you will learn about the history and development of the humpback whales and about Hawaii's ancient connection to these gentle underwater giants through the kumulipo (creation chants).

Fair Wind's Marine Naturalist: Whale expert Jonathan Opey accompanies each cruise, sharing his more than 20-year whale experience. First inspired by Jacques Cousteau to learn about the ocean and its mammalian inhabitants, Opey studied cetacean biology in college. He then traveled the world, studying whales while working with Greenpeace and supporting the Sea Shepherd Foundation. He has also received instruction by certified Hawaiian historians to share Hawaii's history along the Kona coast, including the relationship between Hawaiians and the humpback whales. Opey recently organized his own grass-roots environmental research group, Hawaii Marine Research Center, to share his knowledge and experience directly with Hawaii's children.
